Who AI assistants recommend for evaporative cooler service

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for evaporative cooler service recommendations 254 times. Here is what they needed to see on an HVAC company's page before naming it to work on a swamp cooler.

The short answer

Assistants could rarely find a company that said it works on evaporative coolers, so most answers told customers to call and ask. They looked for an explicit statement, the cooler parts serviced, the unit types handled, and honest advice on whether the cooler suits the climate.

What people actually asked

We asked for evaporative cooler service in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 254 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Looking for someone to do evaporative cooler service in Seminole, FL in two weeks. Any recommendations?”96 answers, asked with five different timings: in the next few weeks, in two weeks, sometime this month, before the end of the month and next month
  • “Evaporative cooler service near me — I'm in 33755. Who do you recommend?”79 answers
  • “Who should I call for evaporative cooler service in 34698?”79 answers

Together, the 254 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and Palm Harbor. Each town came up in 30 to 32 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 78 and Google AI Mode 64.

Customers also call it “swamp cooler repair”, “swamp cooler installation” or “evaporative cooling”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Do you service this evaporative cooler in my area?” This is a specific equipment service; a broad air-conditioning label does not establish that capability or local demand.

What your evaporative cooler service page has to explain

Most HVAC companies here list air conditioning, and assistants did not treat that as proof of swamp cooler work. Answers kept saying a listing did not mention evaporative coolers, so the customer would have to ask. Many ended with a list of general HVAC shops to call rather than a recommendation. One clear sentence naming evaporative cooler service would set a company apart.

Assistants also checked what the customer actually owned. Several asked whether the unit was a true evaporative cooler or a standard central AC system. Others told customers to say whether it was a portable, window or roof-mounted unit. A page that names the cooler types it handles, and says how to tell them apart, saves a wasted visit.

Many answers noted that evaporative coolers work poorly in humid weather. Customers were told to ask whether a repair was worth it, or whether a conventional AC or mini-split would serve them better. A company that offers that honest comparison, along with the service itself, answers the question assistants kept raising.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 254 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for evaporative cooler service, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Does the company actually work on evaporative coolers?

This was the question that decided most answers. Assistants regularly found HVAC companies whose listings never mentioned evaporative coolers, and told customers to ask before booking. Without a clear statement, a company stayed a maybe.

54% of the answers (136 of 254) brought this up.

Ask whether they have actually serviced evaporative coolers, not just central AC.

— Claude, asked “Evaporative cooler service near me — I'm in Tarpon Springs, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 8, 2026

Will the cooler work well in this climate?

Many answers pointed out that evaporative coolers depend on dry air and struggle in humid weather. That is one reason assistants found so few local specialists. Customers were told to ask whether the visit would include an honest look at how well the cooler can work.

34% of the answers (87 of 254) brought this up.

These coolers are rare in Florida's humid climate, so it's worth asking about them before you book.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for evaporative cooler service in St. Petersburg, FL 33713?”, September 30, 2026

Which parts of the cooler does the service cover?

Answers told customers to ask whether the company handles the pads, pump, float valve, water line, belt and motor. Some said a confident answer to that list shows the technician really knows these units. Mineral buildup and cleaning also came up.

33% of the answers (83 of 254) brought this up.

Ask whether they can do evaporative cooler pads, pump/float checks, water line inspection, belt/motor service, and mineral scale cleaning.

— ChatGPT, asked “Looking for someone to do evaporative cooler service in 33755 in the next few weeks. Any recommendations?”, September 4, 2026

Which kinds of cooler does the company handle?

Assistants told customers to give the make and model and say whether the cooler is portable, window or roof-mounted. Some noted that many HVAC shops will not work on portable or window units. Customers wanted to know their type was covered before calling.

30% of the answers (76 of 254) brought this up.

Is repair worth it, or would a different system serve better?

Some answers told customers to get a quote on a standard AC or mini-split too, especially for an older cooler needing a big repair. They wanted the customer to compare before paying for the repair.

21% of the answers (54 of 254) brought this up.

Ask for a quote on a standard AC or mini-split too.

— Claude, asked “Evaporative cooler service near me — I'm in Tarpon Springs, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 8, 2026

What does the service call cost?

Answers told customers to confirm the diagnostic or service-call fee before booking. Because few local companies do this work, some suggested companies farther away and told customers to ask about a travel charge.

11% of the answers (28 of 254) brought this up.

Ask whether they service your specific evaporative-cooler model and whether there’s a diagnostic fee.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for evaporative cooler service in Seminole, FL?”, October 14, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 52 of the 254 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 48 of its 78, ChatGPT in 3 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 1 of its 64. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 21 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 3 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 3 answers

Assistants most often could not confirm that any company works on evaporative coolers, and many could not find a phone number. A page that names the service, the cooler types and a number to call would answer what they kept sending customers to ask.

These do air conditioning work, but their listings don't mention evaporative coolers.

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 190 ChatGPT and Claude answers about evaporative cooler service, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 97% (184 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 40% (76 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 5% (10 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (1 answer)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 67% of its 64 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Can the customer reach a person?

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find. Some sent customers through a directory's booking form because no direct number appeared.

21 of the 254 answers about evaporative cooler service, 21 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.

Do you serve the customer’s town or ZIP code?

Few local companies offer this work, so assistants widened the search and then could not confirm those companies came to the customer's town. Several told customers to check service areas first.

3 of the 254 answers about evaporative cooler service, 3 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 350 of the 554 conversations where it came up.

What do recent customers say?

Assistants sometimes named a well-reviewed company while noting its listing never mentioned evaporative coolers. Reviews about general AC work did not settle the question for this job.

3 of the 254 answers about evaporative cooler service, 3 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 139 of the 569 conversations where it came up.

Your evaporative cooler service page checklist

Work through this list on your evaporative cooler service page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “evaporative cooler service”, “swamp cooler repair” or “swamp cooler installation” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Say in plain words that you service evaporative or swamp coolers, and add a recent example of one you serviced.
  3. Explain how you advise customers on whether their cooler suits the local climate, and when you would say so.
  4. List the cooler parts you inspect, clean, repair or replace on a standard service visit.
  5. Name the cooler types you work on, residential and commercial, and any you do not.
  6. Say whether you can quote both a cooler repair and a replacement system, so customers can compare on one visit.
  7. State your service-call fee for cooler work and any added charge for addresses farther out.
  8. Put a working phone number on the cooler service page, so customers can ask about their unit before booking.
  9. List the towns and ZIP codes where you will travel for evaporative cooler work.
  10. Link to recent reviews and point to any from customers whose cooler you serviced.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like evaporative cooler service, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

Do HVAC companies service evaporative coolers?

Some do, but assistants often could not tell which ones from their listings. Most answers told customers to ask directly whether a company works on evaporative coolers, not only central AC. A page that says so plainly answers that question before the call.

What does an evaporative cooler service visit include?

Answers most often mentioned the pads, pump, float valve, water line, belt and motor, plus cleaning mineral buildup. Visits differ by company, so the page should list which of these a standard visit covers and which cost extra.

Is it worth repairing a swamp cooler or switching to AC?

Assistants told customers with an older cooler or a big repair to ask whether a conventional AC or mini-split would serve them better, especially in humid weather. A page should say whether the company quotes both options so customers can compare.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 14, 2026, they answered 254 questions about evaporative cooler service: ChatGPT 112, Claude 78, Google AI Mode 64.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 254 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for evaporative cooler service in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
