Who AI assistants recommend for metal roofing installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for metal roofing installation recommendations 283 times. Here is what they needed to see on a roofer’s page before naming it to install a metal roof.

The short answer

Before naming a roofer for a metal roof, assistants needed to know which metal system it installs and that it really does metal work. They then looked for wind ratings with Florida product approval, finishes that hold up near salt air, past metal jobs nearby, warranties and material lead times.

What people actually asked

We asked for metal roofing installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 283 answers it produced between September 6 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Who should I call for metal roofing installation in 33755?”102 answers
  • “I'm looking to get metal roofing installation done in 33772 in two weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”96 answers, asked with five different timings: in the next few weeks, next month, in two weeks, before the end of the month and sometime this month
  • “Metal roofing installation near me — I'm in 33713. Who do you recommend?”85 answers

Together, the 283 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg, Dunedin, Seminole, Tarpon Springs and Largo. Each town came up in 34 to 36 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 99 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “metal roof replacement”, “standing seam metal roof” or “metal roof repair”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“What metal roofing system do you install and what does the project include?” A broad metal-roof label hides differences in system, details and project scope.

What your metal roofing installation page has to explain

Metal roof is a broad label. Answers kept separating standing seam from exposed-fastener and corrugated panels, and asked about panel gauge and material, such as steel or aluminum. These are different systems with different prices and lifespans. Assistants told customers to ask each company which system it uses so quotes could be compared. A roofer's page should name the systems it installs and show a finished job of each.

Many roofers list metal among their materials without showing any metal work. Assistants often could not confirm that a company installed metal roofs at all. Some found shingle-focused roofers whose credentials came from a shingle manufacturer, or companies that used partner installers rather than their own crews. A page that shows recent local metal jobs and says who installs them gives a clear answer.

Near the coast, a metal roof has to handle wind and salt. Answers told customers to ask for the wind rating, the Florida product approval and the finish's corrosion resistance. They also asked about material lead times, since some panel profiles and colors are special orders. The page should say which approvals its systems carry and how long materials usually take to arrive.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 283 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for metal roofing installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Which metal system does the roofer install?

Most answers told customers to ask whether a roofer installs standing seam, exposed-fastener or corrugated panels, and what gauge. Assistants said quotes should be broken out by system and material. Without this, two metal roof quotes are not comparing the same job.

61% of the answers (172 of 283) brought this up.

Ask each company what metal system it uses, such as standing seam or stamped panels, and what the warranty covers.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for metal roofing installation in 34698?”, September 21, 2026

What wind rating and product approval does the system carry?

Assistants told customers to ask for the wind rating and Florida product approval of the system being installed. Some noted that wind claims came from a company's own marketing and asked for the documents. Customers needed proof the roof meets the wind code.

51% of the answers (143 of 283) brought this up.

Ask for a Florida product approval on the roofing system.

— Claude, asked “Metal roofing installation near me — I'm in Dunedin, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 13, 2026

Will the panels and finish hold up to salt air?

Near the coast, answers told customers to ask about corrosion resistance and panel material, such as aluminum. Some asked about a separate warranty on the panel finish. Customers wanted the roof to last in salt air, not only to pass inspection.

25% of the answers (70 of 283) brought this up.

Ask about the wind rating and the corrosion resistance of the materials, since you're near the coast.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for metal roofing installation in Palm Harbor, FL?”, October 12, 2026

What do the material and workmanship warranties cover?

Assistants told customers to get both the material warranty and the workmanship warranty in writing. Some asked whether the roofer is certified by the panel manufacturer, since that can affect the warranty. These are separate promises.

22% of the answers (61 of 283) brought this up.

Ask who pulls the permit, what the timeline is, and how long the material warranty and the workmanship warranty each last.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get metal roofing installation done in 33713 before the end of the month. Who should I get quotes from?”, September 30, 2026

Has the roofer actually installed metal roofs nearby?

Assistants often could not confirm that a roofer installed metal at all. They told customers to ask for photos and addresses of recent local metal jobs. A listing that names metal in a list of materials did not settle the question.

20% of the answers (56 of 283) brought this up.

Ask for photos and addresses of metal roofs they've installed locally.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get metal roofing installation done in 33755 sometime this month. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 14, 2026

How long do the materials take to arrive?

Answers told customers to ask about material lead times, since some panel profiles and colors are special orders. They also noted that good metal roofers are often booked out. Customers with a deadline needed both answers.

14% of the answers (40 of 283) brought this up.

Ask each company for their earliest start date and the lead time on materials.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get metal roofing installation done in 33770 in two weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 14, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 41 of the 283 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 40 of its 99, ChatGPT in 1 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 28 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 10 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 8 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and often could not confirm that a roofer installed metal at all. A page that names its metal systems and shows local metal jobs answers what they kept telling customers to ask.

The search results didn't say whether metal is a specialty.

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 211 ChatGPT and Claude answers about metal roofing installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 96% (202 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 80% (168 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 27% (56 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 5% (11 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 93% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like metal roofing installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What is the difference between standing seam and exposed-fastener metal roofing?

Answers treated them as different systems with different prices and details, and told customers to ask which one a roofer installs. The roofer's page should explain the systems it offers, how they differ for a home, and show a finished job of each.

Is a metal roof good for a home near the coast in Florida?

Assistants told coastal customers to ask about the wind rating, Florida product approval and corrosion resistance of the panels and finish. They did not say one system suits every home. A roofer's page should say which materials it recommends near salt air and why.

How long does it take to get a metal roof installed?

Answers said some panel profiles and colors are special orders and that good metal roofers are often booked out. They told customers to ask for a start date and panel delivery date up front. The page should state usual lead times.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 6 and October 14, 2026, they answered 283 questions about metal roofing installation: ChatGPT 112, Claude 99, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 283 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 6 and October 14, 2026. We asked for metal roofing installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
