How AI assistants choose who to recommend for roof coating
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for roof coating recommendations 239 times. Here is what they needed to see on a roofer's page before naming it to coat a roof.
The short answer
Before naming a company for roof coating, assistants first needed to know it applies coatings at all, and on the customer's roof type. Then they looked for an honest check of whether the roof suits coating, the coating product and thickness, the cleaning and repairs done first, and the manufacturer's warranty.

What people actually asked
We asked for roof coating in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 239 answers it produced between September 9 and October 14, 2026:
- “Roof coating near me — I'm in 34698. Who do you recommend?”87 answers
- “Who should I call for roof coating in Largo, FL?”80 answers
- “I'm looking to get roof coating done in St. Petersburg, FL sometime this month. Who should I get quotes from?”72 answers, asked with five different timings: next month, in two weeks, sometime this month, in the next few weeks and before the end of the month
Together, the 239 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and Dunedin. Each town came up in 29 to 30 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 104, Claude 87 and Google AI Mode 48.
Customers also call it “elastomeric roof coating”, “silicone roof coating” or “roof sealing”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“How do you decide whether a coating is appropriate for this roof?” A coating proposal should explain suitability and preparation rather than imply every roof can receive the same treatment.
What your roof coating page has to explain
Most roofers list replacements and repairs, and many never mention coatings. Assistants often found well-rated roofers and still could not tell whether they coated roofs, or whether they did homes as well as commercial buildings. Many answers ended by telling the customer to call and ask. A page that names coating as its own service, with the roof types it is done on, removes that doubt.
The answers kept saying that not every roof should be coated. Assistants told customers to ask whether their roof is a real candidate or needs repair or replacement instead, and to check for trapped moisture and ponding water first. A coating proposal has to explain how the roofer decides, without suggesting every roof can get the same treatment. An assessed project, with the product used and why, shows how that decision gets made.
Customers were told to compare quotes line by line. Answers asked for the product name, the coating type, the thickness or number of coats, and what cleaning, seam repair and primer are included. They also asked whether the warranty comes from the manufacturer, the roofer or both, and whether the roofer is a certified applicator. The page should list these the same way a good quote would.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 239 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for roof coating, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Which coating product will be used, and why?
Most answers told customers to ask whether a company uses silicone, acrylic or elastomeric coating, and why that suits the roof. Some said the choice depends on the roof material and whether water ponds on it.
62% of the answers (148 of 239) brought this up.
Ask whether they recommend silicone, acrylic, or elastomeric coating for your roof type, and request a written estimate including preparation and warranty.
What cleaning and repairs happen before coating?
Assistants told customers to ask whether the price includes cleaning, seam repair, primer and any repairs before the coating goes on. Some also asked for a check for trapped moisture first.
36% of the answers (86 of 239) brought this up.
Ask whether the price includes roof repairs and cleaning before the coating goes on.
How thick is the coating, and does it handle ponding water?
Answers told customers to ask for the coating thickness or number of coats, and whether ponding water is covered. Thickness is how customers compared two quotes that named the same product.
32% of the answers (77 of 239) brought this up.
Ask each one for the product name, the coating thickness in mils, and the warranty terms.
Is this roof a good candidate for coating?
Assistants regularly told customers to ask whether their roof is actually a good candidate for coating, or whether it needs repair or replacement. Answers said coating only makes sense on a roof that is still sound.
24% of the answers (57 of 239) brought this up.
Ask whether your roof is a good candidate for coating versus replacement, what coating system they use, warranty length, and whether they’ll provide photos of prep/primer/seam work.
Who backs the warranty: the manufacturer or the roofer?
Answers told customers to ask about the coating manufacturer's warranty separately from the roofer's labor warranty. Some said a manufacturer warranty can require a certified installer, so customers asked about that too.
21% of the answers (50 of 239) brought this up.
Ask for the manufacturer's warranty, not just the contractor's workmanship warranty.
Does the roofer apply coatings at all?
Assistants often found general roofers whose listings did not mention coatings, and coating companies that seemed to work only on commercial roofs. They told customers to ask before counting on either.
19% of the answers (45 of 239) brought this up.
Ask whether they do coatings before you count on them for that.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 32 of the 239 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 32 of its 87, ChatGPT in 0 of its 104 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 48. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 18 answers
- Reviews it could check: 9 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 6 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 3 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and often could not confirm a roofer applied coatings at all. A page that names the service, the roof types it covers and a working number answers what they kept sending customers to ask.
I couldn't confirm any of them as a coating specialist, so ask each one about coatings when you call.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 191 ChatGPT and Claude answers about roof coating, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 98% (188 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 60% (115 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 12% (22 answers)
- An official license lookup: 11% (21 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: 2% (4 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 77% of its 48 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your roof coating page checklist
Work through this list on your roof coating page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.
- Use “roof coating”, “elastomeric roof coating” or “silicone roof coating” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
- Name the coating products you use, which roof types each suits, and link to each product's documentation.
- List the preparation in every coating job, and say how repairs found during prep are quoted.
- Put the coating thickness or number of coats in every quote, and explain how you handle ponding water.
- Explain how you assess a roof for coating, and say plainly which roofs you turn down or send to repair or replacement.
- State the manufacturer's warranty and your workmanship warranty separately, and any certification you hold.
- Name roof coating as its own service, and say whether you coat homes, commercial roofs or both.
- Put a working phone number and an assessment request on the roof coating page itself.
- Link to recent reviews and point to ones from coating customers specifically.
- Show the roofing license number with a link to the state lookup, your insurance, and the product approvals you use.
Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like roof coating, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
Can any roof be coated?
No. Assistants told customers to ask whether their roof is a good candidate, since coating only makes sense on a roof that is still sound. Trapped moisture, leaks and damaged decking can rule it out. A page should explain how the roofer decides.
Is silicone or acrylic roof coating better?
Answers did not name one for every roof. Several said silicone handles ponding water better, while acrylic and elastomeric coatings can cost less. Assistants told customers to ask which product the roofer recommends for their roof type and why.
What should a roof coating quote include?
Answers about this job told customers to look for the product name, the coating type and thickness, cleaning, seam repair, primer, any repairs, permits and the warranty terms. A page that lists these makes quotes easy to compare.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 9 and October 14, 2026, they answered 239 questions about roof coating: ChatGPT 104, Claude 87, Google AI Mode 48.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 239 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 9 and October 14, 2026. We asked for roof coating in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
