How AI assistants choose who to recommend for shower installation
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for shower installation recommendations 295 times. Here is what they needed to see before naming a company to install a new shower.
The short answer
Before naming a company for shower installation, assistants wanted to know what the quote covers and who does the plumbing. They looked for demolition and haul-away, the waterproofing system, the permit, the kind of shower offered, and how soon installation can start.

What people actually asked
We asked for shower installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 295 answers it produced between September 4 and October 11, 2026:
- “I'm looking to get shower installation done in St. Petersburg, FL before the end of the month. Who should I get quotes from?”104 answers, asked with five different timings: in the next few weeks, next month, in two weeks, sometime this month and before the end of the month
- “Who should I call for shower installation in 33772?”96 answers
- “Shower installation near me — I'm in Pinellas Park, FL 33781. Who do you recommend?”95 answers
Together, the 295 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and Pinellas Park. Each town came up in 36 to 37 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 104 and Google AI Mode 71.
Customers also call it “shower repair”, “shower valve replacement” or “tub-to-shower conversion”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Does this service cover the plumbing, the shower enclosure or the whole project?” Plumbing installation and surrounding construction should have separately named responsibilities.
What your shower installation page has to explain
Shower installation is shared between trades, and the answers reflected that. Remodelers, bath companies and plumbers all appeared for the same question. Assistants often could not tell who would do the plumbing and told customers to ask whether that person is licensed. A plumber's page should say what the plumber does, such as the valve and drain, and who handles the tile, glass and walls.
Answers also split showers into two kinds of job. One-day acrylic systems go in fast but allow less customization. Custom tile showers take longer and depend on the waterproofing behind the tile. Assistants told customers to ask which waterproofing system is used and what the warranty covers, because failures show up later. The page should say which kinds the company installs.
Quotes were hard to compare. Answers listed the same items to ask about: demolition, haul-away, waterproofing, plumbing changes, permits, glass and cleanup. Some also warned that water damage found behind the old shower can change the price. A page that lists what is included, and how hidden damage is handled, gives the customer a quote they can read.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 295 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for shower installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
What waterproofing goes behind the walls?
Many answers told customers to ask what waterproofing system goes behind the tile and under the pan. Some tied this to the warranty, since waterproofing failures show up later.
52% of the answers (152 of 295) brought this up.
Ask what the warranty covers, since waterproofing failures show up later.
What does the quote include?
Most answers told customers to ask whether the quote covers demolition, haul-away and final cleanup. Assistants treated an itemized quote as the only fair way to compare a remodeler, a bath company and a plumber.
34% of the answers (100 of 295) brought this up.
Ask whether the quote includes demolition, waterproofing, plumbing changes, permits, glass doors, and cleanup.
One-day acrylic or custom tile?
Answers often sorted companies into one-day acrylic installers and custom tile builders. Assistants said the one-day systems go in faster, while custom tile takes longer and allows more choice. Customers were told to decide which they wanted before collecting quotes.
28% of the answers (82 of 295) brought this up.
Who does the plumbing work?
Assistants often found remodelers and bath companies, and told customers to ask who does the plumbing and whether that person is licensed. Some said a project may need both a plumber and a tile or remodeling contractor.
26% of the answers (77 of 295) brought this up.
Ask who does the plumbing work and whether that person is licensed.
How soon can installation start?
Customers often had a deadline a few weeks away. Answers said many companies need a measuring visit and then a manufacturing wait, and told customers to ask for a firm install date.
15% of the answers (43 of 295) brought this up.
Ask each one for its earliest install date, because good contractors often book out.
Who pulls the permit?
Many answers told customers to ask who pulls the permit, since plumbing changes may need one. Assistants treated a clear answer as part of a trustworthy quote.
14% of the answers (41 of 295) brought this up.
Ask who pulls the permit and whether the warranty covers both product and labor.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 29 of the 295 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 28 of its 104, ChatGPT in 1 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 71. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 21 answers
- Reviews it could check: 6 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number and relied on estimate forms or directory listings. Some could not confirm a listed company installs showers at all, which a page can state in a line.
It is listed under plumbing and bathroom remodeling, but I couldn't confirm it installs showers, so ask when you call.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 224 ChatGPT and Claude answers about shower installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 99% (222 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 69% (155 answers)
- An official license lookup: 9% (20 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 6% (13 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: 1% (3 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 65% of its 71 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your shower installation page checklist
Work through this list on your shower installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.
- Use “shower installation”, “shower repair” or “shower valve replacement” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
- Name the waterproofing method you use, and say what your warranty covers if it fails.
- List what a shower installation includes, from removing the old shower to cleanup, and what is priced separately.
- Say which kinds of shower you install, how long each takes, and what can be customized.
- Say which parts of the job you do yourselves, such as the valve and drain, and which go to other trades.
- State your current lead time from estimate to installation, and what sets it.
- Say when a shower job needs a permit and that you pull it.
- Show a phone number and an estimate request on the shower page.
- Link to your recent reviews and point to ones from shower installations.
- Say how soon you can measure, and how soon you can install after that.
Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like shower installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
Does a plumber install the whole shower or only the plumbing?
It depends on the company. Answers told customers to ask who does the plumbing and whether a tile or remodeling contractor is also needed. A plumber's page should say which parts it does, such as the valve and drain, and who handles the walls, tile and glass.
What is the difference between a one-day shower and a custom tile shower?
Answers described one-day acrylic systems as quick to install with fewer custom options. They described custom tile as slower and dependent on the waterproofing behind the tile. Assistants told customers to choose first, then compare quotes for the same kind of shower.
What should a shower installation quote include?
Answers listed demolition, haul-away, waterproofing, plumbing changes, permits, the glass door and cleanup. Some also said to ask whether the price changes if water damage is found behind the old shower. The page should say which of these items the quote covers.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 11, 2026, they answered 295 questions about shower installation: ChatGPT 120, Claude 104, Google AI Mode 71.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 295 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 11, 2026. We asked for shower installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
