Who AI assistants recommend for thermostat installation
We asked Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Claude for thermostat installation recommendations 355 times. Here is what they needed to see on an HVAC company’s page before naming it to put in a new thermostat.
The short answer
Before naming a company to install a thermostat, assistants looked for signs it takes small, thermostat-only jobs. Then they wanted to know who checks compatibility, how a missing C-wire is handled, and whether setup and testing are included.

What people actually asked
We asked for thermostat installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 355 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:
- “Thermostat installation near me — I'm in Tarpon Springs, FL 34689. Who do you recommend?”139 answers
- “Who should I call for thermostat installation in Clearwater, FL?”131 answers
- “Looking for someone to do thermostat installation in 33713 in two weeks. Any recommendations?”85 answers, asked with five different timings: in the next few weeks, sometime this month, in two weeks, before the end of the month and next month
Together, the 355 answers covered 45 towns in Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Pinellas County: including Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, Tarpon Springs and Dunedin. Each town came up in 2 to 36 answers. By assistant: Google AI Mode 138, ChatGPT 112 and Claude 105.
Customers also call it “smart thermostat installation”, “programmable thermostat installation”, “thermostat upgrade” or “Nest/Ecobee installation”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Will the thermostat I want work with my existing system?” Installing a controller and confirming compatibility are separate parts of the customer's decision.
What your thermostat installation page has to explain
Most HVAC companies sell large systems, and their pages rarely mention a thermostat on its own. Assistants often could not tell whether a company would come out just to swap one. Answers told customers to ask whether a company takes standalone thermostat jobs or only installs them with a new system. A page for thermostat installs answers that before the customer has to call.
Putting a thermostat on the wall and making sure it works with the system are two separate parts of the job. Answers kept raising the C-wire, the extra wire many smart thermostats need for steady power. They also mentioned heat pump settings and multi-zone systems. The page should say who checks compatibility, when that happens and what the company does when the wiring falls short.
Customers also arrived with different plans. Some had already bought a smart thermostat, while others wanted the company to supply one. Assistants told customers to ask which the company allows and whether the price covers the thermostat or only labor. Answers also asked whether setup includes the app, the Wi-Fi connection and a test of every mode.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 355 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for thermostat installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
What happens if the system has no C-wire?
Most answers about this job raised the C-wire. Assistants said a missing one is the most common thing that turns a simple swap into a bigger job and adds cost. Customers wanted to know how a company handles it before booking.
72% of the answers (254 of 355) brought this up.
Ask whether the quoted price includes wiring/common-wire work, setup of the app, and testing with your exact HVAC system.
Who checks that the thermostat works with the system?
Many answers told customers to ask whether a company confirms compatibility before installing. They pointed to heat pumps, multi-zone systems and older wiring as the cases most likely to cause trouble. Customers wanted that check done by the company, not left to them.
31% of the answers (109 of 355) brought this up.
Ask whether the quote covers checking that the thermostat works with your system.
Will they install the thermostat the customer already bought?
Answers told customers to ask whether a company installs their brand and model, and whether it will fit a thermostat the customer bought. Some companies only install one they supply. Customers wanted to know before the technician arrived.
23% of the answers (80 of 355) brought this up.
Ask whether they'll install the thermostat you already bought or only one they supply.
Will the company take a thermostat-only job?
Assistants often found HVAC companies whose pages never mentioned thermostats. Several answers could not confirm that any company took a thermostat-only job and told customers to ask. A company that clearly does small swaps stood out from those that only sell systems.
19% of the answers (69 of 355) brought this up.
Ask whether they install a thermostat on its own or only as part of a larger system job.
Does the install include app setup and testing?
Answers told customers to ask whether the price includes setting up the app, connecting the Wi-Fi and testing heating, cooling and the fan. Some also mentioned humidity and emergency heat settings. A smart thermostat is only useful once it is set up correctly.
19% of the answers (67 of 355) brought this up.
Ask for an installed price including thermostat setup, app connection, and system testing before approving the work.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 36 of the 355 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 36 of its 105, ChatGPT in 0 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 138. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 18 answers
- Reviews it could check: 11 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 5 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 4 answers
- When the company could do the work: 3 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm that a company installs thermostats at all. A page that names thermostat installation, the towns served and a working number answers what they kept telling customers to check.
I didn't get a phone number or confirm that they install thermostats, so check that when you call.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 217 ChatGPT and Claude answers about thermostat installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 97% (211 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 58% (125 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 23% (49 answers)
- An official license lookup: 4% (8 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (1 answer)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 83% of its 138 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your thermostat installation page checklist
Work through this list on your thermostat installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.
- Use “thermostat installation”, “smart thermostat installation” or “programmable thermostat installation” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
- Explain what you do when a home has no C-wire, such as adding an adapter or running a wire, and how that changes the price.
- Say that you confirm compatibility with the customer's system, and whether you do it before quoting or at the visit.
- Name the thermostat brands you install and say whether you install customer-supplied thermostats.
- Say plainly that you install a thermostat on its own, without a larger system job, and how long the visit usually takes.
- List what you set up and test before leaving, from the app connection to each heating and cooling mode.
- Put your own working phone number on the thermostat page, with your company name and address.
- Link to your recent reviews and point to ones from thermostat install customers.
- Show your license number with a link to the state lookup and say what insurance you carry.
Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like thermostat installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?
Answers about this job said many smart thermostats need a C-wire for steady power, and older homes often lack one. Installers may add an adapter or run a new wire. An installer's page should explain how it handles this and whether it changes the price.
Will an HVAC company install a thermostat I bought myself?
Some will and some only install one they supply. Assistants regularly told customers to ask before booking, and to ask whether the price covers labor only. An installer's page should say which it allows and which brands it installs.
What should a thermostat installation include?
Answers told customers to expect a compatibility check, any wiring work, app and Wi-Fi setup, and a test of heating, cooling and fan modes. Some also asked about removing the old thermostat. A page should list what its install includes.
Which AI assistants did you test?
Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Claude. Between September 4 and October 14, 2026, they answered 355 questions about thermostat installation: Google AI Mode 138, ChatGPT 112, Claude 105.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 355 answers Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Claude gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for thermostat installation in 45 towns in Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
