How AI assistants choose who to recommend for roof repair

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for roof repair recommendations 264 times. Here is what they needed to see on a roofer’s page before naming it for a roof repair.

The short answer

Before naming a roofer for a repair, assistants told customers to get a written scope that says which part of the roof is being fixed, ask whether the roofer is proposing a repair or a replacement, and check the warranty, the permit and help with storm insurance claims.

What people actually asked

We asked for roof repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 264 answers it produced between September 3 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Roof repair near me — I'm in Pinellas Park, FL 33781. Who do you recommend?”96 answers
  • “Who should I call for roof repair in 33772?”88 answers
  • “I need roof repair first thing tomorrow — I'm in 34689. Who can actually come out?”80 answers, asked with five different timings: first thing tomorrow, tonight, within the next few hours, today and tomorrow morning

Together, the 264 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 33 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 128, Claude 88 and Google AI Mode 48.

Customers also call it “roof patching”, “shingle repair” or “roof fix”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Which parts of the roof will the repair address?” A localized repair and a wider refurbishment need different explanations of scope and limitations.

What your roof repair page has to explain

Roof repair covers a wide range, from a few missing shingles to new decking and flashing over a whole section. Assistants told customers to get a written scope that names the area and the materials. They also said to ask what happens if the roofer finds more damage once the work starts. A page that explains how extra work is found, priced and approved answers a question most pages skip.

Some answers told customers to be wary of anyone pushing a full replacement when a repair would do. Others noted that some roofing companies favor full re-roofs and may not want small jobs. A page that says the roofer takes small repairs, and explains how it decides when a repair is no longer enough, gives the customer a reason to trust the quote.

Storm damage ran through these answers. Customers were told to ask whether the roofer documents damage with photos and works with the insurance adjuster. They were also warned about door-to-door storm chasers and large upfront payments. The page should say how the roofer handles a storm claim and what the customer pays before work begins.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 264 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for roof repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Will the roofer help with a storm insurance claim?

26% of the answers (69 of 264) brought this up.

— Claude, asked “I need roof repair today — I'm in 33772. Who can actually come out?”, October 8, 2026

Does the repair come with a warranty?

12% of the answers (33 of 264) brought this up.

Ask for proof of Florida licensing and insurance, a written estimate, and whether the repair includes a workmanship warranty.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for roof repair in Pinellas Park, FL?”, October 13, 2026

Which part of the roof will the repair fix?

Assistants regularly told customers to get a written scope before signing. They wanted it to name the damaged area, the materials and any decking or flashing work, so two estimates could be compared.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for roof repair in Largo, FL?”, October 13, 2026

Will the roofer fix it without pushing a replacement?

Some answers told customers to be wary of anyone pushing a full replacement for a small repair. Others told customers to ask whether a roofer takes small repairs at all, since some favor full re-roofs.

6% of the answers (15 of 264) brought this up.

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 38 of the 264 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 34 of its 88, ChatGPT in 4 of its 128 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 48. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 24 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 11 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 8 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 5 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm that any roofer had an opening soon. A page with a working number, the hours it is answered and the towns it serves answers what they kept telling customers to check.

I didn't find reliable phone numbers in the results, so I haven't listed any.

— Claude, asked “Roof repair near me — I'm in 33755. Who do you recommend?”, October 14, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 216 ChatGPT and Claude answers about roof repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 96% (208 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 58% (125 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 13% (28 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 5% (10 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (2 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 75% of its 48 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

The checks behind every recommendation, applied to roof repair

Can the customer reach a person?

Can you schedule the job when the customer needs it?

Assistants could not confirm any roofer's openings, and many treated same-day claims as unverified. They told customers to call several roofers and ask for a firm time.

11 of the 264 answers about roof repair, 11 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 185 of the 657 conversations where it came up.

Your roof repair page checklist

Work through this list on your roof repair page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “roof repair”, “roof patching” or “shingle repair” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Explain how you document storm damage and what part you play in the customer's insurance claim.
  3. Say whether you tarp the same day, what it costs and how the permanent repair is scheduled afterward.
  4. State the workmanship warranty on repairs, how long it lasts and what it covers.
  5. Show a sample repair scope that names the roof area, the materials and how extra work found later is approved.
  6. Say that you take small repairs, and explain how you decide when a repair is no longer the right fix.
  7. Explain when a repair needs a permit in the areas you serve, and say that you pull it.
  8. Put a working phone number on the repair page, and say whether after-hours calls are answered.
  9. Say how soon you can usually inspect a repair and how quickly the work can be scheduled.
  10. Link to recent reviews and point to ones from repair customers, not only full replacements.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like roof repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

How do I know if my roof needs a repair or a replacement?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the quote is for a repair or a replacement, to get two written estimates, and to be wary of anyone pushing a full replacement for a small problem. A roofer's page should explain how it decides when a repair is no longer enough.

What should a written roof repair estimate include?

Answers most often listed the area being repaired, the materials used, any decking or flashing work, the price, the warranty and whether a permit is needed. The page should show which of these every estimate includes.

Will a roofer work with my insurance after storm damage?

Many answers told customers to ask whether the roofer documents storm damage with photos and works with the insurance adjuster. A page should say what the roofer does for a claim and what stays with the homeowner.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 3 and October 14, 2026, they answered 264 questions about roof repair: ChatGPT 128, Claude 88, Google AI Mode 48.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 264 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 3 and October 14, 2026. We asked for roof repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
