Who AI assistants recommend for a new HVAC system installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for a new HVAC system installation recommendations 264 times. Here is what they needed to see on an HVAC company's page before naming it for a full system install.

The short answer

Before naming a company for a new system, assistants looked for signs it sizes the system to the house with a load calculation. Then they asked about the exact equipment, who pulls the permit, how labor and equipment warranties differ, and what the written quote includes.

What people actually asked

We asked for a new HVAC system installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 264 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:

  • “I'm looking to get new HVAC system installation done in Clearwater, FL 33755 in two weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”96 answers, asked with five different timings: next month, before the end of the month, in two weeks, sometime this month and in the next few weeks
  • “Who should I call for new HVAC system installation in Pinellas Park, FL 33781?”88 answers
  • “New HVAC system installation near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL 34683. Who do you recommend?”80 answers

Together, the 264 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 33 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 80 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “full HVAC system replacement”, “new heating and cooling system” or “whole-home HVAC installation”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“What will you assess before proposing a new HVAC system?” The proposed equipment should be connected to the property's requirements and installation scope.

What your new HVAC system installation page has to explain

A new system is a large purchase that customers compare quote by quote. Assistants rarely ranked installers on reputation alone. Instead they handed customers a checklist for each quote: sizing, equipment, permit, warranty and total price. A page that answers that checklist before the call reads like the quote a customer is hoping to get.

The answers kept warning against simply swapping in a unit the same size as the old one. They told customers to ask for a load calculation, often called a Manual J, and to ask whether the ducts would be checked. The page should explain what the company looks at in the home before it proposes a system, and what the homeowner needs to share.

Answers also separated what the price covers from what costs extra. Customers were told to ask about removing the old unit, duct changes, electrical work, the drain line and the thermostat. A sample proposal with the customer's details removed shows exactly where those lines fall. It also shows the equipment model and efficiency rating a customer can compare.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 264 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for a new HVAC system installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Which equipment and efficiency rating is being quoted?

Many answers told customers to get the exact brand, model numbers and efficiency rating on every quote. Without them, two quotes for a new system cannot be compared fairly. Answers also mentioned asking whether the installer is an authorized dealer for the brand.

61% of the answers (160 of 264) brought this up.

Ask each contractor for a written quote showing the load calculation, equipment model, efficiency rating, ductwork/electrical changes, permit, labor warranty, and total installed price.

Will the system be sized to the house?

Assistants most often told customers to ask for a load calculation rather than a size swap. Answers warned that a system sized too large or too small is a common source of comfort complaints. Customers used this question to sort careful installers from the rest.

55% of the answers (144 of 264) brought this up.

Ask for a load calculation, which sizes the system to your home.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for new HVAC system installation in 33755?”, September 30, 2026

Who pulls the permit?

Answers regularly reminded customers that a full system replacement needs a permit, and told them to ask who pulls it. Several said a reputable installer handles it. Customers also asked whether the permit fee and final inspection were part of the price.

53% of the answers (139 of 264) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote includes the permit, which a system replacement needs, and a ductwork inspection.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for new HVAC system installation in Pinellas Park, FL 33781?”, October 14, 2026

What do the labor and equipment warranties cover?

Assistants told customers to ask about the labor warranty separately from the manufacturer's equipment warranty. Some asked who backs each one, the installer or the manufacturer. Customers also wanted to know whether the company registers the equipment so the warranty applies.

48% of the answers (126 of 264) brought this up.

Ask who backs the warranty, the installer or the manufacturer.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for new HVAC system installation in Largo, FL?”, October 14, 2026

Does the written quote itemize the job?

Answers kept telling customers to get written quotes from more than one company and compare them line by line. They wanted the equipment, labor, permit and extra work listed separately, with a total installed price. Some warned against quotes that ask for a large payment up front.

47% of the answers (123 of 264) brought this up.

Ask for a written quote that itemizes equipment, labor, permit and ductwork.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get new HVAC system installation done in 33713 before the end of the month. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 9, 2026

Are the ducts checked and included?

Many answers told customers to ask whether the quote includes a duct inspection and any needed duct repairs. Some noted that older homes often have leaky or undersized ducts that affect how a new system performs. Customers wanted to know if that work was priced in or extra.

24% of the answers (63 of 264) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote includes the permit, the ductwork inspection and any needed duct repairs.

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 34 of the 264 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 33 of its 80, ChatGPT in 1 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 26 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 6 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 3 answers

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job, and some left companies off rather than guess. Reliable pricing was also missing, so answers sent customers to get quotes. A page with a working number and a clear way to request a written quote fills both gaps.

I didn't include phone numbers because I couldn't verify them.

— Claude, asked “New HVAC system installation near me — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL 33713. Who do you recommend?”, October 1, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 192 ChatGPT and Claude answers about a new HVAC system installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 92% (177 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 66% (127 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 30% (58 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 14% (27 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 2% (3 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 82% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your new HVAC system installation page checklist

Work through this list on your new HVAC system installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “new HVAC system installation”, “full HVAC system replacement” or “new heating and cooling system” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Name the brands you install, the efficiency levels you offer, and whether you are an authorized dealer for each brand.
  3. Say that every proposal starts with a load calculation, and describe what you measure in the home to do it.
  4. State that you pull the permit for every installation, whether its fee is in the quote, and who schedules the inspection.
  5. Describe your labor warranty and the equipment warranty in plain words, and say who registers the equipment.
  6. Show a sample written proposal with the customer's details removed, so a reader can see how your quotes are laid out.
  7. Explain how you check the existing ducts and how duct repairs or changes are shown on the quote.
  8. Put a working phone number and a quote request form on the installation page itself.
  9. Link to your recent reviews and point to ones from customers who had a full system installed.
  10. Show your state license number with a link to the state lookup, and say what insurance you carry.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like a new HVAC system installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What should a quote for a new HVAC system include?

Answers about this job most often listed a load calculation, the equipment brand and model, its efficiency rating, the permit, labor and equipment warranties, duct work and the total installed price. A page that shows a sample proposal with these lines helps customers compare quotes fairly.

Why do assistants keep mentioning a load calculation?

A load calculation sizes the system to the house instead of copying the old unit's size. Assistants told customers to ask for one because a poorly sized system often causes comfort problems. The page should say whether every proposal includes one and what the company measures.

Should a new system quote include duct work?

Assistants told customers to ask whether ducts are inspected and whether repairs or changes are included. Some answers noted that older homes often need duct work for a new system to perform well. The page should explain how duct work is checked and how it is priced.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 14, 2026, they answered 264 questions about a new HVAC system installation: ChatGPT 112, Claude 80, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 264 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for a new HVAC system installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
