Who AI assistants recommend for knob-and-tube wiring replacement

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for knob-and-tube wiring replacement recommendations 278 times. Here is what they needed to see on an electrician’s page before naming it for knob-and-tube work.

The short answer

Before naming an electrician for knob-and-tube replacement, assistants looked for proof the company does old-home rewires. Then they wanted to know whether the quote is a full or partial rewire, how walls are opened and patched, how the family lives in the house during the work, and what paperwork the insurer will receive.

What people actually asked

We asked for knob-and-tube wiring replacement in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 278 answers it produced between September 7 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Who should I call for knob-and-tube wiring replacement in 33770?”104 answers
  • “I'm looking to get knob-and-tube wiring replacement done in Dunedin, FL 34698 in two weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”88 answers, asked with five different timings: in the next few weeks, sometime this month, in two weeks, before the end of the month and next month
  • “Knob-and-tube wiring replacement near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL 34683. Who do you recommend?”86 answers

Together, the 278 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor and Seminole. Each town came up in 34 to 35 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 94 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “knob and tube removal” or “old house rewiring”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“How will you establish the extent of the wiring that needs work?” A legacy wiring label does not define the scope of a whole property project.

What your knob-and-tube wiring replacement page has to explain

Many electricians list rewiring or panel upgrades, but few name knob-and-tube. Assistants often could not tell whether a company had removed it before. They also warned that the label does not set the size of the job. Some homes have a few old circuits, others have them throughout. A page should explain how the electrician inspects the attic, panel and walls before quoting.

Walls decide much of the cost. Assistants told customers that opening plaster and drywall is often the biggest difference between quotes. Some electricians patch and paint, others leave it to a separate contractor. Answers also asked how the house stays livable, whether work is done in phases and what happens when surprises appear behind the walls. The page should answer each of these.

Insurance is often the reason for the call. Answers said many Florida insurers restrict or charge more for homes with active knob-and-tube wiring. Assistants told customers to ask the insurer what it needs, then ask the electrician for a permit final or completion letter. A completed project that links the inspection findings to the work done shows what the homeowner will get.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 278 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for knob-and-tube wiring replacement, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

What paperwork will the insurer get?

64% of the answers (179 of 278) brought this up.

Who opens and patches the walls?

63% of the answers (175 of 278) brought this up.

Ask if drywall patching is included in their scope or if you need to hire a separate drywall contractor.

— Google AI Mode, asked “I'm looking to get knob-and-tube wiring replacement done in Pinellas Park, FL 33781 next month. Who should I get quotes from?”, September 13, 2026

Has this electrician replaced knob-and-tube before?

50% of the answers (139 of 278) brought this up.

Ask whether they've replaced knob-and-tube wiring and how they handle walls and attics in older homes.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for knob-and-tube wiring replacement in 33713?”, October 12, 2026

Who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection?

Answers often said a rewire needs a permit and inspection, and that the electrician should pull it under its own license. Some noted insurers ask for the permit record. One answer mentioned extra review in a historic district.

38% of the answers (105 of 278) brought this up.

Ask who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get knob-and-tube wiring replacement done in 34683 before the end of the month. Who should I get quotes from?”, September 30, 2026

— Claude, asked “Knob-and-tube wiring replacement near me — I'm in 33770. Who do you recommend?”, October 13, 2026

Is it a full rewire or only the old circuits?

Answers told customers to ask whether the electrician will replace everything or only the knob-and-tube circuits, and whether old wiring is removed or left in place. Assistants said quotes should separate full and partial rewires so they can be compared.

14% of the answers (39 of 278) brought this up.

Ask whether they would replace everything or only the knob-and-tube circuits.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get knob-and-tube wiring replacement done in St. Petersburg, FL sometime this month. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 14, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 41 of the 278 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 39 of its 94, ChatGPT in 2 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 18 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 11 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 4 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 3 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm that a company does knob-and-tube work. A page that names the service, explains the inspection and gives a working number answers what they kept sending customers to ask.

These are the best leads, and none of them has confirmed knob-and-tube experience yet, so ask each one directly.

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 206 ChatGPT and Claude answers about knob-and-tube wiring replacement, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 100% (206 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 45% (92 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 21% (44 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 6% (13 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (1 answer)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 69% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like knob-and-tube wiring replacement, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 278 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 7 and October 14, 2026. We asked for knob-and-tube wiring replacement in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
