How AI assistants choose who to recommend for frozen pipe repair

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for frozen pipe repair recommendations 318 times. Here is what they needed to see before naming a plumber who handles frozen and burst pipes.

The short answer

For frozen pipe repair, assistants first needed to know whether a plumber handles frozen pipes at all, since few local pages mentioned them. Then they looked for an arrival time, the after-hours or trip fee, whether thawing and burst repair are both covered, and who is actually sent.

What people actually asked

We asked for frozen pipe repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 318 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Frozen pipe repair near me — I'm in 33713. Who do you recommend?”111 answers
  • “Who should I call for frozen pipe repair in 33781?”111 answers
  • “I need frozen pipe repair tonight — I'm in Largo, FL. Who can actually come out?”96 answers, asked with five different timings: tonight, first thing tomorrow, within the next few hours, tomorrow morning and today

Together, the 318 answers covered 16 towns in Pinellas County: including Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Seminole and St. Petersburg. Each town came up in 4 to 36 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 136, Claude 110 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “frozen pipe thawing” or “burst frozen pipe repair”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Do you offer frozen-pipe assessment in the area where my property is located?” This service should only be marketed where the business actually offers it; a catalogue entry does not establish local relevance.

What your frozen pipe repair page has to explain

Frozen pipes are rare in this part of Florida, and the answers showed it. Assistants often could not find a single local plumber whose page named frozen pipe repair. They fell back on general emergency plumbers and told customers to ask whether each one handles frozen pipes. A plumber who does this work, and says so for the towns it serves, stands out from a long list of generic emergency pages.

A true freeze is unusual here. Several answers told customers to have the plumber check for other causes too, such as a burst, a failed fitting or a pressure problem. The page should explain what the visit covers: finding the frozen section, thawing it, checking for splits and repairing a burst. It should also say what happens when the cause turns out to be something else.

Most of these questions were urgent. Customers asked who could come tonight or first thing tomorrow, and assistants could not see anyone's schedule. Answers also warned that some numbers reach a call center that sends a partner plumber. A page that names the company doing the work, its after-hours number and its fees answers what customers were told to ask on the phone.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 318 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for frozen pipe repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Is thawing included, or only the burst repair?

Answers told customers to ask whether the plumber thaws the pipe, checks it for splits and repairs a burst in the same visit. Some described a plumber thawing the pipe safely and checking for hidden cracks.

36% of the answers (113 of 318) brought this up.

Ask for the total diagnostic/service-call fee and confirm they handle frozen-pipe thawing and burst-pipe repair.

— ChatGPT, asked “Frozen pipe repair near me — I'm in Largo, FL 33770. Who do you recommend?”, October 11, 2026

What does an after-hours visit cost?

Many answers told customers to ask for the after-hours, trip or dispatch fee before anyone is sent. Some also said to ask whether the price is a flat rate or hourly.

28% of the answers (90 of 318) brought this up.

Ask for a price up front, including any after-hours or trip fee.

— Claude, asked “Frozen pipe repair near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL. Who do you recommend?”, September 20, 2026

Does the plumber handle frozen pipes at all?

Assistants often could not find any local page that named frozen pipe repair. They told customers to ask each emergency plumber whether it handles frozen pipes. A page that names the service, and the towns where it is offered, answers that before the call.

22% of the answers (70 of 318) brought this up.

The other companies advertise emergency plumbing in general, so ask each one whether they handle frozen pipes.

— Claude, asked “I need frozen pipe repair today — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL 33713. Who can actually come out?”, September 21, 2026

Is it really a frozen pipe?

Several answers said true frozen pipes are unusual in this area. They told customers to have the plumber also check for a burst, a failed fitting or a pressure problem.

15% of the answers (49 of 318) brought this up.

When can someone arrive?

Assistants could not see any plumber's live schedule, so they told customers to call and ask for an arrival time. For a pipe that may burst, the arrival time often decided who the customer called first.

13% of the answers (40 of 318) brought this up.

Ask for an arrival window and whether they've handled frozen pipes.

— Claude, asked “I need frozen pipe repair within the next few hours — I'm in 33755. Who can actually come out?”, October 12, 2026

Who will actually come to the door?

Answers warned that some listings are lead pages or call centers that pass the job to a partner plumber. Assistants told customers to ask for the name of the company sending someone, and its license number.

12% of the answers (37 of 318) brought this up.

Some of these numbers may go to a call center that dispatches to a partner plumber, so ask for the company name and a license number.

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 72 of the 318 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 65 of its 110, ChatGPT in 7 of its 136 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 27 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 22 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 11 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 11 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 5 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 3 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and often could not confirm anyone could come tonight or tomorrow morning. Many could not find any plumber that named frozen pipe repair, so naming it is the first thing a page can do.

I didn't find any that specifically advertise frozen-pipe repair, which is rare in Florida.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for frozen pipe repair in Palm Harbor, FL 34683?”, October 10, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 246 ChatGPT and Claude answers about frozen pipe repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 100% (245 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 25% (61 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 2% (6 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 1% (3 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 1% (3 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 83% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

The checks behind every recommendation, applied to frozen pipe repair

Can you come out when the customer needs you?

After phone numbers, this was what assistants most often could not confirm. Listings could not show who had a plumber free tonight or first thing tomorrow, so answers told customers to call more than one company.

22 of the 318 answers about frozen pipe repair, 20 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 185 of the 657 conversations where it came up.

Can the customer reach a person?

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find, and they sent customers to a website instead. For a pipe that may burst, a contact form does little.

27 of the 318 answers about frozen pipe repair, 25 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.

What do recent customers say?

Assistants could rarely check reviews independently and told customers to look at recent Google reviews. Some ratings on listings were self-reported and could not be confirmed.

11 of the 318 answers about frozen pipe repair, 11 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 139 of the 569 conversations where it came up.

Your frozen pipe repair page checklist

Work through this list on your frozen pipe repair page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “frozen pipe repair”, “frozen pipe thawing” or “burst frozen pipe repair” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Describe what a frozen pipe visit includes, from thawing to checking for splits to repairing a burst.
  3. State your after-hours or trip fee, or how it is set, and whether the repair is priced flat or by the hour.
  4. Name frozen and burst pipe repair as a service, and say which towns you offer it in.
  5. Say that the visit also looks for other causes of no water or a leak, and how that work is priced.
  6. Explain how a customer gets a confirmed arrival time, and the hours you can send someone out.
  7. Put your company name, license number and local address on the page, so the customer knows who will arrive.
  8. Say the hours you take frozen pipe calls and how the customer gets an arrival time.
  9. Show one phone number that reaches a person after hours, near the top of the page.
  10. Link to your recent reviews and point to ones from emergency or burst pipe jobs.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For an urgent job, “open now” doesn’t answer the customer’s real question: can the right technician get to this address within the next few hours?

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

Do plumbers in Florida repair frozen pipes?

Some do, but few local pages say so. Assistants often found only general emergency plumbers and told customers to ask each one whether it handles frozen pipes. A plumber who does this work should name frozen and burst pipe repair on its page, with the towns it serves.

What should a frozen pipe repair visit include?

Answers mentioned thawing the frozen section, checking for splits or hidden cracks, and repairing any burst. Some also told customers to have the plumber look for other causes, such as a failed fitting. The page should list what the visit covers and how extra repairs are priced.

How much does an emergency frozen pipe visit cost?

The answers did not give a standard price. Assistants told customers to ask for the after-hours or trip fee, and whether the work is a flat rate or hourly, before anyone is sent. A page that states its fee, or how it is set, answers that question first.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 14, 2026, they answered 318 questions about frozen pipe repair: ChatGPT 136, Claude 110, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 318 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for frozen pipe repair in 16 towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
