Who AI assistants recommend for pendant lighting installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for pendant lighting installation recommendations 323 times. Here is what they needed to see on an electrician's page before naming it to hang pendant lights.

The short answer

Before naming an electrician for pendant lights, assistants wanted to know whether the job is a swap at an existing box or a new location that needs wiring. Then they looked for box support for the fixture's weight, dimmer work, layout over an island, per-fixture pricing and permits.

What people actually asked

We asked for pendant lighting installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 323 answers it produced between September 5 and October 12, 2026:

  • “Looking for someone to do pendant lighting installation in 34698 in the next few weeks. Any recommendations?”120 answers, asked with five different timings: next month, in the next few weeks, sometime this month, before the end of the month and in two weeks
  • “Pendant lighting installation near me — I'm in Pinellas Park, FL 33781. Who do you recommend?”110 answers
  • “Who should I call for pendant lighting installation in Seminole, FL?”93 answers

Together, the 323 answers covered 16 towns in Pinellas County: including Dunedin, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and Largo. Each town came up in 4 to 37 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 135, Claude 116 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “kitchen island pendant install” or “hanging light fixture install”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Can you install these pendants at the positions I want?” New locations, existing connections and ceiling finishing require different scope descriptions.

What your pendant lighting installation page has to explain

Pendants look like a small job, but answers split them into two very different ones. Swapping a pendant onto an existing ceiling box is quick. Adding pendants over an island, where there is no box yet, can mean new wiring, a new switch and patching the ceiling. Assistants told customers to say which they have, because it changes the price and the visit. A page that prices and describes both kinds of job answers that up front.

Few electricians name pendant lights on their pages. Assistants often found a company that lists lighting or chandeliers and still told the customer to ask whether it does pendants. Some companies' pages focused on panels or EV chargers, so customers were told to ask whether they take small fixture jobs at all. A page that names pendant installs and shows a finished island layout settles that.

Customers also brought their own fixtures. Many answers told them to ask whether the electrician will hang a pendant they already bought, assemble it and set its height. The page should say whether customer-supplied fixtures are welcome, and how several pendants in one room are priced.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 323 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for pendant lighting installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Is it a swap, or a new location that needs wiring?

Most answers told customers to say whether the pendant replaces an existing fixture or goes somewhere new. Assistants said new locations can need a new box, wiring and a switch, which changes the price.

59% of the answers (192 of 323) brought this up.

Confirm whether your pendants need new electrical boxes/wiring or are replacing existing fixtures — that affects price and how many pendants they can do per visit.

— Claude, asked “Looking for someone to do pendant lighting installation in St. Petersburg, FL 33713 in two weeks. Any recommendations?”, September 7, 2026

Is dimmer and switch work included?

Assistants often told customers to ask whether a dimmer is part of the quote. Some noted that LED pendants may need a compatible dimmer, and that new switch wiring can add to the price.

38% of the answers (122 of 323) brought this up.

Ask whether they’ll verify the ceiling box is properly rated for the pendant weight and whether the quote includes dimmer compatibility if you want one.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for pendant lighting installation in Seminole, FL?”, September 19, 2026

How many pendants, how high, and over what?

Many answers asked how many pendants the customer has, the ceiling height and whether they hang over an island. Assistants used those details to tell what kind of visit the job needs.

33% of the answers (105 of 323) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote covers ceiling height, hanging multiple pendants, and any new wiring or a junction box.

— Claude, asked “Pendant lighting installation near me — I'm in 33781. Who do you recommend?”, September 20, 2026

Can the ceiling box hold the pendant's weight?

Many answers told customers to ask whether the electrician checks that the ceiling box is rated for the fixture. They raised this most for heavy pendants and ones replacing a lighter light.

31% of the answers (99 of 323) brought this up.

Ask whether they’ll verify the ceiling box is rated for the pendant weight, especially if it’s over an island or replacing a lighter fixture.

— ChatGPT, asked “Pendant lighting installation near me — I'm in Tarpon Springs, FL. Who do you recommend?”, September 20, 2026

Does it need a permit?

Assistants told customers to ask about a permit when the job adds a new box or moves wiring. A straight swap of an existing fixture was usually described as simpler.

24% of the answers (79 of 323) brought this up.

Ask whether they can handle permit requirements if you’re adding a new junction box, moving wiring, or installing over an island.

— ChatGPT, asked “Looking for someone to do pendant lighting installation in 34698 in the next few weeks. Any recommendations?”, September 21, 2026

Is it priced per fixture, or is there a minimum?

Some answers noted that a minimum service charge is common for a single fixture. They told customers to ask whether the price is per fixture or per job when hanging several.

12% of the answers (38 of 323) brought this up.

Ask whether they have a minimum charge or a flat rate for a single fixture, and whether they'll hang several at once.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for pendant lighting installation in 34683?”, September 19, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 59 of the 323 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 59 of its 116, ChatGPT in 0 of its 135 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 37 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 21 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 9 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 8 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 8 answers

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job, followed by reviews of pendant work and license details. A page with a working number, the license and reviews that mention pendants answers what they kept sending customers to check.

I didn't see any that specifically advertise pendants, so mention that when you call.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for pendant lighting installation in Tarpon Springs, FL 34689?”, September 19, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 251 ChatGPT and Claude answers about pendant lighting installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 97% (243 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 58% (146 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 14% (35 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 7% (17 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 4% (9 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 83% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

37 of the 323 answers about pendant lighting installation, 37 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.

What do recent customers say?

Assistants often found no reviews of pendant work in particular, and some found mixed reviews they could not weigh.

21 of the 323 answers about pendant lighting installation, 21 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 139 of the 569 conversations where it came up.

Is your license current, and can it be checked?

Several answers said new boxes or wiring call for a licensed electrician, not a handyman. Some saw license numbers on a company's own page they could not confirm.

9 of the 323 answers about pendant lighting installation, 9 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 103 of the 142 conversations where it came up.

Your pendant lighting installation page checklist

Work through this list on your pendant lighting installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “pendant lighting installation”, “kitchen island pendant install” or “hanging light fixture install” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Describe a pendant swap and a new pendant location separately, with what each one includes.
  3. Say whether you install dimmers with pendants, and how added switch work is priced.
  4. Show a finished island or table layout and say whether you set the hanging height and spacing.
  5. Say that you check the ceiling box for each pendant and how you add support for a heavy one.
  6. Explain when a pendant job needs a permit where you work, and say that you pull it.
  7. State your price per pendant, any minimum charge, and how a set of pendants is priced.
  8. Put a working phone number and a short quote form, with room for photos of the fixtures, on the pendant page.
  9. Link to recent reviews and point to ones that mention pendants or kitchen lighting.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like pendant lighting installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

Can an electrician install pendant lights where there is no ceiling box?

Answers said yes, but a new location usually means a new box, new wiring and sometimes a new switch and patching. Assistants told customers to mention this when asking for a quote. The page should explain what a new pendant location involves and how it is priced.

Will an electrician install pendant lights I bought myself?

Many answers told customers to ask this, and said some electricians prefer to supply the fixtures. The page should say whether customer-supplied pendants are welcome, and whether assembly and setting the hanging height are part of the job.

How much does it cost to install pendant lights over a kitchen island?

Answers rarely found a real price. They said the cost depends on how many pendants there are, whether boxes and wiring already exist, and whether a dimmer is added. The page should give a starting price per pendant and say what raises it.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 5 and October 12, 2026, they answered 323 questions about pendant lighting installation: ChatGPT 135, Claude 116, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 323 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 5 and October 12, 2026. We asked for pendant lighting installation in 16 towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
