Who AI assistants recommend for smoke detector installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for smoke detector installation recommendations 310 times. Here is what they needed to see on an electrician’s page before naming it to install smoke alarms.

The short answer

Before naming an electrician for smoke alarms, assistants first needed proof that it takes this small job at all. Then they looked for hardwired, interconnected units with battery backup, carbon monoxide options, code-compliant placement, and a price that says whether the alarms are included.

What people actually asked

We asked for smoke detector installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 310 answers it produced between September 4 and October 12, 2026:

  • “Who should I call for smoke detector installation in 33755?”104 answers
  • “Looking for someone to do smoke detector installation in 33781 in two weeks. Any recommendations?”103 answers, asked with five different timings: in two weeks, next month, sometime this month, before the end of the month and in the next few weeks
  • “Smoke detector installation near me — I'm in Seminole, FL 33772. Who do you recommend?”103 answers

Together, the 310 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg, Seminole and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 38 to 39 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 120, Claude 118 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “smoke alarm installation”, “smoke detector replacement” or “hardwired smoke detector install”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Do you install the type of detectors required for this property?” Equipment selection, interconnection and the property's requirements need professional confirmation.

What your smoke detector installation page has to explain

Smoke alarms are a small job, and many electricians never list them. Assistants often found licensed companies whose pages covered panels and lighting but said nothing about smoke alarms. Their answers told customers to call and ask. A page that names the job, and says the company takes small visits like this, is often the only way an assistant can confirm it.

The answers drew a clear line between a battery swap and a hardwired system. Assistants told customers to ask whether they need hardwired, interconnected alarms with battery backup, or simple battery units. Many also asked about combined smoke and carbon monoxide units. The page should describe which kinds the company installs, and who confirms what the home or rental actually requires.

Assistants also pointed some customers to free installs from local fire departments for basic battery alarms. That makes the electrician's page more important, not less. It should say which jobs need a licensed electrician, such as new hardwired circuits or replacing an interconnected system. It should also say whether the price covers the alarms, whether every unit is tested before the crew leaves, and how old units are removed.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 310 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for smoke detector installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Hardwired and interconnected, or battery units?

Most answers told customers to ask whether they need hardwired, interconnected alarms with battery backup or simple battery units. Assistants said interconnected alarms all sound when one goes off. Customers needed to know the electrician could install the kind their home calls for.

71% of the answers (219 of 310) brought this up.

Ask whether the alarms will be hardwired and interconnected, with battery backup.

— Claude, asked “Smoke detector installation near me — I'm in Tarpon Springs, FL. Who do you recommend?”, September 19, 2026

Can carbon monoxide detection be added?

Many answers asked whether the installer handles combined smoke and carbon monoxide units. Assistants often listed carbon monoxide detection as part of a complete quote. Homes with gas appliances or attached garages were the usual reason.

63% of the answers (194 of 310) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote includes interconnected alarms, battery backup, carbon-monoxide detection, permits, and testing.

— ChatGPT, asked “Smoke detector installation near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 3, 2026

When is a free fire department install not enough?

Many answers pointed customers to free smoke alarm programs run by local fire departments. Those programs usually covered basic battery alarms for residents who qualify. Customers with hardwired systems or rentals still needed a licensed electrician.

46% of the answers (144 of 310) brought this up.

Does the electrician install smoke alarms at all?

Many answers sorted electricians by whether their pages listed smoke alarm installation. When a page did not mention it, assistants told customers to call and ask. Some also wondered whether a company would take such a small job.

39% of the answers (120 of 310) brought this up.

Ask if they'll do smoke alarm work, and whether you need hardwired, interconnected units or simple battery ones.

— Claude, asked “Smoke detector installation near me — I'm in Dunedin, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 10, 2026

Who confirms placement and what the home requires?

Assistants told customers to ask for code-compliant placement and whether the job needs a permit, especially for new wiring. Some customers needed an install for a rental, a sale or an inspection. They wanted the electrician to confirm the requirements, not leave that to the homeowner.

28% of the answers (88 of 310) brought this up.

Ask for a written quote and confirmation that the units meet current Florida code.

— ChatGPT, asked “Smoke detector installation near me — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 10, 2026

Does the price include the alarms?

Answers often told customers to ask whether the quote covers the alarms or only labor. They also asked whether the price is per detector or a flat service-call fee. Some asked whether the company will install alarms the homeowner already bought.

13% of the answers (40 of 310) brought this up.

Ask whether they charge a per-detector price or a service-call fee, and whether the price includes the alarms.

— Claude, asked “Smoke detector installation near me — I'm in Pinellas Park, FL. Who do you recommend?”, September 19, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 42 of the 310 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 41 of its 118, ChatGPT in 1 of its 120 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 21 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 9 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 7 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 6 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 4 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 3 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm that an electrician does smoke alarm work at all. A page that names the job and gives a direct number answers both.

I didn't find one that lists smoke detector installation as a specific service, so call and ask.

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 238 ChatGPT and Claude answers about smoke detector installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 99% (236 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 45% (107 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 17% (40 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 1% (3 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 88% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your smoke detector installation page checklist

Work through this list on your smoke detector installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “smoke detector installation”, “smoke alarm installation” or “smoke detector replacement” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Say which alarm types the company installs, including hardwired and interconnected systems, and how it decides which one a home needs.
  3. Say whether you install combined smoke and carbon monoxide units and how you decide where they go.
  4. Explain which smoke alarm jobs need a licensed electrician, so customers can tell when a free program will not cover their home.
  5. Give smoke alarm installation its own page that says the company takes these visits, including small ones.
  6. Explain that the electrician confirms placement and the property's requirements, and say when a permit is pulled.
  7. Say whether you supply the alarms, whether you install customer-bought units, and how the job is priced.
  8. Put a working phone number and a simple booking request on the smoke alarm page.
  9. Link to your recent reviews and point to ones from smoke alarm or other small-job customers.
  10. Show the license number with a link to the state lookup, and say what insurance you carry.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like smoke detector installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

Do I need an electrician to install smoke detectors?

Assistants said simple battery alarms often do not need one, and some pointed to free fire department programs. They sent customers to licensed electricians for hardwired or interconnected alarms. The page should explain which jobs need a licensed electrician.

What are interconnected smoke alarms?

Answers described interconnected alarms as a set that all sound when one detects smoke. They are often hardwired with battery backup. Assistants told customers to ask whether their home needs them, so the page should say who confirms that.

How much does smoke detector installation cost?

Assistants rarely found prices and told customers to ask whether the charge is per detector or a flat service fee. They also asked whether the alarms are included. The page should state the pricing method and what it covers.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 12, 2026, they answered 310 questions about smoke detector installation: ChatGPT 120, Claude 118, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 310 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 12, 2026. We asked for smoke detector installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
