Who AI assistants recommend for dimmer switch installation
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for dimmer switch installation recommendations 309 times. Here is what they needed to see on an electrician’s page before naming it to install a dimmer.
The short answer
Before naming an electrician for a dimmer, assistants wanted to know the dimmer would work with the customer's lights, especially LED bulbs. They also looked for whether the company takes small jobs, handles three-way and smart dimmers, and what the minimum service charge is.

What people actually asked
We asked for dimmer switch installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 309 answers it produced between September 4 and October 11, 2026:
- “Looking for someone to do dimmer switch installation in 33713 in two weeks. Any recommendations?”104 answers, asked with five different timings: next month, in the next few weeks, in two weeks, before the end of the month and sometime this month
- “Who should I call for dimmer switch installation in 33770?”103 answers
- “Dimmer switch installation near me — I'm in 34698. Who do you recommend?”102 answers
Together, the 309 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Largo, Palm Harbor, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, Pinellas Park and Seminole. Each town came up in 38 to 39 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 117 and Google AI Mode 72.
Customers also call it “dimmer switch repair” or “LED dimmer install”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Will the dimmer work with my existing lights?” The desired control and the installed lighting need a compatibility check.
What your dimmer switch installation page has to explain
A dimmer looks like the simplest job an electrician does, but the answers kept coming back to one question. Will it work with the lights already in place? Assistants told customers to say whether their bulbs are LED and to ask for a dimmer made for that load. Some mentioned flicker and buzzing when the two do not match. A page that explains how the electrician checks the fixture before choosing a dimmer answers that worry.
The switch itself matters too. Answers asked whether the switch is single-pole or controls a light from more than one place, and whether the customer wants a smart dimmer. Several said smart dimmers often need a neutral wire in the switch box, which older homes may lack. The page should say what happens when the box, wiring or bulbs need changing, and how that is priced.
Because the job is small, price was mostly about the visit. Assistants told customers to ask about a minimum service-call fee, whether the price is flat or hourly, and whether the dimmer is included. Several suggested doing several switches or other small jobs in one visit. Customers also asked whether the electrician will install a dimmer they already bought.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 309 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for dimmer switch installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Will the dimmer work with the existing lights?
Most answers told customers to say whether their bulbs are LED and to ask for a dimmer that matches them. Assistants mentioned flicker and buzzing from mismatched dimmers. Customers wanted the electrician to confirm the match before installing anything.
51% of the answers (158 of 309) brought this up.
Ask for a quote and confirm the dimmer is compatible with your bulbs and fixture.
Can it be a smart dimmer?
Many customers wanted smart dimmers, and assistants told them to ask whether the switch box has a neutral wire. Answers said older homes sometimes do not. Customers wanted to know what happens if the box needs work first.
35% of the answers (109 of 309) brought this up.
Ask whether your switch box has a neutral wire.
Is it a single-pole or three-way switch?
Many answers told customers to mention whether the light is controlled from one switch or from more than one place. Assistants said this changes which dimmer is needed and the price. Customers were told to include it when asking for a quote.
32% of the answers (98 of 309) brought this up.
Is there a minimum service-call fee?
Assistants regularly told customers to ask about a minimum service-call or trip fee. They said a single dimmer is quick, so the visit fee can be most of the cost. Customers wanted that number before booking.
31% of the answers (96 of 309) brought this up.
Ask whether there’s a minimum service-call fee, because a single dimmer can be a quick job unless wiring or fixture compatibility is tricky.
Will the electrician take a job this small?
Assistants often could not tell whether a company takes small jobs like a single dimmer. Some listings looked focused on larger or low-voltage work. Answers told customers to ask before booking.
24% of the answers (74 of 309) brought this up.
Ask each company whether they do small jobs like a dimmer swap.
Is it a flat price, and can several switches be done at once?
Answers told customers to ask for a flat price and whether it includes the dimmer. Several suggested doing more switches or other small jobs in the same visit to spread the cost. Customers wanted a per-switch price they could plan around.
23% of the answers (71 of 309) brought this up.
Ask whether they'll swap several switches in one visit to spread that cost.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 38 of the 309 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 37 of its 117, ChatGPT in 1 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 27 answers
- Reviews it could check: 8 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 7 answers
- A price or how the job is priced: 5 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 5 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and several could not confirm that a company lists dimmer installs at all. A page that names the job, the price and a direct number answers what they kept telling customers to call about.
I couldn't find phone numbers for any of these, and I couldn't confirm that any of them lists dimmer installation as a service.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 237 ChatGPT and Claude answers about dimmer switch installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 98% (233 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 66% (156 answers)
- An official license lookup: 11% (26 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 5% (11 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: 2% (4 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 68% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like dimmer switch installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 309 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 11, 2026. We asked for dimmer switch installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
