How AI assistants choose who to recommend for toilet installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for toilet installation recommendations 351 times. Here is what they looked for on a plumber's page before naming it for a toilet install.

The short answer

Before naming a plumber for a toilet installation, assistants wanted to know what the price covered. They looked for removal and haul-away of the old toilet, a new wax ring and supply line, who buys the toilet, and what happens if the flange is damaged.

What people actually asked

We asked for toilet installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 351 answers it produced between September 4 and October 11, 2026:

  • “Looking for someone to do toilet installation in 34689 in two weeks. Any recommendations?”120 answers, asked with five different timings: in the next few weeks, before the end of the month, next month, sometime this month and in two weeks
  • “Toilet installation near me — I'm in 34698. Who do you recommend?”119 answers
  • “Who should I call for toilet installation in 33713?”112 answers

Together, the 351 answers covered 16 towns in Pinellas County: including Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park and Seminole. Each town came up in 6 to 38 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 144, Claude 143 and Google AI Mode 64.

Customers also call it “toilet replacement” or “new toilet install”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Does installation include removing the old toilet and checking the connection?” Fitting a customer-supplied fixture and supplying a complete replacement are different offers.

What your toilet installation page has to explain

A toilet install sounds like one simple job, but the answers treated it as a bundle of small parts. Assistants told customers to ask whether the quote covers removing the old toilet, hauling it away, a new wax ring and a new supply line. Several warned that these often show up later as extras. A page that lists each part of the job makes quotes easy to compare.

The answers drew a clear line between two offers. One is fitting a toilet the customer already bought. The other is supplying the toilet and installing it. Assistants often asked customers which one they wanted, and some said a labor-only price can look cheap next to a full price. The page should name both offers and say which one each price covers.

The flange and the floor under the toilet were where answers expected quotes to change. Assistants told customers to ask how flange repair is priced before booking, and whether a rotted floor would be fixed. Many plumbers also never named toilet installation on their page at all. A page that names the job and explains how surprise repairs are quoted answers both doubts.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 351 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for toilet installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Does the price include taking the old toilet away?

Assistants regularly told customers to ask whether removal and haul-away of the old toilet were in the price. Customers did not want to be left with an old toilet to carry out themselves.

66% of the answers (230 of 351) brought this up.

Confirm they'll haul away the old toilet and ask whether the wax ring/flange parts are included in the quote.

— Claude, asked “Looking for someone to do toilet installation in Largo, FL sometime this month. Any recommendations?”, September 6, 2026

Are the wax ring, supply line and shutoff valve included?

Most answers named the same small parts for customers to ask about: a new wax ring, a new supply line, and sometimes a new shutoff valve. Several said these often get added to the bill after the quote, so customers wanted them named up front.

64% of the answers (226 of 351) brought this up.

Confirm whether wax ring, supply line, and shutoff valve replacement are included, since those often get tacked on as extras.

— Claude, asked “Toilet installation near me — I'm in 33781. Who do you recommend?”, September 5, 2026

What happens if the flange or floor is damaged?

Many answers told customers to ask what the plumber charges if the flange needs repair. Some said this is where quotes jump, so customers wanted to know the rule before the old toilet came up.

46% of the answers (162 of 351) brought this up.

Ask for an installed price including wax ring, supply line, haul-away of the old toilet, and whether flange repair costs extra.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for toilet installation in Palm Harbor, FL 34683?”, September 11, 2026

Who buys the toilet, the customer or the plumber?

Assistants often asked customers whether they already had a toilet or wanted the plumber to supply one. Some warned that an install price may cover labor only when the customer brings the toilet, so the two prices are not the same offer.

31% of the answers (108 of 351) brought this up.

Ask if the quote includes removal/haul-away of the old toilet and a new wax ring/supply line — some "installation" quotes are labor-only if you're supplying the toilet.

— Claude, asked “Toilet installation near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL 34683. Who do you recommend?”, September 5, 2026

Is it a flat price or billed by the hour?

Assistants often told customers to ask for one flat, all-in price for the install instead of an hourly rate. A single price that names what it covers was how customers compared one plumber with another.

30% of the answers (106 of 351) brought this up.

Ask if they charge a flat rate for toilet installation or bill hourly, and whether the toilet fixture itself is included or you supply your own.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for toilet installation in Tarpon Springs, FL?”, September 18, 2026

Is the install covered if it leaks later?

Some answers told customers to ask whether the plumber warranties the install, including leaks after the job. Customers wanted to know who comes back if the base starts to seep.

17% of the answers (59 of 351) brought this up.

Ask for an installed price including removal/disposal of the old toilet, wax ring or seal, supply line, flange inspection, and whether they warranty leaks after install.

— ChatGPT, asked “Toilet installation near me — I'm in 34698. Who do you recommend?”, September 5, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 58 of the 351 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 58 of its 143, ChatGPT in 0 of its 144 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 64. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 44 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 10 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 8 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 5 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 4 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 4 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm that a plumber did toilet installation at all. A page that names the job and shows a working number answers the two things they kept telling customers to call about.

Their site doesn't list toilet installation specifically, though reviews mention toilet replacements.

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 287 ChatGPT and Claude answers about toilet installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 95% (272 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 72% (208 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 22% (62 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 5% (14 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (1 answer)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 83% of its 64 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your toilet installation page checklist

Work through this list on your toilet installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “toilet installation”, “toilet replacement” or “new toilet install” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Say plainly that the job includes removing the old toilet and hauling it away, or say what that costs.
  3. List the parts that come with every install, and name any part that is only replaced when needed.
  4. Explain how a damaged flange or floor is found, quoted and approved before the extra work starts.
  5. Say whether you install a toilet the customer bought, whether you supply one, and what each price includes.
  6. State whether the install is a flat price, and what is and is not inside that price.
  7. Say what your workmanship warranty covers and how long it lasts, in words, for both supplied and customer-bought toilets.
  8. Put a working phone number and a quote request form on the toilet installation page itself.
  9. Link to recent reviews and point to ones from customers who had a toilet installed.
  10. Give a starting price for an install, and name what it includes and what can change it.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like toilet installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What should a toilet installation price include?

Answers about this job most often named removing the old toilet, hauling it away, a new wax ring and a new supply line. Some added a shutoff valve and a flange check. A page should list which of these come with every install and which are priced only when needed.

Will a plumber install a toilet I bought myself?

Some plumbers do and some only install toilets they supply. Assistants often could not tell which from a page. They told customers to ask whether the plumber installs a customer-bought toilet and whether that price covers labor only. A page should say yes or no, and how the warranty differs.

Why does a toilet installation quote sometimes go up?

Answers pointed to the flange and the floor under the toilet. If the flange is damaged or the floor is soft, extra work is needed. Assistants told customers to ask how that work is priced before booking, so the page should explain the rule.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 11, 2026, they answered 351 questions about toilet installation: ChatGPT 144, Claude 143, Google AI Mode 64.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 351 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 11, 2026. We asked for toilet installation in 16 towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
