Who AI assistants recommend for gas line installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for gas line installation recommendations 261 times. Here is what they needed to see on a contractor's page before naming it to run a new gas line.

The short answer

Before naming a contractor for a gas line installation, assistants wanted proof it is licensed for gas work and pulls the permit. Then they looked for a pressure test, the inspection, coordination with the gas utility and a written quote that names every part of the job.

What people actually asked

We asked for gas line installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 261 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Who should I call for gas line installation in 33772?”96 answers
  • “I'm looking to get gas line installation done in 33713 in the next few weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”88 answers, asked with five different timings: before the end of the month, in two weeks, in the next few weeks, next month and sometime this month
  • “Gas line installation near me — I'm in 34689. Who do you recommend?”77 answers

Together, the 261 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Clearwater and Palm Harbor. Each town came up in 31 to 33 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 93 and Google AI Mode 56.

Customers also call it “gas line repair”, “gas piping” or “gas line for appliance hookup”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“What information is needed to quote a gas-line installation?” An appliance connection and a larger new line are different scopes; avoid giving installation instructions in marketing copy.

What your gas line installation page has to explain

Gas work raised more licensing questions than most plumbing jobs. Assistants told customers to ask for a Florida gas or plumbing contractor license number and check it on the state lookup. They often found general plumbers, HVAC companies and leak repair shops and could not tell which of them runs new gas lines. A page that names the license, the job and the fuels handled answers that first.

Answers treated the permit and inspection as part of the job, not an extra. Customers were told to ask who pulls the permit, who schedules the inspection and whether the line is pressure-tested before use. The page should say who confirms the requirements and handles each approval, without explaining how to do the work itself.

A hookup for one appliance and a long new line are different jobs. Assistants told customers to describe the appliance and the route, and to ask whether the quote covers trenching, wall repair, appliance connections and work with the gas utility. A completed project with its actual scope shows what a quote from this contractor includes.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 261 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for gas line installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection?

The permit and inspection came up more than anything else for this job. Assistants told customers to ask whether the contractor pulls the permit and arranges the inspection, and whether both are in the quote.

58% of the answers (152 of 261) brought this up.

Ask who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for gas line installation in Largo, FL?”, September 21, 2026

Is the line pressure-tested before it goes into service?

Many answers told customers to ask whether the contractor pressure-tests the line and whether that is in the price. Customers wanted proof the line was checked before the gas was turned on.

49% of the answers (128 of 261) brought this up.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for gas line installation in Dunedin, FL 34698?”, October 12, 2026

Will the contractor work with the gas utility?

Answers told customers to check whether natural gas reaches their street and to ask whether the contractor coordinates with the utility for the meter and turn-on. Some said that step adds lead time.

45% of the answers (118 of 261) brought this up.

Ask whether they coordinate directly with the gas utility for the meter set/turn-on, since that step commonly adds lead time beyond the install itself.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get gas line installation done in 33713 in two weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”, September 23, 2026

Does this company run new gas lines?

Assistants often found plumbers whose listings mentioned water heaters, drains or leak repair, with nothing about new gas lines. They told customers to ask whether the company takes standalone gas line jobs.

37% of the answers (97 of 261) brought this up.

Ask whether they handle permitted gas line installs, not just plumbing repairs.

— ChatGPT, asked “I'm looking to get gas line installation done in 34698 next month. Who should I get quotes from?”, September 16, 2026

What does the quote cover beyond the pipe?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the quote includes trenching, wall repair, appliance connections and restoration. They also asked customers to describe the appliance and the route so quotes would match.

33% of the answers (87 of 261) brought this up.

Ask each contractor for a written quote including line sizing, trenching or wall repairs, appliance connections, permit fees, pressure testing, inspection coordination, and completion date.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get gas line installation done in Pinellas Park, FL 33781 before the end of the month. Who should I get quotes from?”, September 30, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 32 of the 261 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 32 of its 93, ChatGPT in 0 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 56. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 21 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 15 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 6 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 5 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 3 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and often could not confirm a contractor's license. A page that shows the gas license, names the job and lists a working number answers what they kept telling customers to verify.

The search results didn't confirm anyone's license, so check that before you hire.

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 205 ChatGPT and Claude answers about gas line installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 97% (198 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 52% (106 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 12% (24 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 11% (23 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (2 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 73% of its 56 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

  2. Say that you pull the permit and schedule the inspection, and include both in the price you quote.
  3. Say that a pressure test is part of every installation and what the customer receives as a record.
  4. Explain what you handle with the gas utility and what the customer arranges, and how it affects the timeline.
  5. Name gas line installation on its own page and list the jobs you take, from appliance hookups to new runs.
  6. List what a quote includes, such as line sizing, connections and repairs to walls or yard, and what is extra.
  7. Show the license that covers gas work, with its number and a link to the state lookup.
  8. Put a working phone number and a way to request a quote on the gas line page.

  10. List the towns and ZIP codes where you install gas lines and pull permits.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like gas line installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 261 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for gas line installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
