How AI assistants choose who to recommend for sump pump repair
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for sump pump repair recommendations 255 times. Here is what they needed to see on a plumber's page before sending someone out to fix a sump pump.
The short answer
Before naming a plumber for sump pump repair, assistants first needed to know it works on sump pumps at all. Then they looked for how soon someone can arrive, the visit fee, whether the whole system gets checked and whether a replacement pump is on the truck.

What people actually asked
We asked for sump pump repair in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 255 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:
- “Sump pump repair near me — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL 33713. Who do you recommend?”88 answers
- “I need sump pump repair today — I'm in 34689. Who can actually come out?”87 answers, asked with five different timings: today, tonight, tomorrow morning, first thing tomorrow and within the next few hours
- “Who should I call for sump pump repair in 33781?”80 answers
Together, the 255 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and Clearwater. Each town came up in 31 to 32 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 87 and Google AI Mode 56.
Customers also call it “sump pump fix” or “sump pump service”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Do you investigate the pump, controls and discharge arrangement?” A pump symptom does not establish which part of the system needs attention.
What your sump pump repair page has to explain
Sump pumps are less common in Florida homes, and the answers showed it. Assistants often found general plumbers, drain companies and well pump shops, and could not tell which of them repairs sump pumps. Many told customers to ask whether the plumber works on them regularly, and on their pump type. A page that names sump pump repair and the pump types it services removes that first doubt.
A failing sump pump is often urgent, so the answers focused on who can actually come out. Customers were told to ask for a real arrival window, the emergency or weekend fee and the diagnostic fee. Assistants could rarely confirm anyone's schedule. The page should say when the plumber takes sump pump calls and what a visit costs at each time of day.
A pump symptom does not show which part has failed. Assistants told customers to ask whether the visit checks the float switch, check valve, discharge line and backup power, not only the motor. They also asked whether the plumber can replace the pump on the same visit. A page that describes what the inspection covers, with a real repair example, shows the customer what they are paying for.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 255 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for sump pump repair, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
What does the visit cost, and does it count toward the repair?
Assistants told customers to ask for the diagnostic or dispatch fee before booking, and whether it is applied to the repair. They also raised emergency and weekend fees for urgent calls.
29% of the answers (73 of 255) brought this up.
Ask for the diagnostic or trip fee and whether it's applied to the repair.
Is a battery backup part of the conversation?
Assistants often told customers to ask about a battery backup, because storms knock out power when the pump is needed most. Some asked whether the plumber tests the backup during the repair visit.
23% of the answers (59 of 255) brought this up.
Ask for the diagnostic/dispatch fee and whether repair, replacement, or a battery backup is recommended.
How soon can someone get there?
Many customers asked for help today or first thing tomorrow, and assistants could rarely confirm anyone's schedule. They told customers to call and ask for a real arrival window before agreeing to a visit.
18% of the answers (47 of 255) brought this up.
Ask for an arrival window, emergency fee, and whether they carry replacement pumps/float switches on the truck.
Does the visit check the whole system, not just the pump?
Answers told customers to ask whether the plumber checks the float switch, check valve and discharge line. Some said those parts fail more often than the pump motor. Customers wanted the cause found, not just the pump swapped.
17% of the answers (43 of 255) brought this up.
Ask whether they service your exact pump type, whether there’s a dispatch fee, and whether they can test the float switch, check valve, discharge line, and backup power/battery while they’re there.
Does this plumber actually work on sump pumps?
Assistants often could not tell whether a plumber repairs sump pumps or only lists general plumbing. They told customers to ask whether the plumber works on sump pumps regularly and on their type of pump. Many named a company only as a lead to call because of this doubt.
15% of the answers (38 of 255) brought this up.
Ask whether they work on sump pumps specifically.
Can it be fixed on the first visit?
Many answers told customers to ask whether the plumber carries replacement pumps, float switches or check valves on the truck. When water is coming in, a second visit is a real cost.
12% of the answers (30 of 255) brought this up.
Ask if they carry common pumps on the truck, so it can be fixed in one visit.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 54 of the 255 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 48 of its 87, ChatGPT in 6 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 56. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- When the company could do the work: 19 answers
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 18 answers
- Reviews it could check: 7 answers
- A price or how the job is priced: 4 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 4 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 3 answers
Assistants most often could not confirm that a plumber could come out soon, and often could not find a phone number or confirm it does sump pumps at all. A page that names the job, states when you take calls and shows a working number answers what they kept telling customers to check.
I can't confirm anyone's availability today, so call and ask for an arrival window before you commit.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 199 ChatGPT and Claude answers about sump pump repair, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 98% (196 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 47% (93 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 4% (7 answers)
- An official license lookup: 3% (5 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (1 answer)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 73% of its 56 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like sump pump repair, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 255 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for sump pump repair in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
