Who AI assistants recommend for air handler repair and installation
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for air handler repair and installation recommendations 347 times. Here is what they needed to see on an AC company's page before naming it for air handler work.
The short answer
Before naming a company for air handler repair and installation, assistants first needed to know whether it repairs air handlers or only replaces them. They wanted repair and replacement priced separately. Then they looked for how a new unit is matched to the outdoor condenser and what the quote covers.

Together, the 347 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 42 to 44 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 152, Claude 125 and Google AI Mode 70.
Customers also call it “air handler replacement” or “indoor air handler service”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Can you repair this air handler, or are you proposing a replacement?” Repair and replacement involve different evidence, authorization and compatibility questions.
What your air handler repair and installation page has to explain
Many AC companies list repair and installation, but few pages mention the air handler by name. Assistants often could not tell whether a company works on indoor units, or mostly on outdoor condensers. Many answers ended by telling the customer to ask. A page that names air handler repair and air handler replacement as separate services, and the brands the company works on, removes that doubt.
Repair and replacement are different decisions. Answers told customers to get a written diagnosis first, then repair and replacement prices side by side, before approving work. Some said to get a second quote before agreeing to a replacement. An example that shows the fault found, the options offered and the remedy the customer chose makes that difference plain.
A new air handler also has to fit the system that stays. Answers told customers to ask whether the new unit matches the outdoor condenser and coil, and whether the whole system should be replaced together. The page should explain how the company checks that match. It should also say what the quote includes, such as the drain pan, float switch, permit and removal of the old unit.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 347 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for air handler repair and installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Will a new air handler match the outdoor unit?
Many answers told customers to ask whether a new air handler matches the outdoor condenser and coil. Some warned that a mismatch can cut efficiency or affect the warranty, and asked whether the whole system should be replaced together.
26% of the answers (90 of 347) brought this up.
Ask whether the new air handler will match your outdoor condenser.
Is the company quoting a repair or a replacement?
Assistants regularly told customers to ask whether a quote was for repairing or replacing the air handler, and to get both in writing. Some suggested asking for a repair price before agreeing to a replacement on a newer system.
25% of the answers (88 of 347) brought this up.
Ask each company for two written options: repair versus replacement.
What does the replacement quote cover?
Answers told customers to ask whether a replacement quote includes the drain pan and float switch, thermostat wiring, the permit, removal of the old unit and the labor warranty. A price for the unit alone did not show the full job.
20% of the answers (71 of 347) brought this up.
Ask whether the quote includes permits, new drain/float-switch work, matching the indoor coil and outdoor unit, labor warranty, and disposal of the old air handler.
Does the company work on air handlers specifically?
Assistants often found AC companies whose listings never mentioned air handlers. They told customers to ask whether the company repairs and installs indoor units, and whether it works on their brand, before booking.
13% of the answers (46 of 347) brought this up.
Ask whether they repair and install air handlers, not just outdoor AC units.
What does the diagnostic visit cost?
Some answers told customers to ask about the diagnostic or trip fee, and whether it is credited toward the repair if they go ahead. For an urgent repair, that fee is the first cost a customer agrees to.
10% of the answers (35 of 347) brought this up.
Ask for the earliest arrival window and whether the diagnostic fee is waived if you approve the repair.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 46 of the 347 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 46 of its 125, ChatGPT in 0 of its 152 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 70. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 31 answers
- When the company could do the work: 10 answers
- Reviews it could check: 6 answers
Assistants most often could not find phone numbers for this job, and many could not confirm that any company works on air handlers at all. A page that names air handler work and gives a working number answers what they kept telling customers to ask.
I couldn't confirm a phone number for most of these companies, and none of the listings I found mention air handlers specifically.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 277 ChatGPT and Claude answers about air handler repair and installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 98% (272 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 53% (148 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 19% (54 answers)
- An official license lookup: 9% (24 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: 2% (6 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 79% of its 70 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like air handler repair and installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
Should I repair or replace my air handler?
Assistants told customers to get a written diagnosis and both a repair price and a replacement price before deciding. They mentioned the age of the system and whether the outdoor unit still matches. A page should explain how the company presents both options.
Does a new air handler have to match the outdoor unit?
Answers often said a new air handler should be matched to the outdoor condenser and coil, and warned that a mismatch can cut efficiency or affect the warranty. A page should explain how the company checks the match before quoting.
What should an air handler replacement quote include?
Answers told customers to look for the unit's model, labor, the drain pan and float switch, thermostat wiring, the permit, removal of the old unit and the labor warranty. A page that lists these on separate lines lets customers compare quotes.

How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 347 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 5 and October 14, 2026. We asked for air handler repair and installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
