Who AI assistants recommend for emergency roof tarping
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for emergency roof tarping recommendations 270 times. Here is what they needed to see on a roofer’s page before naming it to tarp a roof in an emergency.
The short answer
Before naming a company to tarp a roof, assistants first needed to know a crew could arrive tonight or first thing tomorrow, and that the company tarps roofs at all. Then they looked for photos for the insurer, a firm price, how the tarp is secured and what happens next.

What people actually asked
We asked for emergency roof tarping in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 270 answers it produced between September 4 and October 10, 2026:
- “I need emergency roof tarping first thing tomorrow — I'm in 33781. Who can actually come out?”96 answers, asked with five different timings: first thing tomorrow, tonight, within the next few hours, tomorrow morning and today
- “Emergency roof tarping near me — I'm in 33755. Who do you recommend?”95 answers
- “Who should I call for emergency roof tarping in 33713?”79 answers
Together, the 270 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Clearwater and Seminole. Each town came up in 33 to 34 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 87 and Google AI Mode 71.
Customers also call it “emergency roof tarp”, “temporary roof tarp” or “emergency roofing”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“What does temporary roof protection include and what happens next?” Temporary protection and a permanent repair are different services with different limitations.
What your emergency roof tarping page has to explain
An emergency tarp is a different service from a roof repair. It stops water for now and buys time for the claim and the permanent fix. Assistants told customers to ask whether a company would tarp without requiring a full replacement contract, and whether it could later handle or refer the repair. A page that describes the tarp visit on its own, and then the next step, lets the customer book exactly what they need tonight.
Many listings did not say whether a company tarped roofs. Assistants found restoration firms, call centers and lead-selling pages mixed in with roofers. They told customers to ask whether the company's own crew does the tarping and who would actually be on the roof. A roofer that names emergency tarping as a service, with its own crew, stands apart from that list.
Time is the whole job. Customers asked who could come tonight or at dawn, and assistants could almost never confirm it. They sent customers to call several companies at once and ask for a firm arrival window. A page that says when crews are on call, how fast they usually arrive and which towns they reach overnight answers the question every one of these customers had.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 270 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for emergency roof tarping, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Will the crew photograph the roof for the insurer?
Many answers told customers to ask whether the crew photographs the roof before and after tarping, and gives an invoice for the insurer. Assistants said tarping costs are often reimbursed, so the record matters. Customers wanted that paperwork from the same visit.
39% of the answers (105 of 270) brought this up.
Ask whether they'll photograph the roof before and after tarping, and don't pay in full up front.
Can a crew get here tonight or first thing tomorrow?
Assistants could rarely confirm that any company had a crew free tonight or tomorrow morning. Answers told customers to call several companies and ask for a firm arrival window before paying a deposit. A stated response time is what customers were trying to find.
23% of the answers (63 of 270) brought this up.
I haven't been able to confirm that any of them has a crew free tomorrow morning, so call two or three now and ask for a firm arrival window.
How is the tarp secured?
Assistants told customers to ask how the tarp would be fastened and how long it should hold. Some asked whether it would be battened down or just stapled. A tarp that blows off in the next storm leaves the customer where they started.
17% of the answers (46 of 270) brought this up.
Ask for the total price, whether they’re licensed and insured, how they’ll secure the tarp, and whether they provide photos/invoices for your insurance claim.
What happens after the tarp goes on?
Assistants kept the tarp and the permanent repair apart. They told customers to ask whether a company would tarp without a full replacement contract, and whether it could do or refer the later repair. Customers wanted the emergency visit to stand on its own.
16% of the answers (44 of 270) brought this up.
Ask whether they tarp your type of roof and whether they can later refer you to a roofer for the permanent repair.
What does the tarp cost, and does it count toward the repair?
Answers told customers to get the total tarp price in writing before the crew started, along with any emergency fee or minimum charge. Some asked whether the price is credited toward a permanent repair. Customers did not want a surprise bill at a stressful moment.
14% of the answers (39 of 270) brought this up.
Ask for a flat tarping price up front, and whether it's credited toward a permanent repair if you hire them for it.
Does this company's own crew do the tarping?
Assistants found call centers and lead-selling pages that passed requests to someone else. They also found restoration companies whose tarping might be subcontracted. Answers told customers to ask who would actually be on the roof.
9% of the answers (25 of 270) brought this up.
It may be a call center, so ask who would actually be on your roof.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 42 of the 270 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 39 of its 87, ChatGPT in 2 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 1 of its 71. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 25 answers
- When the company could do the work: 24 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 6 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 3 answers
Availability was the gap assistants reported most for this job, followed by phone numbers. Many listings also did not say whether the company tarped roofs or took after-hours calls.
Their listings don't say they offer emergency tarping, so ask when you call.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 199 ChatGPT and Claude answers about emergency roof tarping, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 100% (199 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 9% (17 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 3% (6 answers)
- An official license lookup: 1% (2 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 66% of its 71 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.
The checks behind every recommendation, applied to emergency roof tarping
Can you come out when the customer needs you?
Assistants could almost never confirm a crew was free tonight or tomorrow morning. Some listings showed hours with no mention of after-hours service.
24 of the 270 answers about emergency roof tarping, 23 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 185 of the 657 conversations where it came up.
Can the customer reach a person?
A missing phone number was among the gaps assistants reported most. Some distrusted toll-free or out-of-state numbers and told customers to ask whether a local crew would come.
25 of the 270 answers about emergency roof tarping, 25 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.
Do you serve the customer’s town or ZIP code?
For a tarp, coverage means reaching the customer's address tonight. Assistants often could not confirm a company served the customer's ZIP code and ruled out some based too far away.
6 of the 270 answers about emergency roof tarping, 6 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 350 of the 554 conversations where it came up.

Your emergency roof tarping page checklist
Work through this list on your emergency roof tarping page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.
- Use “emergency roof tarping”, “emergency roof tarp” or “temporary roof tarp” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
- Say that you photograph the roof before and after the tarp and give an itemized invoice for the insurance claim.
- Say when your tarp crews are on call, including nights and weekends, and how soon they usually arrive.
- Describe in plain words how your crews secure a tarp and how long it is meant to last.
- Explain that the tarp is a separate visit, how long it is meant to last, and how the permanent repair is assessed afterward.
- Give a flat tarp price or a starting price, any after-hours fee, and whether it is credited toward a repair.
- Say that your own crew does the tarping, and name the company that will arrive.
- State your emergency hours and the usual arrival window for a tarp call.
- Put a local emergency phone number on the tarping page, answered after hours.
- List the towns and ZIP codes your tarp crews reach overnight.
Going further: let assistants see real openings
For an urgent job, “open now” doesn’t answer the customer’s real question: can the right technician get to this address within the next few hours?
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
Is an emergency roof tarp the same as a roof repair?
No. Assistants treated the tarp as temporary protection and the repair as a separate job. They told customers to ask whether a company would tarp without a replacement contract. A roofer's page should explain what the tarp does and how the repair follows.
Will my insurance pay for an emergency roof tarp?
Many answers said tarping costs are often reimbursed, but told customers to check their own policy. They advised photos before and after tarping and an itemized invoice. The page should say what documents the crew provides, without promising what insurance will pay.
How fast can someone tarp my roof?
Assistants could rarely confirm any arrival time and told customers to call several companies for a firm window. Customers asked about tonight and first thing tomorrow. A roofer's page should state its emergency hours and usual response time.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 10, 2026, they answered 270 questions about emergency roof tarping: ChatGPT 112, Claude 87, Google AI Mode 71.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 270 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 10, 2026. We asked for emergency roof tarping in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
