Who AI assistants recommend for AC installation and replacement

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for AC installation and replacement recommendations 252 times. Here is what they needed to see on an HVAC company's page before naming it to put in a new air conditioner.

The short answer

Before naming a company to install or replace an AC, assistants wanted a written quote that names the equipment and its efficiency rating. They also looked for a load calculation, the labor warranty, the permit, ductwork and which related work is included.

What people actually asked

We asked for AC installation and replacement in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 252 answers it produced between September 9 and October 14, 2026:

  • “AC installation and replacement near me — I'm in Seminole, FL 33772. Who do you recommend?”88 answers
  • “Who should I call for AC installation and replacement in Clearwater, FL?”84 answers
  • “I'm looking to get AC installation and replacement done in Dunedin, FL in the next few weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”80 answers, asked with five different timings: before the end of the month, next month, sometime this month, in two weeks and in the next few weeks

Together, the 252 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, Palm Harbor, St. Petersburg and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 30 to 32 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 104, Claude 76 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “air conditioner installation”, “new AC installation”, “AC replacement” or “central air installation”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“What is included when you replace an air-conditioning system?” Replacing equipment and changing the surrounding installation are different scopes; the quotation should identify both.

What your AC installation and replacement page has to explain

A replacement is not one price for one box. Answers kept telling customers to compare quotes line by line: the brand and model, the efficiency rating, the size, the warranty and the permit. Two quotes for the same house can cover very different work. A page that shows what a real quote lists lets a customer compare before calling.

Assistants also separated swapping the unit from changing the installation around it. They told customers to ask whether ductwork changes, a new thermostat, drain line work and removal of the old unit are included. Many said older homes may need duct repair, and told customers to have the ducts inspected. The page should say which of these come standard and which are quoted separately.

Many answers warned against matching the old unit's size without checking. They told customers to ask for a load calculation, often called Manual J, so the system fits the house. Some HVAC pages focused on repair and said little about full replacements. A real installation example, with the equipment and the work the owner approved, shows the company does this job.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 252 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for AC installation and replacement, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Does the quote name the equipment and its efficiency?

Most answers told customers to get the brand, model and efficiency rating in writing from every company. Without those, customers could not tell whether two prices were for the same system.

61% of the answers (153 of 252) brought this up.

Ask whether each includes permits, the equipment brand and model, and the labor warranty.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for AC installation and replacement in 33770?”, October 13, 2026

What does the installer's labor warranty cover?

Assistants told customers to ask about the labor warranty separately from the manufacturer's equipment warranty. Some said labor coverage varies widely between installers, and told customers to ask who handles warranty claims.

50% of the answers (127 of 252) brought this up.

Ask for the labor warranty as well as the equipment warranty.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get AC installation and replacement done in 33755 sometime this month. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 1, 2026

Is the new system sized to the house?

Many answers told customers to ask for a load calculation, often called Manual J, before accepting a size. They warned against simply matching the old unit, since the house may have changed since it was installed.

42% of the answers (106 of 252) brought this up.

Ask for a proper load calculation to size the system, not just a swap of the old unit's size.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for AC installation and replacement in 33781?”, October 13, 2026

Are duct repairs or changes included?

Answers often told customers to ask whether the quote covers duct repairs or changes, and to have the ducts inspected. Some said leaky or old ducts can undercut a new system, so the duct scope changes the real price.

42% of the answers (105 of 252) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote includes the permit, the thermostat, the condensate line, and any ductwork repairs.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get AC installation and replacement done in Seminole, FL next month. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 1, 2026

Who pulls the permit and handles the inspection?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the permit is included in the price, and who pulls it and handles the inspection. Some noted permit timing can affect when the job is finished.

39% of the answers (98 of 252) brought this up.

Ask whether they pull the permit and handle the inspection.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get AC installation and replacement done in 33713 before the end of the month. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 8, 2026

Is removal of the old unit and related work included?

Answers told customers to ask whether the price includes taking away the old unit, a new thermostat, drain line work and any electrical changes. These items are where two similar quotes often differed.

27% of the answers (67 of 252) brought this up.

Ask whether each one includes permits, removal of the old unit and any ductwork changes.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for AC installation and replacement in 33781?”, October 13, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 30 of the 252 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 30 of its 76, ChatGPT in 0 of its 104 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 23 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 11 answers

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job, and they often could not verify reviews. A page with a working number and a clear way to request an in-home estimate answers what customers were told to look up.

I didn't find phone numbers in the results, so you'll need to get those from each company's website or Google listing.

— Claude, asked “AC installation and replacement near me — I'm in 33755. Who do you recommend?”, September 30, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 180 ChatGPT and Claude answers about AC installation and replacement, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 96% (173 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 66% (119 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 22% (39 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 11% (19 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 2% (4 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 74% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

The checks behind every recommendation, applied to AC installation and replacement

Can the customer reach a person?

Phone numbers were the thing assistants most often could not find. Some found pages that said to call but showed no number.

23 of the 252 answers about AC installation and replacement, 23 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.

What do recent customers say?

Assistants often could not verify ratings and noted when they came only from directories. Some told customers to ask for references from recent replacement jobs, not just repairs.

11 of the 252 answers about AC installation and replacement, 11 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 139 of the 569 conversations where it came up.

Do you serve the customer’s town or ZIP code?

For an installation, coverage means the company does in-home estimates and installs at the customer's address. Several answers found ZIP checkers saying the customer's ZIP code was not served.

1 of the 252 answers about AC installation and replacement, 1 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 350 of the 554 conversations where it came up.

Your AC installation and replacement page checklist

Work through this list on your AC installation and replacement page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “AC installation and replacement”, “air conditioner installation” or “new AC installation” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Say which brands you install, and show that every quote lists the model, size and efficiency rating.
  3. State the length of your labor warranty, what it covers, and who the customer calls to make a claim.
  4. Explain how you size a replacement system and whether a load calculation is part of every estimate.
  5. Say whether the ducts are inspected during the estimate, and how duct repairs or changes are quoted.
  6. Say that you pull the permit, whether the fee is in the quote, and how the final inspection is scheduled.
  7. List the related work your standard replacement includes, and name what is quoted separately.
  8. Put a working phone number and an estimate request form on the installation page.
  9. Link to your recent reviews and point to ones from customers who had a system replaced.
  10. List the towns and ZIP codes where you do in-home estimates and installations.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like AC installation and replacement, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What should an AC replacement quote include?

Answers about this job told customers to look for the brand, model, size and efficiency rating, plus the labor and equipment warranties and the permit. They also said to check whether ductwork, a thermostat and removal of the old unit are included. The page should show what its quotes list.

Do I need a load calculation to replace my AC?

Many assistants told customers to ask for a load calculation, often called Manual J, rather than matching the old unit's size. A page should explain how the company sizes a new system and whether that step is part of the estimate.

Is ductwork part of an AC replacement?

Not always. Assistants told customers to ask whether duct repairs or changes are in the quote and to have the ducts inspected. The page should say whether ducts are checked during the estimate and how that work is priced.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 9 and October 14, 2026, they answered 252 questions about AC installation and replacement: ChatGPT 104, Claude 76, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 252 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 9 and October 14, 2026. We asked for AC installation and replacement in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
