Who AI assistants recommend for ductless mini-split repair

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for ductless mini-split repair recommendations 261 times. Here is what they needed to see on an HVAC company’s page before naming it to fix a mini-split.

The short answer

Before naming a company to fix a mini-split, assistants needed to know it repairs ductless units, not only installs them, and works on the customer's brand. Then they looked for the diagnostic fee, whether it counts toward the repair, and whether the technician could arrive soon with the right parts.

What people actually asked

We asked for ductless mini-split repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 261 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Who should I call for ductless mini-split repair in 33713?”96 answers
  • “I need ductless mini-split repair first thing tomorrow — I'm in Clearwater, FL 33755. Who can actually come out?”88 answers, asked with five different timings: first thing tomorrow, tomorrow morning, tonight, today and within the next few hours
  • “Ductless mini-split repair near me — I'm in Seminole, FL 33772. Who do you recommend?”77 answers

Together, the 261 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Seminole and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 32 to 33 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 93 and Google AI Mode 56.

Customers also call it “mini-split repair”, “ductless AC repair” or “ductless system repair”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Do you service the ductless system already installed in my home?” Support for an existing make or configuration should be established before promising a repair appointment.

What your ductless mini-split repair page has to explain

Mini-splits are less common than central air, and answers treated them as more brand-specific. Assistants told customers to ask whether a company works on their brand before booking. Some companies only service the brands they sell. A page that names the brands the company repairs, including ones it did not install, answers the first question every customer is told to ask.

Many pages about mini-splits are really about installing them. Assistants often found a ductless page and still could not tell whether the company repairs those units. Several answers sent customers to ask, because the page only described new systems. A repair page that names common problems, such as error codes, water leaking from the indoor unit or a unit that will not cool, shows the company fixes them.

Customers with a broken unit wanted to know what the first visit costs and what happens next. Answers told them to ask for the diagnostic fee, whether it is credited toward the repair and whether they would get a written estimate first. Parts mattered too, because mini-split boards and sensors can take time to arrive. The page should explain how a repair visit runs from call to fix.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 261 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for ductless mini-split repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Does the company work on the customer's brand?

The question assistants told customers to ask most was whether a company services their mini-split brand. Answers said mini-splits are more brand-specific than central air, and some companies only fix the brands they sell. Without a brand list, a company stayed a maybe.

49% of the answers (128 of 261) brought this up.

Ask whether they service brands other than the ones they sell.

— Claude, asked “Ductless mini-split repair near me — I'm in 33713. Who do you recommend?”, October 13, 2026

What details help the company know it can fix the unit?

Many answers asked the customer for the error code, the symptoms or the brand and model before suggesting who to call. Assistants told customers to ask whether a company can read mini-split error codes. These details let a company say up front whether it is the right fit.

41% of the answers (106 of 261) brought this up.

Ask whether they service your mini-split brand, whether they can diagnose error codes, and what their trip/diagnostic fee is before booking.

— ChatGPT, asked “Ductless mini-split repair near me — I'm in 33781. Who do you recommend?”, September 29, 2026

What is the diagnostic fee, and does it count toward the repair?

Assistants regularly told customers to ask what the diagnostic or trip fee is and whether it is credited toward the repair. Many also said to get a written estimate before work starts. Customers wanted to know the cost of finding out what is wrong.

35% of the answers (92 of 261) brought this up.

Ask if they charge a diagnostic or trip fee, and whether it's credited toward the repair.

— Claude, asked “I need ductless mini-split repair tomorrow morning — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL 34683. Who can actually come out?”, September 30, 2026

Does the company repair mini-splits or only install them?

Assistants often found a company's ductless page and could not tell if it does repairs, because the page only covered new installs. Other listings named AC repair but never mentioned mini-splits. Either way, answers sent customers to call and ask.

30% of the answers (78 of 261) brought this up.

The page I found is about installation, so ask whether they do repairs.

— Claude, asked “I need ductless mini-split repair tomorrow morning — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL. Who can actually come out?”, September 30, 2026

Does the technician carry parts for the unit?

Some answers told customers to ask whether the company stocks parts for their brand, such as control boards, sensors and drain pumps. They warned that mini-split parts can take longer to get than parts for a standard system. Parts on hand can decide whether the fix happens on the first visit.

10% of the answers (27 of 261) brought this up.

Ask whether they carry parts for your specific unit in stock, since mini-split parts can take longer to source than standard split systems.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for ductless mini-split repair in Palm Harbor, FL 34683?”, September 28, 2026

Is the technician certified, and is the unit still under warranty?

A few answers told customers with a unit under warranty to check whether the company is an authorized service provider for that brand. Others told customers to ask whether the technician is certified to handle refrigerant. Customers wanted the repair to keep their warranty safe.

9% of the answers (24 of 261) brought this up.

Ask if the technician is certified to handle mini-split refrigerant.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for ductless mini-split repair in Largo, FL?”, October 12, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 43 of the 261 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 38 of its 93, ChatGPT in 5 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 56. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 23 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 13 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 8 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 6 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 4 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, then could not confirm whether anyone could come out soon. A repair page with a working number, real booking hours and the brands served answers what they kept telling customers to call about.

I didn't find phone numbers for any of these, so I can't give you one without making it up.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for ductless mini-split repair in Seminole, FL?”, October 12, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 205 ChatGPT and Claude answers about ductless mini-split repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 100% (205 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 31% (63 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 7% (14 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 1% (3 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (2 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 89% of its 56 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like ductless mini-split repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What should I have ready before calling for mini-split repair?

Answers about this job asked for the unit's brand and model, any error code it shows and what it is doing, such as leaking water or not cooling. These details help a company say whether it works on that unit and which parts to bring.

Will a company repair a mini-split it did not install?

Some will and some only service the brands they sell. Assistants regularly told customers to ask about their brand before booking. A repair company's page should say which brands it services and whether it repairs units another company installed.

Does the diagnostic fee go toward the mini-split repair?

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 261 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for ductless mini-split repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
