How AI assistants choose who to recommend for flat-roof repair
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for flat-roof repair recommendations 253 times. Here is what they needed to see on a roofer’s page before naming it for a flat-roof repair.
The short answer
Before naming a roofer for a flat-roof repair, assistants wanted to know which flat-roof systems it actually repairs, such as TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen or built-up. Then they looked for whether it takes small repairs, offers a temporary patch first, and finds the cause of the leak.

What people actually asked
We asked for flat-roof repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 253 answers it produced between September 4 and October 10, 2026:
- “Flat-roof repair near me — I'm in Seminole, FL 33772. Who do you recommend?”93 answers
- “I need flat-roof repair first thing tomorrow — I'm in 33781. Who can actually come out?”88 answers, asked with five different timings: first thing tomorrow, tomorrow morning, within the next few hours, today and tonight
- “Who should I call for flat-roof repair in 34698?”72 answers
Together, the 253 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Dunedin, Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 31 to 32 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 93 and Google AI Mode 48.
Customers also call it “low-slope roof repair”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Do you service the roof system already on this property?” The existing system and assessed issue should guide the repair description, not the label flat roof alone.
What your flat-roof repair page has to explain
A flat roof is not one thing. Assistants kept telling customers to name their membrane and ask whether the roofer has repaired that exact system recently, because the repair method differs. A page that only says flat roofs left them unsure. Naming each system the crew repairs, with a recent example of each, answers the first question customers were told to ask.
Many roofers list flat roofs under replacement, not repair. Answers often flagged a listing that mentioned only installation and told the customer to ask whether the company takes repair jobs at all. Others warned that the first visit might be a patch or a tarp rather than a real fix. The page has to say which kind of visit the customer is booking.
Flat roofs usually leak for a reason the patch does not touch. Answers told customers to ask about drainage, ponding water and wet insulation under the repair, and whether the roofer would repair, recoat or replace. A page that explains how the crew finds the source, and how it decides between those options, shows the customer what the diagnosis is worth.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 253 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for flat-roof repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Which flat-roof systems does the roofer repair?
Assistants regularly told customers to find out whether their roof is TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen or built-up, then ask whether the roofer repairs that type. Many pages said flat roofs without naming any system, so answers could not match the roofer to the roof.
62% of the answers (156 of 253) brought this up.
Ask whether they've done repairs on your type of flat roof.
Is the first visit a temporary patch or a full repair?
Answers about leaking flat roofs often told customers to ask for a tarp or temporary patch now and a proper repair later. They also warned customers to ask which one a quoted visit actually is, so the price is not mistaken for a finished fix.
47% of the answers (118 of 253) brought this up.
Ask if the first visit is a temporary fix, such as a patch or tarp, or a full repair.
Is the scope written down with photos?
Many answers told customers to get the scope and price in writing before work starts, with photos of the damaged area. Flat-roof damage is hard for a homeowner to see, so the photos are how the customer checks what is being fixed.
26% of the answers (67 of 253) brought this up.
Ask for the scope and price in writing, with photos.
Will the roofer find the cause of the leak?
Answers told customers to ask whether the roofer will check drainage, ponding water and wet insulation, not just coat the wet spot. Customers wanted a repair that stops the leak, so how the crew finds the cause shapes the choice.
20% of the answers (50 of 253) brought this up.
Ask for licensing, insurance, a written estimate, and whether the repair includes locating the underlying leak source.
Is the repair under warranty?
Assistants often told customers to ask whether the repair will be warranted, on both the work and the materials. A patch with no warranty left customers unsure what would happen if the same spot leaked again.
11% of the answers (28 of 253) brought this up.
Ask for a roof inspection, whether the repair will be warranted, and proof of current Florida licensing and insurance.
Repair, recoat or replace?
Assistants told customers to ask each roofer whether it would repair the roof, recoat it or replace it. Customers with a small leak wanted to know a roofer would not push a full replacement it did not need.
4% of the answers (11 of 253) brought this up.
Ask whether they'd repair it or recommend coating or replacing it.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 43 of the 253 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 40 of its 93, ChatGPT in 3 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 48. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 25 answers
- When the company could do the work: 16 answers
- Reviews it could check: 9 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and often could not confirm a roofer handles flat roofs at all. A page that names the flat-roof systems the crew repairs, next to a working number, answers both.
I didn't see anything about flat-roof specialty or weekend hours for either.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 205 ChatGPT and Claude answers about flat-roof repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 95% (195 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 53% (108 answers)
- An official license lookup: 8% (16 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 3% (7 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (2 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 85% of its 48 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.
The checks behind every recommendation, applied to flat-roof repair
Can the customer reach a person?
Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job. Some found two different numbers for one roofer and told the customer to check which was current.

Your flat-roof repair page checklist
Work through this list on your flat-roof repair page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.
- Use “flat-roof repair” or “low-slope roof repair” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
- List each flat-roof system the crew repairs and show a recent repair on each one.
- Explain when the crew does a temporary patch, what it includes, and how the permanent repair is scheduled afterward.
- Say that every repair comes with a written scope, a price and photos of the problem area before work starts.
- Describe how the crew traces a flat-roof leak and what it checks beyond the visible damage.
- State the warranty on flat-roof repairs, what it covers and for how long, and how a temporary patch differs.
- Explain how the crew decides between a repair, a coating and a replacement, with an example of each.
- Put one working phone number on the flat-roof repair page and keep it the same on every listing.
- Say how soon a crew can usually reach a leaking flat roof, and how after-hours or weekend calls are handled.
- Link to recent reviews and point to ones from customers who had a flat roof repaired.
Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like flat-roof repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
What should a flat-roof repair page say?
Answers about this job most often wanted the flat-roof systems the roofer repairs, such as TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen or built-up. They also looked for whether the company takes small repairs, whether a first visit is a temporary patch, and how the crew finds the cause of a leak.
Is a temporary patch the same as a flat-roof repair?
No. Assistants told customers to ask whether a first visit would be a tarp or temporary patch, or a full repair, and what each costs. A page should explain when the crew patches first and how the permanent repair follows.
How do customers decide between repairing and recoating a flat roof?
Assistants told customers to ask each roofer whether it would repair, recoat or replace the roof, and why. A page that explains how the crew makes that choice, and shows photos of the problem it found, helps the customer trust the recommendation.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 10, 2026, they answered 253 questions about flat-roof repair: ChatGPT 112, Claude 93, Google AI Mode 48.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 253 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 10, 2026. We asked for flat-roof repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
