Who AI assistants recommend for garbage disposal repair

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for garbage disposal repair recommendations 310 times. Here is what they needed to see on a plumber's page before naming it to fix a broken disposal.

The short answer

Before naming a plumber for garbage disposal repair, assistants wanted to know whether it actually repairs disposals or mostly replaces them. Then they looked for the service-call fee, whether that fee counts toward the work, and a price for repair and for replacement before anything starts.

What people actually asked

We asked for garbage disposal repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 310 answers it produced between September 4 and October 12, 2026:

  • “Looking for someone to do garbage disposal repair in Seminole, FL in the next few weeks. Any recommendations?”104 answers, asked with five different timings: next month, in the next few weeks, in two weeks, before the end of the month and sometime this month
  • “Who should I call for garbage disposal repair in Tarpon Springs, FL?”104 answers
  • “Garbage disposal repair near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL 34683. Who do you recommend?”102 answers

Together, the 310 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin and Palm Harbor. Each town came up in 38 to 39 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 118 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “disposal repair” or “fix garbage disposal”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Can you assess the disposal before proposing a new unit?” Repair, replacement and work on related connections should be quoted distinctly.

What your garbage disposal repair page has to explain

Many plumbers list disposals in a long menu of services and say nothing more. Assistants often could not tell whether a plumber fixes a jammed or leaking unit or simply swaps in a new one. Their usual advice was to call and ask whether the plumber repairs first. A page that says which faults it repairs, and when it recommends a new unit instead, answers that question before the call.

The answers kept returning to one worry: paying a visit fee only to hear the unit should be replaced. Customers were told to ask for the trip or diagnostic fee, whether it is credited toward the repair, and for both a repair and a replacement price. The page has to explain how the plumber decides between the two and what the customer approves before work begins.

Assistants also suggested simple checks a homeowner might try before booking. A plumber's page does not need to teach those. It should say which symptoms are worth a visit, such as a unit that hums but will not turn, leaks underneath or is completely dead. A short example of a real repair, with the fault found and the fix made, shows what the visit delivers.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 310 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for garbage disposal repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Which disposal problems does the plumber fix?

Answers described the problem in the customer's words: a disposal that hums, is jammed, leaks or is completely dead. Assistants used those symptoms to judge whether a visit was needed and what kind of fix to expect.

49% of the answers (153 of 310) brought this up.

Is there a visit fee, and does it count toward the repair?

The visit fee was the price question assistants raised most for this job. They told customers to ask what it is and whether it is waived or credited if the repair goes ahead. Few pages answered either part.

35% of the answers (108 of 310) brought this up.

Ask for the diagnostic or service-call fee up front, and whether it's credited toward the repair.

— Claude, asked “Garbage disposal repair near me — I'm in Clearwater, FL 33755. Who do you recommend?”, September 19, 2026

Will the plumber repair the disposal or push a new one?

Assistants told customers again and again to ask whether a plumber repairs disposals or usually recommends replacement. Some answers added that an old unit with a failed motor is often cheaper to replace. Customers wanted an honest recommendation, not a sale.

32% of the answers (98 of 310) brought this up.

Ask for the diagnostic/trip fee and whether repair or replacement is more economical before authorizing work.

— ChatGPT, asked “Garbage disposal repair near me — I'm in Seminole, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 3, 2026

Does this plumber work on disposals at all?

Assistants often found a plumber whose page or reviews said nothing about disposals. They passed that doubt to the customer as one more thing to ask. Some named a plumber only as a lead because its reviews were about other work.

16% of the answers (49 of 310) brought this up.

Ask whether they repair disposals or only replace them.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for garbage disposal repair in 33772?”, October 9, 2026

Will the customer see a price before work starts?

Answers told customers to get a quote before the plumber starts, often in writing and often for both repair and replacement. A disposal repair can cost close to a new unit, so the customer wants to choose with both numbers in hand.

6% of the answers (18 of 310) brought this up.

Ask for the price to *repair* versus *replace* before they start.

— Claude, asked “Garbage disposal repair near me — I'm in 34698. Who do you recommend?”, September 19, 2026

Can a replacement happen on the same visit?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the plumber carries common disposals on the truck and whether it will install a unit the customer buys. When repair is not worth it, customers wanted to avoid a second visit.

4% of the answers (12 of 310) brought this up.

Ask whether they charge a dispatch/diagnostic fee, whether that fee applies toward repair/replacement, and whether they install a customer-supplied disposal if yours needs replacing.

— ChatGPT, asked “Looking for someone to do garbage disposal repair in 33713 in two weeks. Any recommendations?”, September 27, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 42 of the 310 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 40 of its 118, ChatGPT in 0 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 2 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 25 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 14 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 5 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 5 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 4 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number for a plumber, and often could not confirm that it repairs disposals at all. A page that names disposal repair, shows the visit fee and lists a working number answers what they kept sending customers to ask.

Its listing doesn't mention disposals, so ask whether they do them.

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 238 ChatGPT and Claude answers about garbage disposal repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 99% (236 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 57% (136 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 5% (12 answers)
  • An official license lookup: under 1% (2 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 62% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

The checks behind every recommendation, applied to garbage disposal repair

Can the customer reach a person?

Phone numbers were the thing assistants most often could not find for this job. Several answers left numbers out and told customers to look them up elsewhere.

25 of the 310 answers about garbage disposal repair, 25 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.

What do recent customers say?

Assistants often could not verify reviews, and some found reviews only about other plumbing work. Reviews that mention a fixed disposal speak to this job directly.

14 of the 310 answers about garbage disposal repair, 14 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 139 of the 569 conversations where it came up.

Do you serve the customer’s town or ZIP code?

For a disposal repair, coverage means reaching the customer's kitchen without a long wait or a travel charge. Assistants sometimes could not confirm that a plumber served the customer's town or ZIP code.

5 of the 310 answers about garbage disposal repair, 5 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 350 of the 554 conversations where it came up.

Your garbage disposal repair page checklist

Work through this list on your garbage disposal repair page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “garbage disposal repair”, “disposal repair” or “fix garbage disposal” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. List the common symptoms you repair, and give one real example with the fault you found and the fix you made.
  3. State the service-call fee and whether it is credited toward the repair when the customer approves the work.
  4. Say plainly that you assess the unit first, and explain when you recommend repair and when you recommend a new disposal.
  5. Give disposal repair its own page or section that names the job and the faults you fix.
  6. Explain that the customer gets a repair price and a replacement price to approve before any work begins.
  7. Say whether you carry replacement units, and whether you will install one the customer already owns.
  8. Put a working phone number and a short booking form on the disposal repair page itself.
  9. Link to your recent reviews and point to ones from customers whose disposal you repaired.
  10. List the towns and ZIP codes where you do disposal repairs, and say whether any of them carry a travel fee.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like garbage disposal repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

Should a garbage disposal be repaired or replaced?

Assistants told customers to ask a plumber for both a repair price and a replacement price. Answers noted that an older unit with a worn motor is often cheaper to replace, while a jam or a loose connection can usually be fixed. The page should explain how the plumber makes that call.

What does a plumber charge to come look at a disposal?

Most answers said to ask for the trip or diagnostic fee before booking, and whether it is credited toward the repair. Few pages listed it. A page that states the fee and when it is waived answers the question customers were told to ask first.

Can a plumber install a new disposal on the same visit?

Answers told customers to ask whether the plumber carries replacement disposals on the truck, and whether it will install one the customer bought. A page that says so helps a customer avoid paying for two visits when repair is not worth it.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 12, 2026, they answered 310 questions about garbage disposal repair: ChatGPT 120, Claude 118, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 310 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 12, 2026. We asked for garbage disposal repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
