How AI assistants choose who to recommend for sink installation
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for sink installation recommendations 273 times. Here is what they needed to see before naming a plumber to install a kitchen or bathroom sink.
The short answer
Before naming a plumber for sink installation, assistants wanted to know what the price covers. They looked for faucet, drain and disposal hookups, removal of the old sink, and new supply lines and shutoff valves. They also asked who supplies the sink and whether the countertop needs cutting.

What people actually asked
We asked for sink installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 273 answers it produced between September 7 and October 14, 2026:
- “Who should I call for sink installation in 34689?”101 answers
- “Looking for someone to do sink installation in 33772 in two weeks. Any recommendations?”88 answers, asked with five different timings: in the next few weeks, in two weeks, next month, sometime this month and before the end of the month
- “Sink installation near me — I'm in Largo, FL. Who do you recommend?”84 answers
Together, the 273 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Dunedin, Largo, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Seminole, Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor and Pinellas Park. Each town came up in 33 to 35 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 89 and Google AI Mode 72.
Customers also call it “sink repair”, “sink replacement” or “kitchen sink installation”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Can you install this sink with the existing countertop and connections?” A compatible fixture swap and a project requiring surrounding changes need different quotations.
What your sink installation page has to explain
A sink job can be a simple swap or a small project. Answers drew the line at fit: a like-for-like sink drops into the existing opening, while a different size or an undermount sink may need the countertop cut. Assistants told customers to ask whether the plumber handles that or a countertop installer is needed. The page should say which jobs the company takes and where its work stops.
Most answers told customers to ask what the quote includes, because the sink is only part of it. Faucet hookup, drain and trap parts, disposal reconnection, new supply lines, shutoff valves and haul-away came up again and again. A page that lists these, and says which cost extra, lets a customer compare quotes without calling.
Customers often bought the sink themselves. Answers told them to ask whether a plumber installs a customer-supplied sink and faucet, or supplies its own. Some also said to ask whether the price is flat or hourly. The page should answer both, and show a real installation that names the fixture and the connections included.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 273 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for sink installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Which hookups are included?
Most answers told customers to ask whether the quote covers the faucet hookup, the drain and trap, and reconnecting a garbage disposal. Assistants said these items can change the final price.
36% of the answers (99 of 273) brought this up.
Ask whether the quote includes faucet hookup, drain/garbage disposal reconnect, supply lines, and haul-away of the old sink.
Does the new sink fit the existing countertop?
Answers told customers to ask whether a new sink needs the countertop cut or the cabinet changed, and whether the plumber does that work. Some said a countertop installer may be needed as well.
30% of the answers (82 of 273) brought this up.
Confirm whether your job also requires countertop cutting, cabinet modification, garbage-disposal hookup, or faucet installation, since those may be separate charges.
Is the old sink hauled away?
Many answers told customers to ask whether disconnecting and hauling away the old sink is in the price. Customers did not want to be left with the old fixture.
30% of the answers (81 of 273) brought this up.
Confirm whether haul-away of your old sink and debris cleanup are included in the quote.
Can the plumber install this type of sink?
Assistants told customers to ask whether the plumber installs their exact sink type, such as drop-in, undermount, pedestal or farmhouse. Some suggested asking for a like-for-like quote when the new sink matches the old one.
28% of the answers (77 of 273) brought this up.
Ask whether they can install the exact sink type you have: drop-in, undermount, pedestal, vanity, farmhouse, or utility sink.
Are new supply lines and shutoff valves included?
Some answers told customers to ask whether new supply lines and shutoff valves are included, especially when the old ones are worn. Customers wanted to know whether that would be added on the day.
25% of the answers (69 of 273) brought this up.
Ask whether the quote includes disconnecting/hauling away the old sink and whether new supply lines/shutoff valves are included if yours are older.
Who supplies the sink and faucet?
Answers told customers to ask whether a plumber installs a sink or faucet the customer bought, and whether the quote covers parts and labor or labor only.
11% of the answers (29 of 273) brought this up.
Ask whether you're supplying the sink and faucet or they are.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 36 of the 273 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 35 of its 89, ChatGPT in 1 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 25 answers
- Reviews it could check: 8 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 3 answers
- A price or how the job is priced: 3 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm a plumber did sink installs at all. A page that names sink installation and gives a number answers both.
I couldn't confirm that any of them does sink installs specifically, and I don't have phone numbers for them.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 201 ChatGPT and Claude answers about sink installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 94% (189 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 70% (140 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 19% (38 answers)
- An official license lookup: 2% (5 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (2 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 60% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

- List the connections included in a standard sink installation, and which ones cost extra.
- Say how you check fit before the job, and whether you handle countertop or cabinet changes or refer them out.
- Say that removal and haul-away are included, or what they cost.
- Name the sink types you install, and say which ones need extra work.
- Say when you replace supply lines and shutoff valves, and how that is priced.
- Say whether you install customer-supplied sinks and faucets, and what the price covers in each case.
- Show one phone number on the sink installation page.
- Link to your recent reviews and point to ones that mention a sink installation.
- Show your license number with a link to the state lookup.
Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like sink installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
What is included in a sink installation?
Answers listed removing the old sink, mounting the new one, faucet hookup, drain and trap parts, disposal reconnection, supply lines, shutoff valves, caulking and haul-away. Quotes differ on which of these are included, so the page should list them and mark which cost extra.
Will a plumber install a sink I bought myself?
Answers told customers to ask first, since not every company does. Assistants also said to ask whether the price is for labor only or includes parts such as supply lines. The page should state whether customer-supplied sinks and faucets are accepted, and how they are priced.
Does a new sink need the countertop cut?
It can. Answers said a like-for-like sink usually fits the existing opening, while a different size or an undermount sink may need the countertop cut. Assistants told customers to ask who does that work, so the page should say whether the plumber handles it.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 7 and October 14, 2026, they answered 273 questions about sink installation: ChatGPT 112, Claude 89, Google AI Mode 72.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 273 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 7 and October 14, 2026. We asked for sink installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
