Who AI assistants recommend for cedar shake roof repair
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for cedar shake roof repair recommendations 261 times. Here is what they needed to see on a roofer’s page before naming it for a cedar shake repair.
The short answer
Before naming a roofer for cedar shake repair, assistants first needed proof that it repairs real wood shake, not only asphalt or a synthetic look-alike. Then they looked for recent cedar jobs with photos, matching shakes, a check of the decking for rot, and repairs to single shakes.

What people actually asked
We asked for cedar shake roof repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 261 answers it produced between September 5 and October 12, 2026:
- “I need cedar shake roof repair today — I'm in 33713. Who can actually come out?”92 answers, asked with five different timings: today, within the next few hours, tomorrow morning, tonight and first thing tomorrow
- “Who should I call for cedar shake roof repair in Pinellas Park, FL 33781?”85 answers
- “Cedar shake roof repair near me — I'm in Clearwater, FL. Who do you recommend?”84 answers
Together, the 261 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg and Seminole. Each town came up in 31 to 34 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 93 and Google AI Mode 48.
Customers also call it “cedar shake roof replacement”, “wood shake roofing” or “cedar shingle roof repair”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Do you repair cedar shake roofs like mine?” A specialty material claim should be supported by relevant work and a clear statement of limitations.
What your cedar shake roof repair page has to explain
Cedar shake is a niche skill, and most roofers' pages never mention it. Assistants kept finding roofers whose services listed shingle, tile, metal and flat roofs, and told customers to ask about cedar first. Some pages about shake turned out to describe a synthetic product. A page that names real cedar shake repair, with recent jobs shown, is what was missing.
Answers asked for more than a claim of experience. They told customers to ask how many cedar repairs the roofer had done recently, and to see photos or a nearby address to look at. A roofer that shows real cedar jobs, with what was repaired on each, gives customers the proof they were told to request.
Wood shake brings its own questions about material and condition. Answers told customers to ask whether the roofer can match weathered shakes, uses treated cedar, and will check the decking and underlayment for rot. They also asked whether the roofer would replace only the damaged shakes. The page should say how the crew decides between a spot repair and a larger job.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 261 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for cedar shake roof repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Can the leak be stopped before the shakes arrive?
For a leaking shake roof, answers told customers to ask for a tarp or temporary dry-in if the permanent repair could not happen right away. They also told customers to ask whether the crew would have cedar on hand or come back with it.
46% of the answers (121 of 261) brought this up.
Ask whether they can do a permanent cedar shake repair today or at least tarp/stop the leak today and return with matching shakes.
Does the roofer repair real wood shake?
Assistants regularly told customers to ask whether a roofer has worked on cedar shake, not just shingles. Some pages that mentioned shake were about a synthetic look-alike, so answers told customers to confirm the roofer repairs real wood.
42% of the answers (110 of 261) brought this up.
Ask whether they've worked on cedar shake before, not just shingles.
Will the roofer replace only the damaged shakes?
Assistants told customers to ask whether the roofer would replace only the damaged shakes or push a full replacement. Some also asked whether a company takes small repairs at all, or only bigger jobs.
24% of the answers (63 of 261) brought this up.
Ask whether they’ll do a targeted repair, whether matching cedar shakes are available, and confirm license/insurance before scheduling.
Can the roofer show recent cedar jobs?
Answers told customers to ask how many cedar shake repairs the roofer has done recently, and to see photos or an address to look at. Because few roofers do this work, proof of real cedar jobs separated a lead from a recommendation.
23% of the answers (60 of 261) brought this up.
Ask how many cedar shake repairs they've done recently, and ask for photos or a nearby address you can look at.
Will the roofer check underneath for rot?
Answers told customers to ask whether the roofer will check the decking and underlayment under damaged shakes, and how it handles rot it finds. Customers wanted to know the repair would not cover up a bigger problem.
17% of the answers (45 of 261) brought this up.
Ask whether they'll check the decking under the damaged shakes.
Can the roofer match the existing shakes?
Assistants told customers to ask whether the roofer can match the existing shakes, including weathered ones, and whether it uses treated cedar. Some warned that most roofing trucks do not carry cedar, so sourcing decides how soon the repair can happen.
11% of the answers (29 of 261) brought this up.
Ask whether they can match your existing shakes and confirm their current license/insurance before scheduling.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 62 of the 261 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 56 of its 93, ChatGPT in 6 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 48. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 23 answers
- When the company could do the work: 19 answers
- Reviews it could check: 6 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 4 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 4 answers
- A price or how the job is priced: 3 answers
Assistants most often could not confirm that any nearby roofer works on cedar shake, and often found no phone number. A page that names cedar shake repair, shows real jobs and lists a working number answers what they kept telling customers to ask.
I didn't find that any of them list cedar shake work.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 213 ChatGPT and Claude answers about cedar shake roof repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 98% (209 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 44% (94 answers)
- An official license lookup: 9% (20 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 2% (5 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (2 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 81% of its 48 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like cedar shake roof repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
What should a cedar shake repair page show?
Answers about this job wanted proof the roofer repairs real wood shake, photos of recent cedar jobs, how matching shakes are sourced, and whether the crew checks for rot underneath. They also asked whether the roofer will replace only the damaged shakes.
Is a synthetic shake roof repaired the same way as cedar?
Assistants told customers to ask whether a roofer has repaired natural cedar shake, not a synthetic cedar-look product. A page should say which of the two the crew works on, and show examples of each it repairs.
When does a cedar shake roof need more than a spot repair?
Assistants told customers to ask whether repair makes sense or the roof is near the end of its life. A page that explains what the crew checks, such as decking and underlayment, and how it decides, helps the customer trust the advice.

How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 261 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 5 and October 12, 2026. We asked for cedar shake roof repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
