How AI assistants choose who to recommend for slate roof repair
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for slate roof repair recommendations 266 times. Here is what they needed to see on a roofer’s page before naming it for a slate roof repair.
The short answer
Before naming a roofer for slate repair, assistants first needed proof that it works on natural slate, not only tile or synthetic slate. Then they looked for photos of past slate repairs, a way to source matching slate, and a method that replaces single slates without cracking the rest.

What people actually asked
We asked for slate roof repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 266 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:
- “Who should I call for slate roof repair in 34683?”95 answers
- “I need slate roof repair within the next few hours — I'm in Largo, FL. Who can actually come out?”88 answers, asked with five different timings: first thing tomorrow, tomorrow morning, today, tonight and within the next few hours
- “Slate roof repair near me — I'm in 33755. Who do you recommend?”83 answers
Together, the 266 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 32 to 34 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 90 and Google AI Mode 64.
Customers also call it “slate roof replacement” or “slate roofing”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Do you have relevant experience repairing this slate roof?” Specific material experience and the agreed repair boundary matter more than an all-roofs claim.
What your slate roof repair page has to explain
Slate crews are rare, and most roofers' pages never mention slate. Assistants kept finding general roofers and telling customers to call and ask whether they work on slate at all. Many answers ended with a list of leads rather than a recommendation. A page that names natural slate repair as a service, with real jobs shown, is what was missing.
Answers drew a hard line between natural slate and look-alikes. They told customers to confirm their roof is real slate and to ask whether the roofer repairs true slate, not concrete tile or synthetic slate. A warranty or review for tile work did not count. The page should say which slate the crew repairs and show that work specifically.
Slate repair depends on the material and the method. Answers told customers to ask whether the roofer can match the slate's type, color and age, including salvaged slate for older roofs. They also asked about slate hooks, copper or stainless fasteners and walking on the roof without breaking pieces. The page should explain how matching slate is sourced and how the crew works on the roof.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 266 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for slate roof repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Does the roofer work on real slate?
Assistants regularly told customers to ask whether a roofer repairs true slate, not just tile or synthetic slate. Many listings named shingle, tile and flat roofs but left slate out, so answers could not match the roofer to the job.
52% of the answers (137 of 266) brought this up.
Ask if they handle real slate, not just tile/shingle.
Is the first visit a temporary fix or the slate repair?
For a leaking slate roof, answers told customers to ask for temporary protection first if a slate crew could not come quickly. They also told customers to ask whether a visit is temporary stabilization or the permanent repair.
43% of the answers (114 of 266) brought this up.
Ask for an arrival window, license number, whether they carry slate repair materials, and whether today’s visit is temporary stabilization or permanent repair.
Can the roofer show past slate repairs?
Answers told customers to ask how many slate repairs a roofer has done recently and to see photos or references from those jobs. Customers were warned that a poor slate repair can cause bigger leaks, so proof of real slate work weighed heavily.
36% of the answers (97 of 266) brought this up.
Ask how many slate repairs they've done in the last year and whether they can show photos of local jobs.
Does the estimate look beyond the cracked pieces?
Assistants told customers to ask whether the estimate includes flashing and underlayment, not just broken slates. Some told them to ask for a written diagnosis and whether flashing would be repaired rather than caulked.
33% of the answers (87 of 266) brought this up.
Ask for photos of prior slate repairs, license/insurance, and whether the estimate includes flashing and underlayment inspection, not just replacing cracked pieces.
How are single slates replaced?
Answers told customers to ask whether the roofer replaces individual slates with hooks or copper tabs and uses copper or stainless fasteners. They also asked whether the crew can do this without disturbing or cracking the slates around the repair.
27% of the answers (71 of 266) brought this up.
Ask whether they use proper slate tools, copper/stainless fasteners, and whether they replace individual slate pieces without disturbing the surrounding roof.
Can the roofer find matching slate?
Assistants told customers to ask whether the roofer can match the slate's type, color and age, and some suggested salvaged slate for older roofs. Customers wanted repairs that would not stand out or wear differently from the rest of the roof.
24% of the answers (63 of 266) brought this up.
Ask whether they can match your slate's type, color and age.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 61 of the 266 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 49 of its 90, ChatGPT in 11 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 1 of its 64. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 26 answers
- When the company could do the work: 18 answers
- Reviews it could check: 4 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 3 answers
Assistants most often could not confirm that any nearby roofer works on slate, and often found no phone number. A page that names slate repair, shows slate jobs and lists a working number answers what they kept telling customers to call about.
I also couldn't verify that any of them actually work on slate.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 202 ChatGPT and Claude answers about slate roof repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 99% (200 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 44% (89 answers)
- An official license lookup: 13% (26 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 2% (5 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 72% of its 64 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like slate roof repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
What should a slate roof repair page show?
Answers about this job wanted proof the roofer repairs natural slate, photos of recent slate repairs, how matching slate is sourced, and how single slates are replaced. They also asked whether the estimate covers flashing and underlayment, not only broken pieces.
How do customers tell real slate from tile or synthetic slate?
Assistants told customers to confirm their roof is genuine natural slate before calling, and to ask whether the roofer repairs true slate. A page that explains the difference, and says which materials the crew repairs, helps the customer book the right company.
Can a slate roof be repaired one slate at a time?
Assistants told customers to ask whether the roofer would replace individual slates rather than push a full replacement. A page should explain when single-slate repair makes sense, how the crew does it, and when a larger repair is needed.

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 14, 2026, they answered 266 questions about slate roof repair: ChatGPT 112, Claude 90, Google AI Mode 64.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 266 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for slate roof repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
