Who AI assistants recommend for hail damage roof repair
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for hail damage roof repair recommendations 290 times. Here is what they needed to see on a roofer’s page before naming it for hail damage repair.
The short answer
Before naming a roofer for hail damage, assistants wanted proof that it could show what the hail did to this particular roof. They looked for help with the insurance adjuster, a same-day tarp if water was getting in, dated photos and a written report, and real experience with hail claims.

What people actually asked
We asked for hail damage roof repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 290 answers it produced between September 5 and October 12, 2026:
- “I need hail damage roof repair tomorrow morning — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL. Who can actually come out?”103 answers, asked with five different timings: within the next few hours, first thing tomorrow, tonight, tomorrow morning and today
- “Hail damage roof repair near me — I'm in 33770. Who do you recommend?”94 answers
- “Who should I call for hail damage roof repair in 33755?”93 answers
Together, the 290 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Largo, Palm Harbor, Seminole, Clearwater, Dunedin, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and Pinellas Park. Each town came up in 35 to 37 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 98 and Google AI Mode 72.
Customers also call it “hail damage repair” or “hail damage roof inspection”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“How will you document the condition of the roof after a hail event?” Observed condition needs evidence; a storm in the area does not by itself establish damage to a particular roof.
What your hail damage roof repair page has to explain
A hailstorm in the area does not prove a particular roof was damaged. Assistants told customers to ask for an inspection that records bruised shingles, granule loss, cracked tiles or dents, and some asked whether it separates real damage from cosmetic marks. That evidence is what the insurer looks at. A roofer's page should explain how it inspects after hail and what its findings look like, with a real example.
Assistants struggled to find roofers that clearly did hail work. Many listings said storm damage or roof repair, and answers told customers to ask each company about its hail experience when they called. Some answers looked for training in hail inspection or for roofers that meet the adjuster on the roof. A page that names hail as its own service, with past hail claims it has handled, fills a gap the answers kept pointing to.
Insurance shapes the whole job. Customers were told to call their insurer first, ask about a separate hail deductible and get the adjuster's inspection before committing to repairs. They were also warned about crews that offer to cover the deductible or ask for the claim to be signed over. The page should describe how the roofer works alongside the claim, and what it will not do.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 290 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for hail damage roof repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Will the roofer work with the insurance adjuster?
Many answers told customers to ask whether the roofer documents damage for the insurer and meets the adjuster at the roof. Assistants also told customers to check their hail deductible and get the adjuster's inspection before committing. Customers wanted a roofer who helps the claim without taking it over.
54% of the answers (156 of 290) brought this up.
Ask for an adjuster inspection before you commit to repairs.
Can the roofer tarp the roof before the full repair?
When water could get in, assistants told customers to ask for a same-day or next-day tarp first, with the full repair scheduled later. They said a tarp is usually easier to book quickly than a repair. Customers wanted to know a roofer would protect the house while the claim moved forward.
51% of the answers (149 of 290) brought this up.
Ask for a same-day or next-day tarp or temporary repair if water could get in.
Is the roofer local, or one of the crews that follow hail?
Assistants warned that out-of-town crews often arrive after hail, knock on doors, push customers to sign the same day and ask for a large deposit. They told customers not to sign over insurance benefits on the spot. These warnings decided which roofers customers would let on the roof.
33% of the answers (96 of 290) brought this up.
Does the customer get dated photos and a written report?
Assistants told customers to ask for a written inspection report with photos before filing or finalizing a claim. Several asked for dated photos of the hail impacts. The customer can hand these to the insurer, so they are part of what the roofer delivers.
21% of the answers (61 of 290) brought this up.
Ask for a written inspection report with photos before filing or finalizing an insurance claim.
What does the inspection look for after hail?
Answers named the signs customers should expect an inspection to record: granule loss, bruised or fractured shingles, cracked tiles and dents. Some told customers to ask whether the inspection separates real damage from cosmetic marks. That separation is what turns a storm in the news into evidence about one roof.
17% of the answers (50 of 290) brought this up.
Ask for a free inspection, photos documenting hail impacts, proof of Florida licensing/insurance, and a written estimate.
Has the roofer handled hail claims before?
Assistants often could not find a roofer that clearly advertised hail work. They told customers to ask each company about its hail experience when they called. A roofer whose page only says storm damage left that question open.
11% of the answers (33 of 290) brought this up.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 43 of the 290 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 42 of its 98, ChatGPT in 0 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 1 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 21 answers
- Reviews it could check: 10 answers
- When the company could do the work: 10 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 9 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and rarely could confirm that anyone could come out tonight or tomorrow morning. Several could not find any roofer that clearly advertised hail work.
I couldn't confirm any of them handle hail claims specifically, so ask each one about hail experience when you call.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 218 ChatGPT and Claude answers about hail damage roof repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 98% (213 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 38% (82 answers)
- An official license lookup: 19% (42 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 4% (8 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: 2% (4 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 75% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like hail damage roof repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
How do I know if hail actually damaged my roof?
Assistants told customers to ask for an inspection that records granule loss, bruised shingles, cracked tiles or dents, with dated photos. A storm nearby does not prove damage to one roof. A roofer's page should explain what its hail inspection checks and show a sample report.
Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first after hail?
Many answers told customers to call the insurer first, ask about any separate hail deductible and get the adjuster's inspection before committing to repairs. A tarp to stop water can come sooner. A roofer's page should say how it fits around the claim.
What should a roofer give me for a hail damage insurance claim?
Answers mentioned a written inspection report, dated photos of the hail impacts, an itemized estimate and a meeting with the adjuster. Assistants also warned against signing over the claim. The page should list exactly what documents the roofer provides.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 5 and October 12, 2026, they answered 290 questions about hail damage roof repair: ChatGPT 120, Claude 98, Google AI Mode 72.

How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 290 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 5 and October 12, 2026. We asked for hail damage roof repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
