How AI assistants choose who to recommend for roof leak repair
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for roof leak repair recommendations 264 times. Here is what they needed to see on a roofer’s page before sending someone with a leaking roof.
The short answer
Before naming a roofer for a leak, assistants told customers to ask whether the crew can tarp or patch the roof today, when someone will actually arrive, and whether the roofer will find where the water gets in rather than patch the spot where it shows.

What people actually asked
We asked for roof leak repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 264 answers it produced between September 4 and October 10, 2026:
- “I need roof leak repair first thing tomorrow — I'm in Dunedin, FL 34698. Who can actually come out?”96 answers, asked with five different timings: within the next few hours, today, tonight, tomorrow morning and first thing tomorrow
- “Roof leak repair near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL 34683. Who do you recommend?”96 answers
- “Who should I call for roof leak repair in 33770?”72 answers
Together, the 264 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 33 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 104 and Google AI Mode 48.
Customers also call it “roof leak detection”, “leak repair” or “roof leak fix”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Will you investigate the source of the leak before proposing the repair?” The visible interior stain and the source of water entry may require different observations; avoid diagnosing from one symptom.
What your roof leak repair page has to explain
A leak is usually two jobs. First, stop the water now with a tarp or a temporary patch. Then find the cause and make the permanent repair, which may wait days. Assistants told customers to ask for the first even if the second had to wait. They also told customers to ask which of the two a visit covers. A page that explains both steps, and how each is priced, answers that.
The stain on the ceiling is often not where the water enters. Assistants told customers to ask whether the roofer would find the source or just patch the spot where it shows. Some named flashing and underlayment as common sources. A real leak investigation, linked to the repair that fixed it, shows the roofer looks before quoting.
Assistants could not see any roofer's schedule, and many warned about lead-generation sites that route calls to unknown crews. They also told customers to be wary of anyone pushing a full replacement for a simple leak. The page should say who comes, how soon, and how the roofer decides between a repair and a bigger job.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 264 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for roof leak repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Can the roofer stop the water today?
Most answers told customers with an active leak to ask for a tarp or temporary patch the same day. They said that service was the one most likely to happen fast, even when the full repair had to wait.
66% of the answers (175 of 264) brought this up.
Ask for a temporary tarp/dry-in even if the permanent repair has to wait.
Is the leak inspection free?
Many answers told customers to ask whether the first inspection and estimate are free, and said most local roofers offer it. Customers wanted to know the cost of the visit before agreeing to it.
41% of the answers (108 of 264) brought this up.
Ask if they offer a free leak inspection/estimate — most local roofers do.
Is the visit a temporary fix or the permanent repair?
Answers told customers to ask whether a visit was for a temporary patch or a permanent repair. They wanted the repair scope, price and warranty in writing before work started.
17% of the answers (45 of 264) brought this up.
Ask whether today’s visit is a temporary tarp/patch or a permanent repair, the trip/emergency fee, and whether they’re licensed and insured.
Does the roof need a repair or a replacement?
Assistants told customers to be wary of anyone pushing a full replacement for a simple leak. Some suggested asking whether the roof was near the end of its life before deciding.
12% of the answers (33 of 264) brought this up.
Ask for license/insurance confirmation before they start, and avoid anyone pushing a full roof replacement before stopping the leak.
When will a crew actually arrive?
Assistants could not see any roofer's schedule. Many treated same-day claims on websites as unconfirmed, and told customers to call two or three and ask for a firm arrival time.
11% of the answers (30 of 264) brought this up.
I only have their websites' claims, so call and ask for an actual arrival time.
Will the roofer find where the water gets in?
Assistants told customers to ask whether the roofer would trace the leak to its source, not patch the spot where water shows. Some asked for photos of the source before approving the repair.
10% of the answers (27 of 264) brought this up.
Ask whether they'll find the source of the leak or just patch the spot where it shows.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 45 of the 264 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 42 of its 104, ChatGPT in 3 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 48. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 26 answers
- When the company could do the work: 14 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 10 answers
- Reviews it could check: 10 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm anyone could come out soon. A page with a working number, the hours it is answered and how fast a tarp can go up fills the gap they kept sending customers to call about.
I found no company with a verified booking, and most of the phone numbers come from lead-generation pages that may route you to a call center rather than a local crew.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 216 ChatGPT and Claude answers about roof leak repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 99% (214 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 48% (104 answers)
- An official license lookup: 11% (23 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 3% (7 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (2 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 83% of its 48 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

- Say whether you tarp or patch active leaks the same day, how to request it and what it costs.
- State whether the leak inspection is free, and any fee for after-hours or emergency visits.
- Describe what a first leak visit includes and how the permanent repair is scoped, quoted and approved.
- Explain how you decide whether a leak calls for a repair or a replacement, and what the customer sees to judge it.
- Say how a leak call is handled, how quickly the customer hears back and when a crew can usually arrive.
- Explain how you trace a leak from the ceiling stain to where water enters, and show a real example with photos.
- Put a working phone number at the top of the leak page, with the hours it is answered.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like roof leak repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
Can a roofer tarp my roof the same day it starts leaking?
Many answers said roofers often offer same-day tarping or temporary patches for active leaks, even when the permanent repair has to wait. Assistants told customers to ask for it directly, so the page should say whether and when it is offered.
Why does a roof leak show up far from where it starts?
Assistants said the stain inside is often not where water enters the roof. They told customers to ask whether the roofer will find the source, such as flashing or underlayment, rather than patch the visible spot.
Should a roof leak repair come with a warranty?
Assistants told customers to ask whether the repair carries a warranty and how long it lasts, and to get it in writing. A roofer's page should state the warranty on leak repairs, if one is offered.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 10, 2026, they answered 264 questions about roof leak repair: ChatGPT 112, Claude 104, Google AI Mode 48.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 264 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 10, 2026. We asked for roof leak repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
