Who AI assistants recommend for doorbell wiring and installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for doorbell wiring and installation recommendations 293 times. Here is what they needed to see on an electrician’s page before naming it for a doorbell job.

The short answer

Before naming an electrician for a doorbell, assistants first needed proof the company takes doorbell jobs at all. Then they told customers to ask whether the quote covers the transformer, new low-voltage wire, the chime, mounting and setting up the app.

What people actually asked

We asked for doorbell wiring and installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 293 answers it produced between September 5 and October 12, 2026:

  • “Looking for someone to do doorbell wiring and installation in 34698 next month. Any recommendations?”103 answers, asked with five different timings: before the end of the month, in two weeks, sometime this month, in the next few weeks and next month
  • “Doorbell wiring and installation near me — I'm in 34683. Who do you recommend?”95 answers
  • “Who should I call for doorbell wiring and installation in Seminole, FL?”95 answers

Together, the 293 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Palm Harbor, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, Largo and Pinellas Park. Each town came up in 36 to 37 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 101 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “doorbell transformer installation” or “smart doorbell wiring”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Will this doorbell work with my existing wiring and chime?” Wired fitting, device compatibility and app setup are different parts of the customer request.

What your doorbell wiring and installation page has to explain

Most electricians list panels, outlets and fans, and say nothing about doorbells. Assistants often found a well-rated company and still could not tell whether it would come out for a doorbell. Some warned that shops prefer bigger work. A page that names doorbell jobs, video doorbells included, answers the first question customers were told to ask.

A doorbell job is really three requests. There is the wired part: the transformer, the wire and the chime. There is the device: whether a given smart doorbell works with what the house already has. And there is the account: mounting it and connecting it to Wi-Fi and the app. Customers could not tell which of these an electrician would handle.

The answers kept asking about the transformer. Many said smart doorbells need more power than an old transformer gives, and that older homes often need a new one. The page should explain how the electrician checks the existing transformer and chime, what happens when either falls short, and whether that is in the price.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 293 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for doorbell wiring and installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Will the existing transformer power a smart doorbell?

Assistants regularly told customers to ask whether the electrician would test the transformer and replace it if needed. Many said smart doorbells need steady low-voltage power that older transformers do not supply.

50% of the answers (146 of 293) brought this up.

Ask whether they can verify/replace the transformer, since smart doorbells often need adequate low-voltage power.

— ChatGPT, asked “Looking for someone to do doorbell wiring and installation in Largo, FL sometime this month. Any recommendations?”, September 14, 2026

Is there doorbell wire already, or does new wire need to run?

Answers told customers to find out first whether the house already has doorbell wire. Running new wire through walls or stucco changed the price, and customers wanted to know if wall repair was included.

22% of the answers (63 of 293) brought this up.

Ask whether you need new wiring, or whether you have an existing doorbell wire and transformer.

— Claude, asked “Looking for someone to do doorbell wiring and installation in 34698 next month. Any recommendations?”, September 21, 2026

Does the job include setting up the app?

Many answers told customers to confirm the installer would connect the doorbell to Wi-Fi and set up the app. Customers treated setup as part of the job, but few electricians said whether they did it.

15% of the answers (45 of 293) brought this up.

Ask whether they handle transformer upgrades, fishing new low-voltage wire, and smart doorbell setup before booking.

— ChatGPT, asked “Looking for someone to do doorbell wiring and installation in Tarpon Springs, FL 34689 next month. Any recommendations?”, September 21, 2026

Is there a minimum charge for a small job?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the electrician takes small jobs and charges a flat price or a minimum service fee. For a doorbell, a minimum charge could cost more than the work.

15% of the answers (44 of 293) brought this up.

Ask whether they take small jobs and whether there's a minimum service charge.

— Claude, asked “Doorbell wiring and installation near me — I'm in 33713. Who do you recommend?”, September 20, 2026

Does the electrician do doorbells at all?

Assistants often could not find doorbells on an electrician's page and told customers to ask. Some found only a handyman or a security company that clearly listed the work.

8% of the answers (22 of 293) brought this up.

I didn't see any of them advertise doorbells specifically, so ask when you call.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for doorbell wiring and installation in Seminole, FL?”, October 10, 2026

Will the doorbell work with the existing chime?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the quote covers the chime, and whether it needs replacing or a bypass adapter. Customers wanted the new doorbell to ring inside the house, not just on a phone.

5% of the answers (16 of 293) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote includes the transformer, new low-voltage wire, chime compatibility, mounting, and setup.

— ChatGPT, asked “Doorbell wiring and installation near me — I'm in Clearwater, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 4, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 48 of the 293 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 47 of its 101, ChatGPT in 1 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 27 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 14 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 8 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 6 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 6 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 5 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm that a company did doorbells at all. A page that names this job, lists a working number and links to doorbell reviews answers what they kept telling customers to check.

I couldn't find a verified phone number for any local electrician, so I haven't made one up.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for doorbell wiring and installation in Clearwater, FL?”, October 10, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 221 ChatGPT and Claude answers about doorbell wiring and installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 98% (216 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 57% (127 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 14% (30 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 5% (10 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 65% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your doorbell wiring and installation page checklist

Work through this list on your doorbell wiring and installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “doorbell wiring and installation”, “doorbell transformer installation” or “smart doorbell wiring” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Explain how you check the existing transformer and say whether a replacement is part of the quoted price.
  3. Describe how you handle a home with no doorbell wire, including routing new wire and patching the wall.
  4. State whether you connect the doorbell to Wi-Fi and set up the app, and name the devices you have installed.
  5. Give a flat price or starting price for a doorbell install, and say whether a minimum service fee applies.
  6. Give doorbell installs their own page and show a finished job with the device and setup named.
  7. Say how you make a new doorbell work with the existing chime, and when the chime has to be replaced.
  8. Put a working phone number and a way to book on the doorbell page itself.
  9. Link to recent reviews and point to ones that mention doorbell installs.
  10. List the towns and ZIP codes where you take doorbell jobs, and any travel fee.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like doorbell wiring and installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

Do I need an electrician to install a video doorbell?

Assistants said it depends on the house. A swap onto working doorbell wire is simple, but a weak transformer, missing wire or an old chime may need an electrician. The page should explain which of these the electrician handles and which the homeowner can skip.

Why would a smart doorbell need a new transformer?

Answers often said smart doorbells need more steady power than older doorbell transformers supply. Assistants told customers to ask whether the electrician tests the transformer and whether a replacement is in the quote, so the page should say both.

Will an electrician set up the doorbell app?

Assistants told customers to confirm this before booking, because some installers only do the wiring and mounting. A page should say whether the job includes connecting the doorbell to Wi-Fi and setting up the app.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 5 and October 12, 2026, they answered 293 questions about doorbell wiring and installation: ChatGPT 120, Claude 101, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 293 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 5 and October 12, 2026. We asked for doorbell wiring and installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
