Who AI assistants recommend for AFCI breaker installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for AFCI breaker installation recommendations 292 times. Here is what they needed to see on an electrician’s page before naming it to install AFCI breakers.

The short answer

Before naming an electrician to install AFCI breakers, assistants looked for whether the company matches the breaker to the panel's brand and model. Then they wanted to know how it handles nuisance tripping, whether the price is per breaker or for the whole job, how many circuits it will convert, and whether a permit is needed.

What people actually asked

We asked for AFCI breaker installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 292 answers it produced between September 4 and October 11, 2026:

  • “Looking for someone to do AFCI breaker installation in 33755 in two weeks. Any recommendations?”103 answers, asked with five different timings: next month, in two weeks, sometime this month, in the next few weeks and before the end of the month
  • “Who should I call for AFCI breaker installation in Dunedin, FL 34698?”96 answers
  • “AFCI breaker installation near me — I'm in Tarpon Springs, FL. Who do you recommend?”93 answers

Together, the 292 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and Palm Harbor. Each town came up in 35 to 37 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 100 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “arc fault breaker installation” or “arc fault circuit interrupter install”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“How will you determine the appropriate protection for these circuits?” Device selection and applicable requirements should be confirmed for the installation rather than generalized online.

What your AFCI breaker installation page has to explain

AFCI breakers are not one-size-fits-all. Answers kept saying the breaker has to match the panel's maker and model, and told customers to give the panel brand when they call. Some suggested asking whether the right breaker is in stock. A page that explains how the electrician confirms compatibility before quoting shows the customer the job will not stall on the day.

A new AFCI can reveal problems that were already there. Assistants warned that older wiring and shared neutrals can make the breaker trip again and again. They told customers to ask whether the electrician will diagnose the circuit, not just swap the breaker, and whether troubleshooting is in the price. The page should explain what happens if a new breaker keeps tripping.

Customers also wanted to know what they were buying. Some needed one breaker, others wanted every bedroom and living-area circuit covered. Answers told customers to ask for a per-breaker price, any service call fee and testing after installation. A page that shows a documented job, with the circuits converted and the checks done, makes the scope clear.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 292 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for AFCI breaker installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Will the breaker match the panel?

Assistants regularly told customers that AFCI breakers must match the panel's brand and model. They suggested giving the panel brand when calling and asking the electrician to confirm the right breaker before quoting. A wrong breaker means a second visit.

46% of the answers (134 of 292) brought this up.

Ask whether the breakers are the right type for your panel brand.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for AFCI breaker installation in Tarpon Springs, FL?”, October 9, 2026

What if the new breaker keeps tripping?

Many answers warned that older wiring and shared neutrals can trip new AFCI breakers repeatedly. Assistants told customers to ask whether the electrician will diagnose the circuit and whether troubleshooting is included. One said not to accept a standard breaker as the fix.

39% of the answers (113 of 292) brought this up.

Ask for the total price, permit/inspection handling, and whether they’ll diagnose nuisance tripping or wiring issues before installing the breaker.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for AFCI breaker installation in 33772?”, October 2, 2026

Does this electrician list AFCI work?

Assistants often found electricians who listed panel and breaker service but never mentioned AFCI. Some advertised GFCI work more prominently. Those companies came with a note to ask before booking.

30% of the answers (89 of 292) brought this up.

Does the job need a permit?

Assistants were unsure whether a simple breaker swap needs a permit, and told customers to ask. Many said larger panel work does. Customers wanted the electrician to know the local rule and handle it.

21% of the answers (62 of 292) brought this up.

Ask whether they'll pull a permit and schedule the inspection.

— Claude, asked “AFCI breaker installation near me — I'm in Tarpon Springs, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 10, 2026

Is the price per breaker or for the whole job?

Assistants often told customers to ask whether the price is per breaker or a flat fee, and whether it covers the service call. They noted AFCI breakers cost more than standard ones and vary by panel brand.

20% of the answers (58 of 292) brought this up.

Ask if the price is per breaker or a flat fee, and whether it covers a diagnostic visit.

— Claude, asked “AFCI breaker installation near me — I'm in Largo, FL 33770. Who do you recommend?”, September 19, 2026

How many circuits will be converted?

Answers told customers to ask how many circuits the electrician will convert and whether any wiring fixes are included. Some suggested saying up front whether they want specific circuits or every circuit current code covers.

15% of the answers (44 of 292) brought this up.

Ask each one how many circuits they'll convert and whether any wiring fixes are included.

— Claude, asked “Looking for someone to do AFCI breaker installation in Palm Harbor, FL 34683 sometime this month. Any recommendations?”, October 11, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 38 of the 292 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 37 of its 100, ChatGPT in 1 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 19 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 14 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 11 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 4 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not verify reviews or a license. A page that names AFCI work, shows the license and gives a working number answers what they kept sending customers to check.

I didn't pull phone numbers because I couldn't confirm them from the search results.

— Claude, asked “Looking for someone to do AFCI breaker installation in 34689 next month. Any recommendations?”, September 20, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 220 ChatGPT and Claude answers about AFCI breaker installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 95% (210 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 62% (136 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 13% (28 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 10% (23 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 4% (9 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 68% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like AFCI breaker installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 292 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 11, 2026. We asked for AFCI breaker installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
