Who AI assistants recommend for sewer line replacement

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for sewer line replacement recommendations 285 times. Here is what they needed to see on a plumber's page before naming it to replace a sewer line.

The short answer

Before naming a plumber for a sewer line replacement, assistants wanted a camera inspection that shows how much pipe really needs replacing. They also looked for trenchless and open-trench prices side by side, permit handling, what restoration is included, and a warranty with a final camera check.

What people actually asked

We asked for sewer line replacement in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 285 answers it produced between September 7 and October 13, 2026:

  • “Sewer line replacement near me — I'm in 34683. Who do you recommend?”104 answers
  • “Who should I call for sewer line replacement in Pinellas Park, FL 33781?”95 answers
  • “I'm looking to get sewer line replacement done in 33770 in the next few weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”86 answers, asked with five different timings: in the next few weeks, in two weeks, next month, before the end of the month and sometime this month

Together, the 285 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Largo, Palm Harbor, Seminole, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg. Each town came up in 35 to 36 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 101 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “sewer line installation”, “trenchless sewer replacement”, “sewer pipe replacement” or “no-dig sewer repair”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“How much of the sewer line will be replaced and what happens afterward?” Replacement length, access method and restoration responsibilities shape the project scope.

What your sewer line replacement page has to explain

A replacement is the largest sewer job, and assistants were careful not to assume one was needed. Many answers told customers to get a camera inspection first, keep the video, and ask whether a spot repair or lining would do instead. Some said only part of the line may need replacing. A page that shows how the camera sets the length of the job earns trust before the price comes up.

The method shapes the whole project. Assistants told customers to ask for trenchless and open-trench prices side by side, and whether trenchless even fits their pipe. Answers tied that choice to pipe material, such as clay or cast iron, and to depth and soil. The page should explain which methods the plumber offers and what decides between them, without pushing customers into only one.

The answers also cared about what happens after the pipe is in. Assistants told customers to ask who pulls the permit, what yard, driveway or landscaping is restored, and what the warranty covers. Some asked for a camera check after the job as proof the new line is sound. A page that lists each of these steps reads like a full project, not just a dig.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 285 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for sewer line replacement, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

What is restored after the line is replaced?

Answers told customers to ask whether the price covers restoring the yard, driveway, landscaping or slab. Customers weighed this when choosing between trenchless and digging.

56% of the answers (159 of 285) brought this up.

Ask who pulls the permit and whether the price includes restoring your yard, driveway or landscaping.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for sewer line replacement in Seminole, FL?”, September 20, 2026

How much of the line actually needs replacing?

Assistants regularly told customers to ask whether they need a full replacement or only a section, or a spot repair instead. Some said pinpointing the damaged section can save money.

54% of the answers (153 of 285) brought this up.

Ask if they'll do a camera inspection first to confirm the issue and pinpoint the damaged section — this can save money if only part of the line needs replacing.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for sewer line replacement in Clearwater, FL?”, September 13, 2026

Is there a camera inspection, and does the customer get the video?

Most answers told customers to ask for a camera inspection before any replacement quote, and many said to get the recording. Assistants said the inspection decides both the price and whether trenchless is possible.

46% of the answers (130 of 285) brought this up.

Ask if they do a camera inspection first — this affects both accuracy of the quote and whether trenchless is even viable for your pipe.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for sewer line replacement in Pinellas Park, FL 33781?”, September 13, 2026

Are trenchless and open-trench prices shown side by side?

Many answers told customers to get prices for both trenchless and open-trench replacement. Assistants said the right method depends on the pipe's depth, material and condition, and customers should not be pushed into one.

44% of the answers (124 of 285) brought this up.

Ask for trenchless and open-trench prices side by side.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for sewer line replacement in 33713?”, October 11, 2026

Who handles the permit and the city inspection?

Assistants often told customers to ask who pulls the permit and how inspections are handled. Several said a full replacement normally needs a city permit and the contractor should handle it.

Ask them how they handle permits and inspections.

— Claude, asked “Sewer line replacement near me — I'm in 33781. Who do you recommend?”, October 12, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 36 of the 285 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 35 of its 101, ChatGPT in 1 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 22 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 13 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 9 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 5 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 3 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm that a plumber did full replacements or trenchless work. A page that names the job, its methods and a direct number answers what they kept telling customers to ask.

The page doesn't say whether they do trenchless work, so ask.

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 213 ChatGPT and Claude answers about sewer line replacement, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 99% (211 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 59% (125 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 10% (21 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 8% (17 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 46% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

The checks behind every recommendation, applied to sewer line replacement

Can the customer reach a person?

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job. Several did not list any number rather than guess.

22 of the 285 answers about sewer line replacement, 22 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.

What do recent customers say?

Assistants often could not find reliable reviews for sewer work and said ratings came from directories or the company itself. Reviews from replacement customers speak to this job better than drain cleaning reviews.

13 of the 285 answers about sewer line replacement, 13 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 139 of the 569 conversations where it came up.

Do you serve the customer’s town or ZIP code?

For a replacement, coverage means the plumber works in the customer's town and knows its permit and connection rules. Some answers found service pages for other towns and could not confirm the customer's address.

9 of the 285 answers about sewer line replacement, 9 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 350 of the 554 conversations where it came up.

Your sewer line replacement page checklist

Work through this list on your sewer line replacement page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “sewer line replacement”, “sewer line installation” or “trenchless sewer replacement” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. List which surfaces your contract restores and which are left to the customer.
  3. Explain how you decide the length of pipe to replace, and state that length in every written quote.
  4. Say that every replacement quote starts with a camera inspection, and that the customer keeps the video.
  5. Say which methods you offer, and that the quote compares them when more than one would work.
  6. Say that you pull the permit and arrange the inspection, and name the cities and counties where you do.
  7. State what the warranty covers and for how long, and say whether the customer gets a final camera video.
  8. Put a direct phone number and a quote request form on the replacement page.
  9. Link to recent reviews and point to ones from customers who had a sewer line replaced.
  10. List the towns and ZIP codes where you replace sewer lines, and the permit offices you work with.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like sewer line replacement, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

How do I know if my whole sewer line needs replacing?

Assistants told customers to get a camera inspection first and to keep the video. They said it shows whether the whole line, one section or only a spot needs work. A page should explain how the plumber reads the inspection and sets the length of the job.

Is trenchless sewer replacement always possible?

No. Answers said it depends on the pipe's depth, material and condition. Assistants told customers to ask for trenchless and open-trench prices side by side. A page should say which methods the plumber offers and what rules one out.

What should a sewer line replacement quote include?

Answers most often named the camera inspection, the method, permits, restoring the yard or driveway, and the warranty. Some added a final camera check. A page should list which of these the quote always covers.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 7 and October 13, 2026, they answered 285 questions about sewer line replacement: ChatGPT 112, Claude 101, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 285 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 7 and October 13, 2026. We asked for sewer line replacement in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
