Who AI assistants recommend for commercial HVAC repair

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for commercial HVAC repair recommendations 476 times. Here is what they needed to see on an HVAC company's page before naming it for a repair at a business.

The short answer

Assistants first needed proof that a company takes commercial jobs at all, since most local pages read as residential. Then they looked for the equipment it services, how fast it can arrive, its diagnostic and after-hours fees, and references from other businesses.

What people actually asked

We asked for commercial HVAC repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 476 answers it produced between September 9 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Commercial HVAC repair near me — I'm in 33713. Who do you recommend?”162 answers
  • “Who should I call for commercial HVAC repair in Pinellas Park, FL 33781?”160 answers
  • “I need commercial HVAC repair first thing tomorrow — I'm in 33772. Who can actually come out?”154 answers, asked with five different timings: today, first thing tomorrow, tomorrow morning, tonight and within the next few hours

Together, the 476 answers covered 45 towns in Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Pinellas County: including Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor and Pinellas Park. Each town came up in 6 to 32 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 215, Claude 189 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “rooftop unit repair”, “RTU service”, “package unit repair” or “light commercial HVAC service”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Can you service our commercial equipment around operating hours?” Building use, equipment type and access arrangements distinguish a commercial call from a residential repair.

What your commercial HVAC repair page has to explain

Most HVAC pages in these answers were written for homeowners. Assistants often could not tell whether a company would take a business call, and told customers to ask before booking. Some listings said residential and light commercial, which left larger buildings unsure. A page that says which kinds of buildings the company serves, from small shops to larger properties, answers that first question.

A business owner calls about specific equipment, not just an AC. Answers told customers to name the rooftop unit, package unit, split system, chiller or refrigeration they had. They also asked whether the technician carries common parts on the truck. The page should list the equipment the company works on and the brands its technicians know.

Timing matters differently here. Customers wanted a firm arrival window and asked whether a technician could arrive before the business opened. Answers told them to get a written diagnosis and estimate before authorizing work. A page that explains how the company schedules around operating hours, handles site access and gets approval for repairs fits how these customers decide.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 476 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for commercial HVAC repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Does the company service this kind of equipment?

Answers told customers to ask whether a company regularly works on their equipment, such as rooftop units, split systems, chillers or refrigeration. Some warned that a light commercial company may not handle a large rooftop unit or chiller.

43% of the answers (203 of 476) brought this up.

Ask each one whether they regularly service your type of equipment, such as rooftop units, split systems, or refrigeration.

— Claude, asked “Commercial HVAC repair near me — I'm in Pinellas Park, FL. Who do you recommend?”, September 30, 2026

How soon can a technician arrive, and can it be before opening?

Customers often needed someone today or first thing tomorrow. Assistants told them to ask for a firm arrival window, and some asked whether a technician could arrive before the business opened. Answers could not see anyone's schedule.

36% of the answers (171 of 476) brought this up.

Ask whether they charge a diagnostic or after-hours fee, and whether they can reach you before your opening time.

— Claude, asked “I need commercial HVAC repair first thing tomorrow — I'm in 33772. Who can actually come out?”, October 1, 2026

What are the diagnostic and after-hours fees?

Answers regularly told customers to ask for the diagnostic or dispatch fee and any after-hours surcharge before a technician is sent. Some asked whether the fee is credited toward the repair. Customers also wanted a written estimate before authorizing work.

34% of the answers (161 of 476) brought this up.

Ask for the diagnostic fee, emergency surcharge, licensing/insurance confirmation, and a written repair estimate before authorizing work.

— ChatGPT, asked “Commercial HVAC repair near me — I'm in Largo, FL 33770. Who do you recommend?”, October 7, 2026

Does the company take commercial jobs?

Assistants often found HVAC pages that read as residential and could not confirm commercial work. They told customers to ask each company about commercial service first. A clear statement moved a company from a lead to a match.

18% of the answers (86 of 476) brought this up.

Most of the ones I found describe residential work, so ask each one about commercial service before you book.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for commercial HVAC repair in Crystal Beach, FL 34681?”, October 11, 2026

Does the company offer commercial maintenance contracts?

Some answers told customers to ask about maintenance contracts along with emergency response. A contract was seen as a way to get faster service the next time equipment fails.

16% of the answers (76 of 476) brought this up.

Can the company show references from other businesses?

When reviews were thin or about homes, assistants told customers to ask for commercial references. They suggested property managers or owners of similar buildings. Reviews of residential jobs did not settle the question for a business.

10% of the answers (46 of 476) brought this up.

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 145 of the 476 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 140 of its 189, ChatGPT in 5 of its 215 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 102 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 47 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 25 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 19 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 7 answers
  • A warranty: 3 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm a company did commercial work or could arrive soon. A page with a direct commercial line, a clear commercial statement and response times would fill those gaps.

I didn't confirm whether they take commercial jobs.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for commercial HVAC repair in Belleair Beach, FL 33786?”, October 11, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 404 ChatGPT and Claude answers about commercial HVAC repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 99% (401 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 37% (149 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 12% (48 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 5% (19 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 2% (8 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 79% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like commercial HVAC repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What should a commercial HVAC repair page say?

Answers about this job most often looked for a clear statement of commercial work, the equipment serviced, response times, diagnostic and after-hours fees, and references from other businesses. A page that answers these helps a business owner choose without calling every company.

How is commercial HVAC repair different from residential?

Commercial calls involve equipment such as rooftop units, chillers and refrigeration, and they often must fit around a business's hours. Assistants told customers to confirm the company handles their equipment and can arrive before opening. The page should explain how it handles both.

Do commercial HVAC companies charge after-hours fees?

Many answers told customers to ask about after-hours or emergency rates before a technician is sent. The answers did not find a standard fee. A page should state its own after-hours rate and whether the diagnostic fee applies to the repair.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 9 and October 14, 2026, they answered 476 questions about commercial HVAC repair: ChatGPT 215, Claude 189, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 476 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 9 and October 14, 2026. We asked for commercial HVAC repair in 45 towns in Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
