Who AI assistants recommend for an asphalt shingle roof replacement

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for an asphalt shingle roof replacement recommendations 309 times. Here is what they needed to see on a roofer’s page before naming it for a shingle roof replacement.

The short answer

Before naming a roofer for a shingle replacement, assistants wanted the quote broken into parts a customer could compare. They looked for how rotted decking is priced, the underlayment, the exact shingle line and wind rating, the manufacturer and workmanship warranties, and who pulls the permit.

What people actually asked

We asked for an asphalt shingle roof replacement in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 309 answers it produced between September 4 and October 11, 2026:

  • “Who should I call for asphalt shingle roof replacement in Seminole, FL 33772?”104 answers
  • “I'm looking to get asphalt shingle roof replacement done in 33755 next month. Who should I get quotes from?”103 answers, asked with five different timings: next month, sometime this month, in the next few weeks, before the end of the month and in two weeks
  • “Asphalt shingle roof replacement near me — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL. Who do you recommend?”102 answers

Together, the 309 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 37 to 39 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 117 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “shingle roof installation”, “architectural shingle roof” or “3-tab shingle roof”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Which shingle system and installation work are included in the proposal?” Material choices, installation scope and warranty conditions should be stated separately.

What your asphalt shingle roof replacement page has to explain

Customers asked who to get quotes from, and assistants answered by telling them what every quote should contain. Most answers listed the same parts: tear-off, decking replacement priced per sheet, underlayment, flashing, the shingle brand and line, permit and warranty. They warned that quotes often differ on decking. A roofer's page that lays out its standard scope in that order is easy to compare and easy to recommend.

Material, installation and warranty are three separate promises. The shingle line and its wind rating come from the manufacturer. The underlayment, fasteners and attachment come from the crew. The warranty may be the manufacturer's, the roofer's or both. Assistants told customers to ask which warranty covers what, for how long, and whether it will be registered. The page should state each one apart rather than as a single lifetime claim.

In Florida, a shingle roof is also an insurance document. Answers told customers to ask about wind-rated installation and a wind mitigation inspection after the job, since it can lower the insurance premium. They also asked who pulls the permit and schedules the final inspection. A page that says the roofer handles both, and hands over the paperwork, answers questions customers were told to raise on every call.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 309 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for an asphalt shingle roof replacement, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

How are tear-off and rotted decking priced?

Assistants told customers to ask how rotted decking is priced, often per sheet, because that is where quotes differ most. They also asked whether tear-off of the old roof is included. A customer cannot compare two shingle quotes without knowing this.

58% of the answers (179 of 309) brought this up.

Ask how rotted decking is priced, since that's where quotes often differ.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get asphalt shingle roof replacement done in 33781 sometime this month. Who should I get quotes from?”, September 20, 2026

What goes under the shingles?

Most answers told customers to ask what underlayment the roofer uses and whether the price includes a secondary water barrier. Some named peel-and-stick underlayment as the better choice in heavy rain. Customers could not see this part of the roof once it was done.

53% of the answers (165 of 309) brought this up.

Ask whether the price includes a secondary water barrier and ring-shank nails, and who pulls the permit.

— Claude, asked “Asphalt shingle roof replacement near me — I'm in Dunedin, FL 34698. Who do you recommend?”, September 19, 2026

Which shingle brand and line will go on the roof?

Assistants told customers to ask for the exact shingle brand and line in writing, not just architectural shingles. That detail sets the look, the wind rating and the warranty. Two quotes with different shingle lines are not the same job.

53% of the answers (163 of 309) brought this up.

Ask which shingle line and wind rating they'll use, and whether the price includes tear-off and decking repair.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for asphalt shingle roof replacement in 34689?”, October 2, 2026

Is the installation wind-rated for insurance?

Many answers told customers to ask about the shingle's wind rating, code-compliant installation and a wind mitigation inspection afterward. Several said a wind-rated roof can lower the homeowner's insurance premium. For Florida customers, this is part of what the new roof is worth.

43% of the answers (134 of 309) brought this up.

Ask for wind-rated shingles and corrosion-resistant fasteners, which matter in a coastal area.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for asphalt shingle roof replacement in Palm Harbor, FL 34683?”, October 9, 2026

Who backs the warranty, and for how long?

Assistants told customers to ask about both the manufacturer's shingle warranty and the roofer's own workmanship warranty. They asked whether the warranty is backed by the manufacturer or only by the contractor, and whether it will be registered. These are different promises with different terms.

41% of the answers (126 of 309) brought this up.

Ask whether the warranty is backed by the manufacturer or only by the contractor.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get asphalt shingle roof replacement done in 33755 next month. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 11, 2026

Who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection?

Answers told customers to confirm the roofer pulls the re-roof permit, includes it in the price and schedules the final inspection. Some tied permit timing to the start date. Customers wanted that handled for them.

36% of the answers (111 of 309) brought this up.

Ask who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get asphalt shingle roof replacement done in 33755 next month. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 11, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 33 of the 309 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 33 of its 117, ChatGPT in 0 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 23 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 6 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 4 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 3 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 3 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and could rarely find reliable pricing for a shingle replacement. Some listings showed only repair work, so assistants told customers to ask whether the roofer does full replacements.

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 237 ChatGPT and Claude answers about an asphalt shingle roof replacement, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 98% (232 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 75% (177 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 30% (70 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 27% (63 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (1 answer)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 89% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

  2. State that tear-off is included, your price per sheet of replaced decking, and how you show the customer what you found.
  3. Name the underlayment and water barrier in your standard shingle replacement, and what an upgrade would add.
  4. List the shingle brands and lines you install, and put the chosen line on every written quote.
  5. Say how your shingle installs meet the wind requirements and whether a wind mitigation inspection is included.
  6. State your workmanship warranty and its length, which manufacturer warranty applies, and that you register it for the customer.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like an asphalt shingle roof replacement, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What should an asphalt shingle roof replacement quote include?

Answers listed tear-off, decking replacement priced per sheet, underlayment and water barrier, flashing, the exact shingle line and wind rating, permit, and the manufacturer and workmanship warranties. A roofer's page should show its standard scope in those terms so quotes can be compared.

What is the difference between a manufacturer and workmanship warranty on a shingle roof?

The manufacturer's warranty covers the shingles. The workmanship warranty is the roofer's own promise about the installation. Assistants told customers to ask about both, and whether the manufacturer warranty will be registered. The page should state each one separately.

Can a new shingle roof lower my homeowners insurance?

Several answers said a wind-rated installation and a wind mitigation inspection afterward can lower the premium. They did not promise any amount. A roofer's page should say whether it provides that inspection and paperwork.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 11, 2026, they answered 309 questions about an asphalt shingle roof replacement: ChatGPT 120, Claude 117, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 309 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 11, 2026. We asked for an asphalt shingle roof replacement in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
