How AI assistants choose who to recommend for gutter installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for gutter installation recommendations 188 times. Here is what they needed to see on a company’s page before naming it for a gutter installation.

The short answer

Before naming a company for gutter installation, assistants looked for seamless aluminum gutters formed on site, the gutter size and gauge, and how downspouts are placed. Then they checked whether the quote covers removing old gutters and fascia repair, whether guards cost extra, and what the warranty covers.

What people actually asked

We asked for gutter installation in two different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 188 answers it produced between September 7 and October 13, 2026:

  • “Who should I call for gutter installation in Dunedin, FL 34698?”103 answers
  • “Gutter installation near me — I'm in Tarpon Springs, FL. Who do you recommend?”85 answers

Together, the 188 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Dunedin, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Largo, Palm Harbor and Clearwater. Each town came up in 22 to 24 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 72, Claude 68 and Google AI Mode 48.

Customers also call it “gutter and downspout installation”, “seamless gutter installation” or “new gutters”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“What gutter and drainage work is included in the installation?” The gutter run, outlets and discharge arrangements need to be described as a complete proposed scope.

What your gutter installation page has to explain

Gutter quotes are hard to compare because they leave so much out. Answers told customers to ask each company the same questions: what size and gauge, how many downspouts, which hangers, and whether removal of the old gutters is included. A page that describes a complete installation, from the gutter run to where the water goes, answers those questions before the call.

Many companies that came up were not gutter installers first. Answers flagged screen and aluminum companies, handyman listings and roofers, and told customers to ask whether they actually install gutters. A page that names gutter installation as a service, and shows finished jobs with the layout visible, makes the company easy to match to the request.

Customers in heavy rain asked about sizing and storms. Answers mentioned larger gutters, larger downspouts, hidden hangers and hanger spacing for hurricane season. They also asked whether gutter guards were part of the price. The page should explain how the crew sizes a system for the house and which extras are priced separately.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 188 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for gutter installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Does the quote include removal and fascia repair?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the estimate includes removing and disposing of old gutters, checking the fascia and cleaning up. Customers wanted to know the price was for the whole job.

52% of the answers (97 of 188) brought this up.

Ask for seamless aluminum gutters, downspout placement, warranty terms, and whether the estimate includes removal/disposal of old gutters.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for gutter installation in 33772?”, September 21, 2026

Are gutter guards included or extra?

Many answers told customers to ask about gutter guards, especially under trees, and whether they are included or priced separately. Customers comparing quotes needed to know which ones had guards built in.

48% of the answers (91 of 188) brought this up.

Ask whether gutter guards are included or priced separately.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for gutter installation in Pinellas Park, FL 33781?”, October 12, 2026

What size and gauge are the gutters?

Answers told customers to ask about gutter size, the metal's gauge and the hangers used, since these affect durability. Many asked whether the company recommends larger gutters for heavy rain.

29% of the answers (55 of 188) brought this up.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for gutter installation in Clearwater, FL?”, September 21, 2026

Where will the downspouts go?

Answers told customers to ask how many downspouts the quote includes, what size they are and where they will be placed. Some customers valued a sketch of the gutter layout before work began.

22% of the answers (41 of 188) brought this up.

Are the gutters seamless and formed on site?

Assistants regularly told customers to ask for seamless aluminum gutters and whether the company forms them on site. Answers said this avoids seams that can leak, so it was one of the first ways customers compared installers.

20% of the answers (37 of 188) brought this up.

Ask whether they form the gutters on site, because that avoids seams that can leak.

— Claude, asked “Gutter installation near me — I'm in Dunedin, FL 34698. Who do you recommend?”, October 13, 2026

What does the warranty cover?

Answers told customers to ask what the warranty covers for materials and for labor, since some cover only the material. Customers wanted the installation itself covered, not just the aluminum.

16% of the answers (31 of 188) brought this up.

Ask what the warranty covers, both workmanship and materials.

— Claude, asked “Gutter installation near me — I'm in Clearwater, FL 33755. Who do you recommend?”, October 13, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 25 of the 188 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 25 of its 68, ChatGPT in 0 of its 72 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 48. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 22 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 5 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 3 answers

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for gutter installers. Several sent customers to a contact form or a directory instead, so a working number on the gutter page matters.

I couldn't find phone numbers in the results, so I haven't listed any rather than guess.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for gutter installation in Palm Harbor, FL 34683?”, October 12, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 140 ChatGPT and Claude answers about gutter installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 92% (129 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 76% (106 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 28% (39 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 85% of its 48 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your gutter installation page checklist

Work through this list on your gutter installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “gutter installation”, “gutter and downspout installation” or “seamless gutter installation” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. List what every installation includes, such as removal, disposal and cleanup, and how fascia repairs are priced.
  3. Say whether guards are offered, which types, and whether they are included in the price or added on.
  4. State the gutter sizes and gauge you install, the hangers you use, and how you decide what a house needs.
  5. Explain how you plan downspout count, size and placement, and show a finished layout on a real job.
  6. Say whether your gutters are seamless and formed on site, and what material and colors you offer.
  7. Describe the materials warranty and the workmanship warranty separately, with what each covers and for how long.
  8. Put one working phone number and address on the gutter page and keep them the same on every listing.
  9. Link to recent reviews and point to ones from customers who had new gutters installed.
  10. List the towns and ZIP codes where you install gutters.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like gutter installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What should a gutter installation quote include?

Answers about this job told customers to ask for the gutter material, size and gauge, downspout count and placement, hangers, removal of old gutters, fascia repair, cleanup and both warranties. A page that lists these as standard makes quotes easy to compare.

Are seamless gutters better than sectional gutters?

Assistants often told customers to ask for seamless aluminum gutters formed on site, because that avoids seams that can leak. A page should say whether the company installs seamless gutters and when it would suggest something else.

Should gutter guards be installed with new gutters?

Many answers told customers to ask about gutter guards, especially for homes under trees, and whether they were included in the price. A page should explain the guard options and say whether they are part of the quote.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 7 and October 13, 2026, they answered 188 questions about gutter installation: ChatGPT 72, Claude 68, Google AI Mode 48.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 188 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 7 and October 13, 2026. We asked for gutter installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
