Who AI assistants recommend for TPO roof installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for TPO roof installation recommendations 254 times. Here is what they needed to see on a roofer’s page before naming it for a TPO roof installation.

The short answer

Before naming a roofer for a TPO roof, assistants looked for proof it is certified by the membrane manufacturer and can offer that manufacturer's warranty. Then they wanted a written scope naming membrane thickness, insulation, attachment method, drainage and permits, plus recent local TPO jobs.

What people actually asked

We asked for TPO roof installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 254 answers it produced between September 9 and October 14, 2026:

  • “TPO roof installation near me — I'm in 33781. Who do you recommend?”88 answers
  • “Who should I call for TPO roof installation in 33755?”86 answers
  • “I'm looking to get TPO roof installation done in 34689 in the next few weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”80 answers, asked with five different timings: in two weeks, in the next few weeks, before the end of the month, sometime this month and next month

Together, the 254 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Tarpon Springs. Each town came up in 31 to 32 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 104, Claude 78 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “flat roof installation”, “EPDM roof installation” or “single-ply membrane roof”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“What does your TPO installation proposal cover?” The roof assembly, preparation and related details need a defined scope beyond the membrane name.

What your TPO roof installation page has to explain

Many roofers say they do flat roofs, but assistants often could not confirm that a given roofer installs TPO at all. Some listings named several flat-roof systems with no TPO work shown. Others had TPO examples only on homes or only on commercial buildings. A page that shows real TPO projects, and says which kinds of buildings they were on, settles the first question.

Answers treated the membrane name as the start of a quote, not the whole of it. They told customers to get the same written scope from every bidder: thickness, insulation and cover board, tear-off or recover, attachment method, flashing, drainage and wind-uplift rating. A roofer whose page explains what its proposal covers makes those bids easy to compare.

The warranty was where answers saw the biggest difference between roofers. Customers were told to ask whether the warranty comes from the manufacturer, the contractor or both, and whether the installer is certified for that brand. The page should name the manufacturers the crew is certified with and say which warranties each job can carry.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 254 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for TPO roof installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

What does the written proposal specify?

Assistants told customers to get the same written scope from each bidder, naming membrane thickness, attachment method, flashing, seams and tear-off. Without those details, two TPO quotes could describe very different roofs at different prices.

47% of the answers (119 of 254) brought this up.

Ask for a written scope that covers the deck inspection, insulation, flashing, heat-welded seams and wind-uplift compliance.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get TPO roof installation done in Dunedin, FL in the next few weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 8, 2026

How are insulation and drainage handled?

Answers told customers to ask whether the quote includes new insulation, tapered insulation for drainage and the wind-uplift rating. Customers were told a new membrane over poor drainage can still hold water, so this part of the scope matters.

37% of the answers (94 of 254) brought this up.

Ask for proof of current Florida licensing and insurance, manufacturer-warranty eligibility, wind-uplift specifications, and a written scope covering insulation, membrane thickness, flashing, drainage, and tear-off.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for TPO roof installation in Pinellas Park, FL?”, October 13, 2026

Is the installer certified by the membrane manufacturer?

Assistants regularly told customers to ask whether the roofer is certified or authorized by the TPO manufacturer. Answers tied that certification to whether the customer can get the full manufacturer warranty. Many pages named no certification, so answers told customers to ask.

30% of the answers (75 of 254) brought this up.

Ask whether it's a manufacturer warranty and whether the contractor is a certified installer for that brand.

— Claude, asked “TPO roof installation near me — I'm in Seminole, FL 33772. Who do you recommend?”, September 30, 2026

Who stands behind the warranty?

Answers told customers to ask whether the warranty comes from the manufacturer, the contractor or both, and what each one covers. Customers were weighing a long system warranty against a workmanship-only promise, so the difference shapes the choice.

28% of the answers (70 of 254) brought this up.

Ask whether the warranty comes from the manufacturer, the contractor, or both.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for TPO roof installation in Pinellas Park, FL?”, October 13, 2026

Can the customer see recent TPO jobs nearby?

Assistants told customers to ask for recent TPO jobs nearby that they could see or call about. Some answers noted that a roofer's TPO examples were all homes or all commercial buildings, and told customers to ask about the other kind.

16% of the answers (40 of 254) brought this up.

Who pulls the permit, and when can work start?

Answers told customers to confirm who pulls the permit and to ask for a realistic start date. They warned that permits, material lead times and storms can push a TPO job back.

12% of the answers (30 of 254) brought this up.

Ask who pulls the permit and how long the city or county takes to issue it.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get TPO roof installation done in 33781 in two weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 8, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 30 of the 254 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 28 of its 78, ChatGPT in 1 of its 104 and Google AI Mode in 1 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 18 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 8 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 4 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 3 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and often could not confirm a roofer installs TPO at all. A page that shows real TPO projects next to a working number answers both.

I didn't get verified phone numbers from these searches, and I don't want to guess at them.

— Claude, asked “TPO roof installation near me — I'm in 33770. Who do you recommend?”, September 30, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 182 ChatGPT and Claude answers about TPO roof installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 100% (182 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 31% (56 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 18% (32 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 5% (9 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 58% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your TPO roof installation page checklist

Work through this list on your TPO roof installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “TPO roof installation”, “flat roof installation” or “EPDM roof installation” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. List what every TPO proposal specifies, and show a sample proposal with the customer's details removed.
  3. Explain how the crew assesses the existing deck, insulation and drainage, and what the proposal includes to fix them.
  4. Name each TPO manufacturer the crew is certified with and link to the certification where possible.
  5. Describe the manufacturer warranty and the workmanship warranty separately, with what each covers and for how long.
  6. Show recent TPO projects with the town, building type and roof size, and offer references from them.
  7. Say that the company pulls the permit, how long that usually takes, and how weather delays are handled.
  8. Put one working phone number on the TPO page and keep it the same on every listing.
  9. Link to recent reviews and point to ones from customers who had a TPO roof installed.
  10. List the towns and counties where the crew installs TPO roofs and pulls permits.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like TPO roof installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What should a TPO roof proposal include?

Answers about this job told customers to ask for membrane thickness, insulation and cover board, attachment method, flashing, drainage, tear-off, wind-uplift rating, permits and both warranties in writing. A page that lists these as standard parts of every proposal helps customers compare bids.

Does a TPO roof come with a manufacturer warranty?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the warranty comes from the manufacturer, the contractor or both. They tied a full manufacturer warranty to whether the installer is certified for that brand. A page should name the certifications held and the warranties each job can carry.

Is TPO a good choice for a home with a flat roof?

Some answers noted that TPO is most common on commercial roofs and told homeowners to ask whether another flat-roof system would suit a small home better. A page that shows TPO work on homes, and explains when the crew suggests something else, answers that.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 9 and October 14, 2026, they answered 254 questions about TPO roof installation: ChatGPT 104, Claude 78, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 254 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 9 and October 14, 2026. We asked for TPO roof installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
