Who AI assistants recommend for an outdoor weatherproof outlet
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for an outdoor weatherproof outlet recommendations 285 times. Here is what they needed to see on an electrician’s page before naming it for an outdoor outlet.
The short answer
Before naming an electrician for an outdoor outlet, assistants needed proof the company takes this small job at all. Then they told customers to ask for a GFCI outlet with an in-use cover, whether a permit is needed, and whether the quote covers new wiring.

What people actually asked
We asked for an outdoor weatherproof outlet in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 285 answers it produced between September 5 and October 12, 2026:
- “Looking for someone to do exterior/weatherproof outlet installation in 34689 in two weeks. Any recommendations?”96 answers, asked with five different timings: in two weeks, next month, in the next few weeks, before the end of the month and sometime this month
- “Who should I call for exterior/weatherproof outlet installation in Clearwater, FL?”95 answers
- “Exterior/weatherproof outlet installation near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL 34683. Who do you recommend?”94 answers
Together, the 285 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Seminole, Tarpon Springs, Largo, Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg. Each town came up in 35 to 36 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 93 and Google AI Mode 72.
Customers also call it “outdoor outlet installation”, “patio/garage outlet install” or “GFCI weatherproof outlet”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Can you add an outdoor outlet where I need to use equipment?” The location, intended use and suitable installation should be assessed together.
What your exterior/weatherproof outlet installation page has to explain
Many electricians list lighting, panels and repairs, but never say they install outdoor outlets. Assistants often found a licensed company and still could not confirm it did this work or took jobs this small. They sent customers to call and ask. A page that names the job, and says small single-outlet jobs are welcome, settles that question before the call.
Assistants told customers to ask for the same parts almost every time: a weather-resistant GFCI outlet, an outdoor-rated box and an in-use cover that stays closed with a cord plugged in. Customers repeated that list back to the electrician to get an accurate quote. A page that names these parts shows the company already knows what the customer will ask for.
The answers split the job in two. Replacing an existing outdoor outlet is quick. Adding a new one may need a new wire run, a new circuit and a permit. Customers could not tell which price applied to them. The page should explain how the location, the equipment it will power and the route from the panel change the scope and price.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 285 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for an outdoor weatherproof outlet, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Will it have GFCI protection and an in-use cover?
Most answers told customers to ask for a weather-resistant GFCI outlet with an in-use cover, not a flip lid. Customers used that list to make sure every quote priced the same parts.
55% of the answers (158 of 285) brought this up.
Ask for a weather-resistant GFCI receptacle, an in-use weatherproof cover, and whether a permit is required.
Is it a new circuit or an extension of an existing one?
Answers told customers to ask whether the electrician would extend a nearby circuit or run a new one from the panel. That choice decided both the price and whether a permit applied.
34% of the answers (98 of 285) brought this up.
Ask whether they'll run a new circuit or tap an existing one.
Does the job need a permit, and who pulls it?
Assistants regularly told customers to ask whether a permit is needed and whether the electrician pulls it. Many said a brand-new outdoor outlet often needs one, while a replacement may not.
31% of the answers (87 of 285) brought this up.
Ask whether they pull the permit and schedule the inspection.
Does the electrician take this job at all?
Assistants often found an electrician whose page listed lighting or panels but said nothing about outdoor outlets. They could not confirm the company did this work, so they told customers to ask first.
16% of the answers (47 of 285) brought this up.
I couldn't confirm that any of these businesses does exterior outlet work specifically, so ask each one that before you book.
Where is the outlet going and what will it power?
Answers asked where the outlet would go and what would plug into it, such as patio lights, a pressure washer or pool equipment. Some told customers near the water to ask about corrosion-resistant parts, and to send a photo for a quote.
16% of the answers (47 of 285) brought this up.
Ask for a fixed quote over the phone/text with a photo of the install location — most of these do free estimates.
What does the quote include?
Assistants told customers to ask for a flat written price and to check what it covers: the outlet, the cover, the wire run, the permit and patching the wall. Few electricians showed any of this on their pages.
4% of the answers (10 of 285) brought this up.
Ask whether the price is flat or hourly, and whether it includes the cover, the GFCI device and wall patching.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 46 of the 285 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 46 of its 93, ChatGPT in 0 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 26 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 13 answers
- Reviews it could check: 6 answers
- A price or how the job is priced: 6 answers
- When the company could do the work: 5 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 4 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm the company did outdoor outlets at all. A page that names this job, lists a working number and shows the license answers what they kept telling customers to call about.
I couldn't confirm their phone numbers, so use the contact info on their sites.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 213 ChatGPT and Claude answers about an outdoor weatherproof outlet, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 92% (197 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 65% (139 answers)
- An official license lookup: 8% (18 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 4% (8 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: 1% (3 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 86% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

- Use “exterior/weatherproof outlet installation”, “outdoor outlet installation” or “patio/garage outlet install” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
- Name the outlet type, the box and the in-use cover that come with every outdoor outlet you install.
- Describe how you decide between extending a circuit and running a new one, and how each changes the quote.
- Explain when this job needs a permit in the towns you serve, and say that you pull it and book the inspection.
- Give outdoor outlets their own page and say plainly that single-outlet jobs are welcome.
- Show real outdoor outlet jobs with the location and the equipment named, and say whether a photo is enough for a quote.
- List what a standard outdoor outlet quote includes and what can add to it, such as a long wire run or wall repair.
- Put a working phone number for regular bookings on the outdoor outlet page itself.
- Show your electrical license number with a link to the state lookup, and say what insurance you carry.
- Link to recent reviews and point to ones that mention outdoor outlets or similar small jobs.
Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like an outdoor weatherproof outlet, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
What kind of outdoor outlet should I ask an electrician for?
Assistants most often told customers to ask for a weather-resistant GFCI outlet, an outdoor-rated box and an in-use cover that stays closed with something plugged in. An electrician's page that names these parts helps customers compare quotes on the same terms.
Does adding an outdoor outlet need a permit?
Answers said it depends on the scope. Replacing an existing outlet often does not, while adding a new outlet or a new circuit often does. Assistants told customers to ask whether the electrician pulls the permit, so the page should explain when one applies.
Why does a new outdoor outlet cost more than a replacement?
Answers explained that a new outlet may need wire run through the wall, a new circuit from the panel, a permit and wall patching. A replacement uses the wiring already there. The page should show which of these the quote covers.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 5 and October 12, 2026, they answered 285 questions about an outdoor weatherproof outlet: ChatGPT 120, Claude 93, Google AI Mode 72.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 285 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 5 and October 12, 2026. We asked for an outdoor weatherproof outlet in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
