Who AI assistants recommend for generator transfer switch installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for generator transfer switch installation recommendations 277 times. Here is what they needed to see on an electrician's page before naming it to connect a generator to a home.

The short answer

Before naming an electrician for a transfer switch, assistants wanted to know which kind of hookup it installs: a manual switch, a panel interlock or an automatic switch. Then they looked for the inlet, panel and load checks, the permit and inspection, and a quote that lists each part.

What people actually asked

We asked for generator transfer switch installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 277 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:

  • “I'm looking to get generator transfer switch installation done in Dunedin, FL 34698 in the next few weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”104 answers, asked with five different timings: in two weeks, in the next few weeks, next month, before the end of the month and sometime this month
  • “Who should I call for generator transfer switch installation in St. Petersburg, FL 33713?”94 answers
  • “Generator transfer switch installation near me — I'm in Clearwater, FL 33755. Who do you recommend?”79 answers

Together, the 277 answers covered 16 towns in Pinellas County: including Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park and Seminole. Each town came up in 3 to 32 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 111, Claude 86 and Google AI Mode 80.

Customers also call it “automatic transfer switch install”, “manual transfer switch install”, “portable generator hookup” or “generator inlet box installation”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Will this transfer arrangement work with my generator and intended loads?” The proposed switching equipment, generator and selected circuits need a coordinated assessment.

What your generator transfer switch installation page has to explain

A transfer switch job is really a match between three things: the generator, the home's panel and the circuits the owner wants powered. Assistants often told customers to describe their generator first, because a portable unit and a standby unit lead to different equipment. A page that says which generators and switch types the electrician works with lets an assistant match it to the customer's setup.

Many electricians list generator work in a single line, so assistants could not tell whether a company does portable hookups, standby systems or both. Some answers noticed a company's page said only commercial, or only portable installs, and told the customer to call and ask. The page should name each kind of hookup the electrician installs, and say plainly which ones it does not.

Customers also cared about the paperwork. Answers kept telling them to ask who pulls the permit, who books the inspection and whether both are in the price. A page that walks through the job from site visit to final test, and names who handles each step, answers the questions assistants left open.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 277 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for generator transfer switch installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Manual switch, interlock or automatic switch?

Most answers told customers to settle which kind of switch they need before asking for quotes. Assistants tied the choice to the generator and the panel, and warned that price and install time differ a lot between types.

60% of the answers (167 of 277) brought this up.

Ask whether your setup needs a manual transfer switch, automatic transfer switch, or panel interlock, and confirm permitting and licensing before scheduling.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for generator transfer switch installation in 33772?”, October 7, 2026

Is there an outdoor inlet for a portable generator?

For portable generators, assistants told customers to ask for an outdoor inlet paired with an interlock or manual switch. Answers often asked whether the inlet box and the cord were part of the price.

51% of the answers (140 of 277) brought this up.

— Claude, asked “Generator transfer switch installation near me — I'm in 33772. Who do you recommend?”, October 1, 2026

Will the panel handle it, and which circuits are covered?

Assistants regularly told customers to ask for a load calculation and a check of whether the panel can take the switch. Answers warned that some homes need a panel upgrade first, which changes the price.

39% of the answers (108 of 277) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote includes the permit, inspection, and any load calculation/panel work, since transfer switch jobs sometimes need panel upgrades depending on your home's amperage.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get generator transfer switch installation done in Largo, FL 33770 next month. Who should I get quotes from?”, September 4, 2026

Who pulls the permit and books the inspection?

Many answers told customers to ask who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection. Some warned that permit and inspection timing can push the job past the date the customer wants.

31% of the answers (87 of 277) brought this up.

Ask who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for generator transfer switch installation in St. Petersburg, FL 33713?”, October 14, 2026

Does the quote list every part of the job?

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 35 of the 277 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 35 of its 86, ChatGPT in 0 of its 111 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 80. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 26 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 10 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 9 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 7 answers

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job, followed by reviews and license details. A page with a working number, the license and recent reviews of generator work answers what they kept sending customers away to find.

I couldn't find phone numbers in my search results, so you'll need to get those from each company's site or listing.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get generator transfer switch installation done in Clearwater, FL 33755 in two weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 9, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 197 ChatGPT and Claude answers about generator transfer switch installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 100% (197 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 41% (80 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 5% (9 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 5% (9 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 59% of its 80 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your generator transfer switch installation page checklist

Work through this list on your generator transfer switch installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “generator transfer switch installation”, “automatic transfer switch install” or “manual transfer switch install” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. List each switch type you install, which generators each one suits, and how you help a customer choose.
  3. Describe the portable generator hookup you install, including the inlet box, and say whether the cord is included.
  4. Explain how you check the panel and plan the circuits, and say what happens if a panel upgrade is needed.
  5. State that you pull the permit and book the inspection, and whether both are in the quoted price.
  6. Show what a typical quote lists, line by line, including testing the switch once it is in.
  7. Say whether you handle the gas or fuel hookup and the pad, and which generator brands you are authorized to install.
  8. Put a working phone number and a quote request form on the transfer switch page itself.
  9. Link to recent reviews and point to ones that mention a generator or transfer switch install.
  10. Show the license number with a link to the state lookup, and say what insurance you carry.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like generator transfer switch installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What is the difference between a manual transfer switch, an interlock kit and an automatic transfer switch?

Answers described manual switches and interlock kits as the usual choice for a portable generator, with an outdoor inlet. Automatic switches went with whole-home standby units. The right one depends on the generator and the panel, so the page should explain which the electrician recommends for each setup.

Does a generator transfer switch installation need a permit?

Assistants regularly said this work usually needs a permit and an inspection, and told customers to ask who pulls the permit. The rules are set locally, so the page should say that the electrician handles the permit and inspection where it works, and whether that is in the price.

What should a transfer switch quote include?

Answers told customers to look for the switch or interlock, the inlet box or wiring, any panel work, the permit, the inspection and a load calculation. For standby units, they added the pad and gas line. A page that shows a sample quote lets customers compare prices fairly.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 14, 2026, they answered 277 questions about generator transfer switch installation: ChatGPT 111, Claude 86, Google AI Mode 80.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 277 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for generator transfer switch installation in 16 towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
