How AI assistants choose who to recommend for faucet installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for faucet installation recommendations 253 times. Here is what they needed to see on a plumber's page before naming it to put in a new faucet.

The short answer

Before naming a plumber for a faucet installation, assistants wanted to know whether it would fit a faucet the customer already bought. Then they looked for what the price covers: new supply lines and shutoff valves, removing the old faucet, a flat price and a labor warranty.

What people actually asked

We asked for faucet installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 253 answers it produced between September 5 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Faucet installation near me — I'm in 34683. Who do you recommend?”88 answers
  • “Who should I call for faucet installation in Seminole, FL?”85 answers
  • “Looking for someone to do faucet installation in 34689 in the next few weeks. Any recommendations?”80 answers, asked with five different timings: in two weeks, before the end of the month, in the next few weeks, sometime this month and next month

Together, the 253 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Clearwater, Dunedin and Largo. Each town came up in 31 to 32 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 104, Claude 77 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “faucet replacement” or “new faucet install”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Can you install the faucet I have already bought?” Customer-supplied and plumber-supplied fixtures need different responsibility and warranty explanations.

What your faucet installation page has to explain

Many customers had already picked out a faucet, so the first question was whether the plumber would install it. Assistants often told customers to ask whether a company installs customer-bought faucets or only ones it supplies. Some noted that buying the faucet yourself can cost less. A page that answers this in its first lines settles the question most customers would call about.

The answers treated the faucet as only part of the job. Assistants kept naming supply lines and the shutoff valves under the sink, and told customers to ask whether replacing them is included or extra. Some mentioned corroded fittings or a hard-to-reach spot under the counter. The page should say what is checked and replaced as a rule, and how anything else is quoted.

Who supplied the faucet also changed what the warranty covered. One answer noted that a plumber's warranty may not apply to parts the customer bought. Assistants told customers to ask whether labor is warrantied either way. The page should explain the warranty for a plumber-supplied faucet and a customer-bought one separately, so neither customer is surprised later.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 253 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for faucet installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Are new supply lines and shutoff valves included?

Most answers told customers to ask whether new supply lines and shutoff valves are part of the price. Several said old ones often need replacing at the same time, so customers wanted to know if that costs extra.

47% of the answers (118 of 253) brought this up.

Ask whether the price includes new shutoff valves and supply lines, because old ones often need replacing.

— Claude, asked “Looking for someone to do faucet installation in Largo, FL in two weeks. Any recommendations?”, October 1, 2026

Will the plumber install a faucet the customer bought?

Assistants often told customers to ask whether a plumber installs a faucet they already bought or only ones it supplies. Many answers also asked the customer which of the two they wanted, because the price and scope differ.

39% of the answers (98 of 253) brought this up.

Ask if they'll install a faucet you bought yourself, or whether they only install ones they supply.

— Claude, asked “Faucet installation near me — I'm in Largo, FL. Who do you recommend?”, September 30, 2026

Is the install a flat price or billed by the hour?

Many answers told customers to ask for a flat price for a standard faucet swap rather than an hourly rate. A flat price, with its contents named, is how customers compared one plumber with another.

23% of the answers (58 of 253) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote is a flat rate or hourly.

— Claude, asked “Looking for someone to do faucet installation in Dunedin, FL 34698 in the next few weeks. Any recommendations?”, October 1, 2026

Is removing the old faucet part of the job?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the quote covers taking out the old faucet and hauling it away. Some also mentioned leak testing after the new one is connected.

22% of the answers (55 of 253) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote includes removing the old faucet, connecting supply lines, checking shutoff valves, and hauling away the old fixture.

— ChatGPT, asked “Looking for someone to do faucet installation in Pinellas Park, FL 33781 in the next few weeks. Any recommendations?”, September 10, 2026

Is the labor warrantied, even on a customer-bought faucet?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the plumber warranties the labor. One answer noted that customer-supplied parts may not qualify for a plumber's warranty, so customers needed that spelled out.

20% of the answers (51 of 253) brought this up.

Ask for a flat quote for “installing a customer-supplied faucet” and whether they warranty labor.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for faucet installation in Largo, FL?”, September 15, 2026

What if the fittings under the sink are corroded or stuck?

Some answers told customers to ask what happens if corroded fittings, stuck valves or tight access under the counter turn up. These were the cases where a simple swap could cost more.

8% of the answers (21 of 253) brought this up.

Ask for the total price—including shutoff-valve replacement, disposal of the old faucet, and any unexpected corrosion—before approving the work.

— ChatGPT, asked “Faucet installation near me — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL 33713. Who do you recommend?”, October 7, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 31 of the 253 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 30 of its 77, ChatGPT in 1 of its 104 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 21 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 7 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 6 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 5 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 4 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 3 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm that a plumber did faucet installs at all. A page that names faucet installation, says whether customer-bought faucets are welcome and shows a number answers both.

I didn't find anyone who advertises faucet installation specifically, so ask each one about it when you call.

— Claude, asked “Looking for someone to do faucet installation in Tarpon Springs, FL 34689 before the end of the month. Any recommendations?”, October 8, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 181 ChatGPT and Claude answers about faucet installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 95% (172 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 69% (124 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 18% (32 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 4% (7 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 2% (3 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 82% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

The checks behind every recommendation, applied to faucet installation

Can the customer reach a person?

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job. Several told customers to look up a number on the company's own site or listing.

21 of the 253 answers about faucet installation, 21 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.

What do recent customers say?

Assistants often could not find reliable reviews, and some listings had none. Reviews from customers who had a faucet put in speak to this job better than general praise.

7 of the 253 answers about faucet installation, 7 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 139 of the 569 conversations where it came up.

Can you schedule the job when the customer needs it?

Customers often wanted the install on a chosen week, sometimes a month ahead. Assistants could not confirm openings and told customers to ask for the earliest date when they call for a quote.

6 of the 253 answers about faucet installation, 6 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 185 of the 657 conversations where it came up.

Your faucet installation page checklist

Work through this list on your faucet installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “faucet installation”, “faucet replacement” or “new faucet install” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. List whether supply lines come with every install, and how shutoff valve replacement is priced when it is needed.
  3. Say plainly whether you install customer-bought faucets, and how that price differs from one where you supply the faucet.
  4. State whether a standard faucet install is a flat price, and whether that price is labor only.
  5. Describe each step of a standard install, from removing the old faucet to testing the new one for leaks.
  6. Explain what your warranty covers when you supply the faucet and when the customer does.
  7. Say how you check fittings and access before the job, and how extra work is quoted and approved.
  8. Put a working phone number on the faucet installation page, and let customers send the faucet model.
  9. Link to recent reviews and point to ones that mention a faucet installation.
  10. Say how far ahead faucet installs are usually booked and how the customer picks a day.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like faucet installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

Can I buy my own faucet and have a plumber install it?

Some plumbers do and some only install faucets they supply, and assistants often could not tell which from a page. They told customers to ask whether a plumber installs customer-bought faucets and whether the warranty still covers the labor. A page should answer both questions directly.

What does a faucet installation price usually cover?

Answers most often named removing the old faucet, new supply lines, checking or replacing shutoff valves and testing for leaks. Some added haul-away and a trip fee. A page should list which of these are always included and which are priced only when needed.

Should the shutoff valves be replaced with a new faucet?

Several answers said old shutoff valves and supply lines often need replacing at the same time. Assistants told customers to ask whether that is included or extra. The page should explain how the plumber checks them and how replacement is priced.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 5 and October 14, 2026, they answered 253 questions about faucet installation: ChatGPT 104, Claude 77, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 253 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 5 and October 14, 2026. We asked for faucet installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
