Who AI assistants recommend for outdoor spigot repair
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for outdoor spigot repair recommendations 281 times. Here is what they needed to see on a plumber's page before naming it to fix an outdoor spigot.
The short answer
Before naming a plumber for an outdoor spigot, assistants looked for a flat price on a small job and any minimum service-call fee. Then they wanted to know whether the plumber repairs or replaces the spigot, whether the vacuum breaker is included, and what happens if the leak is behind the wall.

What people actually asked
We asked for outdoor spigot repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 281 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:
- “Outdoor spigot repair near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL 34683. Who do you recommend?”94 answers
- “Who should I call for outdoor spigot repair in 33781?”94 answers
- “Looking for someone to do outdoor spigot repair in Tarpon Springs, FL 34689 sometime this month. Any recommendations?”93 answers, asked with five different timings: sometime this month, in the next few weeks, before the end of the month, next month and in two weeks
Together, the 281 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Largo, Seminole, Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 34 to 36 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 92 and Google AI Mode 69.
Customers also call it “hose bib replacement”, “outdoor faucet repair” or “wall hydrant repair”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Do you repair the outside fixture and investigate the connected pipework?” The visible fixture may not describe the entire repair scope; access and related damage need assessment.
What your outdoor spigot repair page has to explain
A leaking spigot is usually a small job, and the answers treated it that way. Assistants told customers to ask for a flat price by phone, and warned that many plumbers charge a minimum service-call fee. A small repair can end up costing far more than expected. A page that gives a set price for a basic hose bib repair or replacement, and states the minimum, answers the first thing customers asked.
The visible faucet does not always show the whole problem. Answers separated a drip at the handle from a leak at the wall or inside it. A leak behind stucco or block, or a corroded pipe, means more work and a different price. The page has to say how you price access to the pipe and what happens when the faucet turns out to be the smaller part of the repair.
Few plumbers that came up listed spigot repair as a service, though answers called it a routine job. Assistants told customers to describe the leak when calling, such as dripping from the handle, leaking at the wall or not shutting off. A page that says what details or photos help you quote, and shows a real spigot repair, makes that first call easier.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 281 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for outdoor spigot repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
What should the customer tell you about the leak?
Assistants told customers to say where the spigot leaks when they call: at the handle, from the spout, at the wall or only with a hose attached. That detail helps the plumber judge the likely repair.
32% of the answers (89 of 281) brought this up.
Ask whether it's a leak at the handle, a dripping spout, or a leak inside the wall.
Is there a minimum service-call fee?
Assistants warned that small jobs often carry a minimum service-call fee. They told customers to ask about it upfront, and whether it is applied toward the repair.
28% of the answers (79 of 281) brought this up.
Many plumbers have a minimum service-call fee, so ask about it when you call.
Is a new vacuum breaker or frost-free spigot included?
Assistants told customers to ask whether the price includes a new vacuum breaker, the anti-backflow part on the spigot. Some also asked about frost-free or quarter-turn replacements.
25% of the answers (69 of 281) brought this up.
Ask for a quote for “hose bib replacement or repair,” and ask whether the price includes replacing the vacuum breaker/anti-siphon fitting if needed.
What if the leak is behind the wall?
Many answers told customers to ask whether the quote covers a leak inside the wall or a corroded pipe behind the spigot. Assistants said that takes more work than swapping the faucet and may need access through stucco or drywall.
22% of the answers (61 of 281) brought this up.
Ask if the quote covers a leak inside the wall, since that takes more work than swapping the faucet.
Will you repair the spigot or replace it?
Answers told customers to ask whether the plumber would fix the existing spigot or put in a new one. Some said a dripping handle is often a cheap repair, while a cracked spigot needs replacing.
17% of the answers (49 of 281) brought this up.
Ask whether they'll be fixing the spigot or replacing it.
Can you give a flat price before coming out?
Most answers told customers to ask for a flat price, often by phone, because this is usually a quick job. Assistants favored plumbers that posted a set price for a hose bib replacement.
17% of the answers (47 of 281) brought this up.
Ask for a flat-rate quote by phone, since it's a small job.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 44 of the 281 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 41 of its 92, ChatGPT in 3 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 69. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 22 answers
- Reviews it could check: 8 answers
- When the company could do the work: 7 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 4 answers
- A price or how the job is priced: 3 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 3 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and rarely found a plumber that listed spigot repair as a service. A page that names hose bib repair, gives its price and shows a working number answers both.
None of the listings I found advertise spigot repair specifically, so ask about it when you call.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 212 ChatGPT and Claude answers about outdoor spigot repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 100% (212 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 48% (102 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 6% (13 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: 4% (9 answers)
- An official license lookup: 3% (6 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 72% of its 69 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Can the customer reach a person?
Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job. Several sent customers to a contact form or a Google listing instead, and one listing had a number not tied to the company.
22 of the 281 answers about outdoor spigot repair, 22 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.
What do recent customers say?
Assistants often could not check reviews directly, and found none that mentioned outdoor faucets. They told customers to confirm reviews before booking.
8 of the 281 answers about outdoor spigot repair, 8 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 139 of the 569 conversations where it came up.
Can you schedule the job when the customer needs it?
Most customers could wait a little, but wanted it done by a set date. A spigot that will not shut off needed someone sooner. Answers could not confirm openings and told customers to ask.
7 of the 281 answers about outdoor spigot repair, 5 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 185 of the 657 conversations where it came up.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like outdoor spigot repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
How much does it cost to fix an outdoor spigot?
Assistants said a basic repair or replacement is usually a small job, and told customers to ask for a flat price by phone. They warned about minimum service-call fees, and said wall access or pipe repair raises the price. The page should state each of these.
Should a leaking outdoor spigot be repaired or replaced?
Answers said a drip at the handle is often a simple repair, while a cracked or corroded spigot usually needs replacing. A leak inside the wall needs more work. Assistants told customers to ask which the plumber recommends and why.
What is a hose bib?
A hose bib is another name for an outdoor spigot or faucet where a garden hose connects. Many answers used the two names together. A page that uses both names, along with outdoor faucet, matches how customers and assistants describe the job.
Which AI assistants did you test?

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 281 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for outdoor spigot repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
