Who AI assistants recommend for light switch installation and repair

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for light switch installation and repair recommendations 262 times. Here is what they needed to see on an electrician’s page before naming it for switch work.

The short answer

Before naming an electrician for switch work, assistants most often looked for the minimum service-call fee, since a switch is a small job. Then they looked for an upfront price and whether troubleshooting is priced apart from a swap. They also checked which dimmers and smart switches it installs, and how a hot or buzzing switch is handled.

What people actually asked

We asked for light switch installation and repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 262 answers it produced between September 3 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Looking for someone to do light switch installation and repair in 34698 in two weeks. Any recommendations?”96 answers, asked with five different timings: in the next few weeks, next month, before the end of the month, in two weeks and sometime this month
  • “Who should I call for light switch installation and repair in 33755?”94 answers
  • “Light switch installation and repair near me — I'm in Largo, FL. Who do you recommend?”72 answers

Together, the 262 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin and Seminole. Each town came up in 32 to 33 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 94 and Google AI Mode 48.

Customers also call it “switch installation”, “switch replacement” or “electrical switch repair”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Can you assess this switch problem or install the control I want?” Fault diagnosis and installing a new control require different information about the existing setup.

What your light switch installation and repair page has to explain

For a job this small, the visit fee often decides the choice. Answers kept telling customers to ask about a minimum service-call fee or trip charge before anything else. Some said that fee can matter more than the hourly rate. A page that states the minimum and what it covers answers the question most answers told customers to ask first.

A switch job can mean fixing a fault or putting in a new control. A switch that stops working, flickers or buzzes needs someone to find the cause. A new dimmer, smart switch or three-way setup needs details about the fixture and the existing wiring. Assistants told customers to ask for a fixed price for replacing or troubleshooting the switch. The page should explain both kinds of visit and what the customer should mention when booking.

Customers also wanted to make the visit worth the fee. Several answers suggested bundling a few switches or outlets into one trip. Answers also treated a switch that is hot, sparking or buzzing as urgent. The page should say whether several small fixes can share one visit, and how soon an urgent switch problem gets help.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 262 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for light switch installation and repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Is it a faulty switch or a new control?

Many answers separated troubleshooting a switch from simply replacing it. Assistants told customers to ask for a fixed price for each, so a hidden wiring fault does not surprise them later.

53% of the answers (140 of 262) brought this up.

Ask whether there’s a trip/service fee, whether they’re licensed and insured, and whether they can give a fixed price for replacing or troubleshooting the switch before work starts.

— ChatGPT, asked “Looking for someone to do light switch installation and repair in Palm Harbor, FL 34683 next month. Any recommendations?”, September 18, 2026

Does it install dimmers, smart switches and three-way switches?

Many answers mentioned dimmers and smart switches, and some asked the customer which kind they wanted before suggesting what to check. Compatibility with the fixture and existing wiring decides whether a new control works.

43% of the answers (113 of 262) brought this up.

Does it come quickly for a hot or buzzing switch?

Answers often treated a switch that is hot, buzzing or sparking as urgent. They told customers to ask about same-day service in that case. Electricians that showed fast help for these calls stood out.

43% of the answers (113 of 262) brought this up.

What is the minimum charge for a small switch job?

Answers told customers again and again to ask about a minimum service-call fee or trip charge. A single switch is a short visit, so the minimum can be most of the bill. Customers used that fee to compare electricians before booking.

35% of the answers (93 of 262) brought this up.

Many electricians have a minimum service-call fee for small jobs, so ask about it up front.

— Claude, asked “Light switch installation and repair near me — I'm in Dunedin, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 1, 2026

Is the price set before work starts, and what does it cover?

Assistants told customers to ask for a flat or upfront price, sometimes before the electrician is dispatched. They also told them to ask whether the quote includes the switch itself, the labor and any wiring or box repair.

26% of the answers (67 of 262) brought this up.

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 35 of the 262 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 35 of its 94, ChatGPT in 0 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 48. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 28 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 11 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 10 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 8 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 5 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and often could not confirm reviews, licenses or any price for switch work. A page with a direct number, the minimum fee and a license link answers what they kept telling customers to check.

I didn't find any price data for switch work.

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 214 ChatGPT and Claude answers about light switch installation and repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 96% (205 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 63% (134 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 7% (15 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 4% (8 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 3% (6 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 85% of its 48 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like light switch installation and repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 262 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 3 and October 14, 2026. We asked for light switch installation and repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
