How AI assistants choose who to recommend for gutter repair
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for gutter repair recommendations 304 times. Here is what they needed to see on a company’s page before naming it for a gutter repair.
The short answer
Before naming a company for gutter repair, assistants first needed proof that it takes small repair jobs, not only new installations. Then they looked for which problems it fixes, whether it quotes repair and replacement separately, whether it checks the fascia behind the gutter, and what warranty covers the work.

What people actually asked
We asked for gutter repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 304 answers it produced between September 4 and October 11, 2026:
- “Gutter repair near me — I'm in 33772. Who do you recommend?”104 answers
- “Looking for someone to do gutter repair in 33713 in the next few weeks. Any recommendations?”104 answers, asked with five different timings: in the next few weeks, in two weeks, before the end of the month, next month and sometime this month
- “Who should I call for gutter repair in 34683?”96 answers
Together, the 304 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 38 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 120 and Google AI Mode 64.
Customers also call it “downspout repair” or “gutter fix”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Are you repairing a leak, a damaged section or a drainage problem?” Different complaints should lead to an assessment rather than the same generic repair promise.
What your gutter repair page has to explain
Many gutter companies sell new gutters and say little about repairs. Assistants often found a listing for installation or gutter guards and told the customer to ask whether the company takes repair jobs at all. Several warned that some companies prefer full replacements. A page that says plainly which repairs the company does, and the smallest job it takes, answers the first question.
Answers treated each gutter problem as a different job. A leaking seam, a sagging run, a section pulling away and a blocked downspout each needed a different fix. Assistants told customers to describe the problem, send photos and ask whether the company repairs that issue. A page that lists common problems, with a real repair for each, shows the company will assess rather than guess.
Customers also worried about what they could not see. Answers told them to ask whether the crew checks the fascia and soffit for soft or rotted wood, and whether it corrects pitch and hangers instead of just sealing the leak. The page should explain what a repair visit checks and how extra work found there is quoted.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 304 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for gutter repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Will the crew check the wood behind the gutter?
Many answers told customers to ask whether the crew will check the fascia and soffit for rot while it is there. They said a gutter will not stay up if the wood behind it is soft, so this can change the size of the job.
57% of the answers (173 of 304) brought this up.
Ask whether they can inspect for fascia/wood rot too, since gutter leaks in that area often turn into fascia repair once they get up there.
Does the company fix this particular problem?
Assistants told customers to say whether the gutter is leaking, sagging, detached or has a damaged downspout, and to ask whether the company repairs that issue. Different problems needed different fixes, so a general repair promise was not enough.
47% of the answers (143 of 304) brought this up.
Ask whether they handle your specific issue—leaks, sagging, detached sections, or downspout repair—and request a written estimate.
Will the repair fix the cause, not just the leak?
Answers told customers to ask whether the repair includes correcting the gutter pitch, replacing hangers and resealing joints. Customers wanted the cause of the problem fixed, not just the obvious leak patched.
23% of the answers (71 of 304) brought this up.
Ask for an itemized quote, proof of insurance, and whether they’ll correct the gutter pitch—not just seal the leak.
Does the company take small repair jobs?
Assistants regularly told customers to ask whether a company handles small repairs, since some gutter companies prefer replacement or installation work. Many listings showed only installs, so answers could not tell whether a repair would be taken.
19% of the answers (59 of 304) brought this up.
Ask whether they do small repairs, since some gutter companies prefer replacement/install jobs.
Will the company repair it or push a replacement?
Answers told customers to ask whether the company would repair the existing gutters or push a full replacement. Some suggested asking for both to be quoted separately, so the customer could see which made more sense.
8% of the answers (23 of 304) brought this up.
Ask for repair and replacement to be quoted separately, since some companies push full replacement.
Is the repair work under warranty?
Assistants often told customers to ask whether the repair carries a warranty on the work, and whether it is in writing. A repair without one left customers unsure what would happen if the same section failed again.
3% of the answers (10 of 304) brought this up.
Ask whether the repair carries a workmanship warranty.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 42 of the 304 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 41 of its 120, ChatGPT in 1 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 64. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 39 answers
- Reviews it could check: 13 answers
- When the company could do the work: 4 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 4 answers
Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for gutter repair, and many listings did not say whether the company does repairs at all. A page that names gutter repair next to a working number answers both.
I couldn't confirm that it does repairs rather than just installation.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 240 ChatGPT and Claude answers about gutter repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 96% (230 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 83% (200 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 6% (15 answers)
- An official license lookup: under 1% (2 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 83% of its 64 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your gutter repair page checklist
Work through this list on your gutter repair page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.
- Use “gutter repair”, “downspout repair” or “gutter fix” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
- Say that every repair includes a fascia check, and explain how wood repairs are quoted and approved.
- List the gutter problems you repair, and show a real example of each with what was found and what was done.
- Describe what a repair visit checks, such as pitch, hangers, seams and downspout drainage, and what the quote covers.
- Say plainly that the company does gutter repairs, list the kinds it takes, and name any minimum charge.
- Explain how the crew decides between a repair and a replacement, and offer to quote both when it is close.
- State the warranty on repair work, what it covers and how long it lasts, in writing on the page.
- Put a working phone number on the gutter repair page and keep it the same on every listing.
- Link to recent reviews and point to ones from customers who had a gutter repaired.
- Say how soon a repair visit can usually happen and whether customers can send photos first.
Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like gutter repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
What should a gutter repair page say?
Answers about this job wanted to know whether the company takes small repairs, which problems it fixes, whether it quotes repair and replacement separately, and whether it checks the fascia. They also asked about the warranty on the repair work.
When does a gutter need replacing instead of repairing?
Assistants told customers to ask whether repair or replacement makes more sense, and some noted that replacing a badly worn run can cost less than repeated repairs. A page should explain how the crew makes that call.
Why does gutter repair sometimes include fascia work?
Answers said a leaking gutter often damages the fascia behind it, and that a gutter will not stay up if that wood is soft. A page should say whether the crew checks the fascia and how wood repairs are quoted.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 11, 2026, they answered 304 questions about gutter repair: ChatGPT 120, Claude 120, Google AI Mode 64.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 304 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 11, 2026. We asked for gutter repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
