How AI assistants choose who to recommend for gutter cleaning

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for gutter cleaning recommendations 312 times. Here is what they needed to see on a company’s page before naming it for gutter cleaning.

The short answer

Before naming a company for gutter cleaning, assistants looked for what the cleaning actually includes: flushing the downspouts, hauling the debris away and sending before and after photos. They also wanted to know how the price is set, whether two-story homes cost more, and what happens when damage is found.

What people actually asked

We asked for gutter cleaning in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 312 answers it produced between September 4 and October 11, 2026:

  • “Gutter cleaning near me — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL 33713. Who do you recommend?”104 answers
  • “Looking for someone to do gutter cleaning in Largo, FL 33770 in two weeks. Any recommendations?”104 answers, asked with five different timings: next month, sometime this month, in the next few weeks, before the end of the month and in two weeks
  • “Who should I call for gutter cleaning in Clearwater, FL?”104 answers

Together, the 312 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 39 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 120 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “gutter clearing”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“What is cleaned and how will completion be explained?” Clearing debris, repairing damaged gutters and changing drainage arrangements are different services.

What your gutter cleaning page has to explain

Gutter cleaning sounds simple, but answers treated it as a list of separate tasks. Assistants told customers again and again to ask whether the downspouts are flushed or only the gutters scooped, and whether the debris is bagged and taken away. A cleaning that skips either one is a different service. A page that lists every task in a standard cleaning answers most of what customers were told to ask.

Customers could not see the roofline themselves, so answers told them to ask for before and after photos as proof the job was done. Some also mentioned a re-clean guarantee. The page should say how a customer learns the cleaning is finished, and what is sent to them afterward.

Many companies that came up mainly sold repairs, installations or gutter guards. Answers told customers to ask whether a company does plain cleaning, and whether it was cleaning only or also selling guards. The page should keep cleaning separate from repair, and say what the crew does when it finds a loose hanger or a leak.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 312 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for gutter cleaning, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Are the downspouts flushed?

Assistants most often told customers to ask whether the company flushes the downspouts or just clears the gutters. A clean gutter with a blocked downspout still overflows, so this was the first thing customers compared.

44% of the answers (136 of 312) brought this up.

Ask whether the price covers downspouts, and whether they flush them or just clear the gutters.

— Claude, asked “Gutter cleaning near me — I'm in 33781. Who do you recommend?”, September 19, 2026

Is the debris bagged and taken away?

Many answers told customers to ask whether the price includes bagging and hauling away the debris, and cleaning up afterward. Customers wanted to know the yard and walkways would not be left covered in what came out of the gutters.

38% of the answers (117 of 312) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote includes bagging and hauling the debris, and flushing the downspouts.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for gutter cleaning in St. Petersburg, FL 33713?”, October 2, 2026

Does the customer get before and after photos?

Assistants often told customers to ask for before and after photos when the job is done. Customers usually cannot see into their gutters, so photos were how they knew the cleaning was complete.

22% of the answers (69 of 312) brought this up.

Ask for before-and-after photos when the job is done.

— Claude, asked “Looking for someone to do gutter cleaning in Pinellas Park, FL 33781 in the next few weeks. Any recommendations?”, September 20, 2026

How is the price set, and do two-story homes cost more?

Answers told customers to ask whether the price is flat or per linear foot, and whether it changes for two-story sections or gutter guards. Customers wanted a total price before booking, not a surprise once the crew saw the house.

22% of the answers (69 of 312) brought this up.

Ask whether they flush downspouts, bag/remove debris, and whether the quote changes for two-story sections.

— ChatGPT, asked “Gutter cleaning near me — I'm in Dunedin, FL 34698. Who do you recommend?”, September 12, 2026

What happens when the crew finds damage?

Some answers told customers to ask whether the cleaning includes checking for loose hangers or leaks, and whether minor repairs are part of the quote. Customers wanted to know what they would hear about and what they would be charged for.

7% of the answers (23 of 312) brought this up.

Ask whether downspout flushing, debris haul-away, and minor repairs are included in the quote.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for gutter cleaning in Dunedin, FL?”, October 9, 2026

Is it a cleaning or a sales visit?

Answers flagged companies that mainly sell repairs, installations or guards, and told customers to ask whether they do plain cleaning. Some suggested asking whether the visit is cleaning only, and whether a re-clean guarantee applies.

3% of the answers (10 of 312) brought this up.

Ask whether they do standalone gutter cleaning, not just repair or installation, and whether they flush downspouts as part of the price.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for gutter cleaning in Pinellas Park, FL 33781?”, September 4, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 45 of the 312 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 44 of its 120, ChatGPT in 1 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 35 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 21 answers

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for gutter cleaners, followed by reviews they could verify. Many sent customers to a booking platform or contact form instead, so a working number on the cleaning page matters.

I didn't find a phone number, so use the contact form on their site.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for gutter cleaning in Seminole, FL 33772?”, October 2, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 240 ChatGPT and Claude answers about gutter cleaning, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 98% (234 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 88% (211 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 12% (29 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 78% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your gutter cleaning page checklist

Work through this list on your gutter cleaning page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “gutter cleaning” or “gutter clearing” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Say that every cleaning includes flushing each downspout, and how the crew confirms water runs through.
  3. State that debris is bagged and removed from the property, and describe the cleanup done before the crew leaves.
  4. Say that photos are sent after every cleaning, and show a real example with the address removed.
  5. Explain how the cleaning price is figured and what raises it, such as height, length or guards.
  6. Say what the crew checks during a cleaning, and how it reports and prices any repair it finds.
  7. Offer gutter cleaning as its own service, and say whether guard or repair quotes are given only when asked.
  8. Put a working phone number on the gutter cleaning page and keep it the same on every listing.
  9. Link to recent reviews and point to ones from gutter cleaning customers.
  10. State a starting price or how the price is figured, and what the price includes.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like gutter cleaning, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What should a gutter cleaning include?

Answers about this job most often told customers to ask for downspout flushing, bagging and hauling away the debris, cleanup and before and after photos. A page that lists these as standard, and says what costs extra, answers most of their questions.

Is gutter cleaning the same as gutter repair?

No. Answers kept the two apart, and told customers to ask whether a company does plain cleaning or mainly repairs and installs. A page should say what the crew does when it finds damage during a cleaning, and how a repair is quoted.

Why do some gutter cleaners charge more for two-story homes?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the price changes for two-story sections, steep roofs or gutter guards, since these take more time and ladder work. A page should explain what raises the price so the customer is not surprised.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 11, 2026, they answered 312 questions about gutter cleaning: ChatGPT 120, Claude 120, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 312 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 11, 2026. We asked for gutter cleaning in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
