Who AI assistants recommend for sump pump installation
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for sump pump installation recommendations 230 times. Here is what they needed to see on a plumber's page before naming it to put in a new sump pump.
The short answer
Before naming a plumber for a sump pump installation, assistants wanted to know what the quote covers. That meant the pit, the pump, the check valve, where the water will discharge and the electrical work. Battery backup came up more than anything else, followed by permits and the plumber's experience.

What people actually asked
We asked for sump pump installation in two different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 230 answers it produced between September 7 and October 12, 2026:
- “Sump pump installation near me — I'm in Seminole, FL. Who do you recommend?”118 answers
- “Who should I call for sump pump installation in 33770?”112 answers
Together, the 230 answers covered 16 towns in Pinellas County: including Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole and St. Petersburg. Each town came up in 4 to 25 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 96, Claude 86 and Google AI Mode 48.
Customers also call it “sump pump replacement” or “new sump pump”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“What is included in a new sump-pump installation?” Replacing an existing pump and creating a new installation should not share an unexplained flat scope.
What your sump pump installation page has to explain
Basements are rare in Florida, so a sump pump is often protecting a crawlspace, a low spot or a yard that floods. Assistants told customers to ask whether a sump pump is even the right fix, and whether a drainage solution would work better. They also said many plumbers rarely install them. A page that explains the problems you solve with a sump pump, and how often you do this work, answers both doubts.
Replacing a pump in an existing pit and digging a new one are very different jobs. Answers told customers to ask whether the plumber installs new pits and discharge lines or only swaps pumps. The page should describe both jobs separately and say how the plumber assesses the pit location, the discharge route and the power supply.
Storms are when a sump pump matters most, and storms often cut the power. That is why so many answers told customers to ask about a battery backup. They also asked where the discharge line ends and whether a permit is needed. A project example that shows the existing setup and the work installed makes all of this concrete.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 230 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for sump pump installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Does the install include a battery backup?
Battery backup came up in most answers for this job. Assistants told customers to ask whether the quote includes one, since storms knock out power when the pump is needed most.
73% of the answers (168 of 230) brought this up.
Ask for a battery backup, since storms often knock out power when you need the pump most.
Where will the pumped water go?
Many answers told customers to ask where the discharge line will run and end. Some said it is a common problem on tight lots and that water must be directed away from the foundation.
46% of the answers (105 of 230) brought this up.
Ask whether they handle permits, where the discharge line will terminate, whether they include a check valve, and whether a battery backup makes sense for your flood risk.
Has the plumber done this often, and is it the right fix?
Answers noted that sump pumps are uncommon in Florida and that many plumbers rarely install them. They told customers to ask how many the plumber installs and whether a pump or a drainage fix suits the problem.
31% of the answers (72 of 230) brought this up.
Many plumbers don't do these jobs often, so ask each one how many they've installed.
Is it a replacement or a new pit?
Assistants told customers to ask whether the plumber installs new pits and discharge lines or only replaces existing pumps. Answers said that difference changes the job and the price a great deal.
19% of the answers (44 of 230) brought this up.
Ask whether they install new sump pits/discharge lines or only replace existing pumps, since that makes a big difference.
What does the quote include?
Assistants told customers to get an itemized written quote covering the pit, pump, check valve, discharge line and electrical work. Without that list, quotes from different plumbers could not be compared.
18% of the answers (41 of 230) brought this up.
Ask for an itemized estimate covering the pump, basin, check valve, discharge routing, electrical work, and battery backup if needed.
Does the job need a permit, and who gets it?
Many answers told customers to ask whether the job needs a permit and whether the plumber handles it. Some pointed customers to their town's building office to check.
11% of the answers (25 of 230) brought this up.
Ask whether the quote includes a permit, where the discharge line will run, and a battery backup.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 48 of the 230 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 48 of its 86, ChatGPT in 0 of its 96 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 48. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 29 answers
- Reviews it could check: 15 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 6 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 3 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm that a plumber installs sump pumps at all. A page that names the job, describes what is installed and lists a working number answers what customers were sent to check.
I didn't confirm that either one installs sump pumps.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 182 ChatGPT and Claude answers about sump pump installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 97% (177 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 62% (113 answers)
- An official license lookup: 4% (8 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 3% (5 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (1 answer)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 77% of its 48 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like sump pump installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
What is included in a sump pump installation?
Answers about this job most often listed the pit or basin, the pump, a check valve, the discharge line, electrical work, any permit and a battery backup. A page that says which of these the price includes lets a customer compare plumbers fairly.
Do I need a battery backup for a sump pump?
Many answers told customers to ask about one, because storms often cut power when the pump is needed most. A plumber's page should explain when it recommends a backup and how that changes the price.
Does a sump pump installation need a permit?
Assistants told customers to ask, and some sent them to their town's building office. The answer depends on the location and the work. The page should say whether the plumber checks the requirement and pulls the permit.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 7 and October 12, 2026, they answered 230 questions about sump pump installation: ChatGPT 96, Claude 86, Google AI Mode 48.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 230 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 7 and October 12, 2026. We asked for sump pump installation in 16 towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
