How AI assistants choose who to recommend for pipe leak repair

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for pipe leak repair recommendations 294 times. Here is what they needed to see on a plumber's page before sending someone with a leaking pipe.

The short answer

Before naming a plumber for a pipe leak, assistants wanted to know who could arrive soon and what the call would cost after hours. They also looked for whether the plumber can find a hidden leak, whether finding it is billed separately, and who repairs the wall or floor afterward.

What people actually asked

We asked for pipe leak repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 294 answers it produced between September 3 and October 13, 2026:

  • “Who should I call for pipe leak repair in Pinellas Park, FL?”105 answers
  • “Pipe leak repair near me — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL. Who do you recommend?”103 answers
  • “I need pipe leak repair tonight — I'm in Dunedin, FL. Who can actually come out?”86 answers, asked with five different timings: tomorrow morning, tonight, within the next few hours, first thing tomorrow and today

Together, the 294 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor and Seminole. Each town came up in 36 to 37 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 115, Claude 107 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “leaking pipe repair”, “burst pipe repair” or “water pipe repair”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“What does repairing this pipe leak include beyond stopping the leak?” Access, plumbing repair and restoration of opened surfaces can belong to different scopes.

What your pipe leak repair page has to explain

A leaking pipe is often urgent, and the answers read that way. Many customers had water running while they asked. Assistants told them to shut off the water at the main valve and then call for the earliest arrival window. A page that says how fast a plumber can arrive, and what the dispatcher will ask the caller to do while waiting, fits the moment the customer is in.

The answers separated three pieces of work. First the leak has to be found, which may need detection equipment when it is inside a wall or under a slab. Then the pipe is repaired. Then the opened wall or floor has to be put back. Assistants told customers to ask which of these a quote covers. The page should draw those lines and say who handles each one.

Assistants were also wary of pages that were not really a plumber. Several flagged directory and referral pages that collect the call and pass it on, so the customer cannot tell who will come. Many also could not find a phone number. A page that shows the company's own name, license and direct number answers the question of who is actually coming to the house.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 294 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for pipe leak repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

What should the caller do before the plumber arrives?

Many answers opened by telling the customer to shut off the main water valve before calling anyone. Customers asking about a pipe leak were often in the middle of one, and the first advice was about stopping the water.

55% of the answers (163 of 294) brought this up.

What does an after-hours call cost?

Assistants often told customers to ask about after-hours and emergency charges before a truck is sent. Many leaks were reported at night, so the extra charge was part of the decision.

23% of the answers (67 of 294) brought this up.

Ask whether the price is a flat rate or time-and-materials, and whether there are any trip or after-hours fees.

— Claude, asked “I need pipe leak repair tomorrow morning — I'm in Tarpon Springs, FL 34689. Who can actually come out?”, October 13, 2026

Can the plumber find a leak that is not visible?

Assistants told customers to ask whether a plumber can locate a leak inside a wall or under a slab, using pressure testing or electronic detection. Some sent customers with an unseen leak to a company with that equipment first.

17% of the answers (49 of 294) brought this up.

Ask whether they use pressure testing or electronic leak detection, especially for hidden leaks.

— Claude, asked “Pipe leak repair near me — I'm in Largo, FL 33770. Who do you recommend?”, October 12, 2026

Is it clear which company will come to the house?

Several answers warned about directory and referral pages that collect calls for urgent leaks and pass them on. Assistants told customers to ask who is dispatching, because the page did not say.

9% of the answers (26 of 294) brought this up.

Who repairs the wall or floor that had to be opened?

Some answers told customers to ask whether a quote covers repairing drywall or flooring opened to reach the pipe, or only the plumbing. Customers wanted to know who would close the hole.

6% of the answers (17 of 294) brought this up.

Ask whether it includes finding the leak and repairing any wall or floor you have to open.

— Claude, asked “Pipe leak repair near me — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 12, 2026

Is finding the leak billed separately from fixing it?

Several answers told customers to ask whether leak detection is included in the repair or charged on its own. Some also asked whether a diagnostic fee is applied to the repair if the customer goes ahead.

5% of the answers (16 of 294) brought this up.

Ask whether finding the leak is billed separately from fixing it.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for pipe leak repair in Seminole, FL 33772?”, October 11, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 42 of the 294 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 39 of its 107, ChatGPT in 3 of its 115 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 27 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 11 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 6 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 6 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 4 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and often could not confirm that anyone could come in the next few hours or the next morning. A page with a direct number and a plain statement of arrival times answers what they kept telling customers to call about.

I couldn't confirm any of them can come tomorrow morning, so call and ask for a specific arrival window.

— Claude, asked “I need pipe leak repair tomorrow morning — I'm in Largo, FL 33770. Who can actually come out?”, October 13, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 222 ChatGPT and Claude answers about pipe leak repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 98% (218 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 54% (119 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 6% (14 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 3% (7 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 2% (4 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 90% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

The checks behind every recommendation, applied to pipe leak repair

Can the customer reach a person?

Phone numbers were the thing assistants most often could not find for this job. Some found numbers only on directories and could not confirm them.

27 of the 294 answers about pipe leak repair, 26 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.

Can you schedule the job when the customer needs it?

Many customers wanted someone within hours, tonight or first thing tomorrow. Assistants said round-the-clock claims came only from company websites, so a phone call was the only way to confirm.

11 of the 294 answers about pipe leak repair, 9 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 185 of the 657 conversations where it came up.

What do recent customers say?

Assistants often could not verify reviews and said ratings came from directory sites. Reviews that mention an urgent leak and how fast the plumber came speak to this job directly.

6 of the 294 answers about pipe leak repair, 6 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 139 of the 569 conversations where it came up.

Your pipe leak repair page checklist

Work through this list on your pipe leak repair page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “pipe leak repair”, “leaking pipe repair” or “burst pipe repair” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Say what your dispatcher asks a caller to do while a plumber is on the way, in the same words they use on the phone.
  3. State your after-hours and emergency charges, and when they apply.
  4. Say whether you find hidden leaks yourself, which methods you use, and whether any part is handed to another company.
  5. Show your company's own name, address and license on the page, so it cannot be mistaken for a referral service.
  6. Say whether you repair opened walls and floors, refer that work to someone else, or leave it to the customer.
  7. State whether finding the leak has its own fee, and whether that fee is applied to the repair.
  8. Put one direct, working phone number at the top of the pipe leak page.
  9. Say whether you answer after hours and how soon a plumber usually arrives at each time of day.
  10. Link to recent reviews and point to ones about leak repairs and arrival times.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like pipe leak repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

Does a pipe leak repair include fixing the drywall or floor?

Not always, which is why assistants told customers to ask. Some plumbers repair only the pipe and leave the wall or floor to another trade. A page should say whether opened surfaces are repaired, referred or left to the customer.

Can a plumber find a leak inside a wall or under the slab?

Some can and some cannot. Assistants told customers to ask whether a plumber uses pressure testing or electronic detection for hidden leaks. A page should name the methods used and say if any part of the work goes to another company.

How much more does an after-hours pipe leak call cost?

Answers said night and emergency calls often carry an extra fee on top of the repair. Assistants told customers to ask for that charge before a truck is sent. A page should state the after-hours charge and when it applies.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 3 and October 13, 2026, they answered 294 questions about pipe leak repair: ChatGPT 115, Claude 107, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 294 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 3 and October 13, 2026. We asked for pipe leak repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
