Who AI assistants recommend for ventilation system installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for ventilation system installation recommendations 345 times. Here is what they needed to see on a heating and cooling company's page before naming it for ventilation work.

The short answer

Before naming a company for a ventilation system installation, assistants first needed to know which kind it installs. The word covers fresh-air systems, exhaust fans, attic vents and ductwork. Then they looked for proof of real ventilation work, a plan for humidity, airflow calculations and who pulls the permit.

What people actually asked

We asked for ventilation system installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 345 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Who should I call for ventilation system installation in Largo, FL?”170 answers
  • “I'm looking to get ventilation system installation done in Seminole, FL sometime this month. Who should I get quotes from?”88 answers, asked with five different timings: before the end of the month, in two weeks, sometime this month, next month and in the next few weeks
  • “Ventilation system installation near me — I'm in Clearwater, FL. Who do you recommend?”87 answers

Together, the 345 answers covered 45 towns in Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Pinellas County: including Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park and Seminole. Each town came up in 2 to 34 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 157, Claude 132 and Google AI Mode 56.

Customers also call it “fresh air ventilation system”, “ERV/HRV installation” or “mechanical ventilation installation”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“What kind of ventilation work do you actually install?” Whole-building ventilation, a room exhaust solution and unrelated cooling work should not be bundled under one vague label.

What your ventilation system installation page has to explain

Ventilation is one of the vaguest words in this trade. Answers split it into whole-house fresh-air systems, energy recovery ventilators, bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, attic ventilation and ductwork. Many asked the customer which one they meant before naming anyone. A page that says exactly which of these the company installs, and which it does not, gives an assistant a clear match.

Most companies that came up were general AC contractors. Their pages listed installation, repair and maintenance, but rarely said whether the company does dedicated ventilation work. Assistants told customers to ask before booking. Bundling ventilation under a broad heading, next to unrelated cooling work, left the question open. A page of its own, with an installation example naming the purpose and equipment, closes it.

In Florida, fresh air also brings in moisture. Answers told customers to ask how the company handles humidity, and whether an energy recovery ventilator suits the home better than a plain fan. The page should explain how the company plans airflow and which rooms and controls are in scope. It should also say what related work, such as duct or electrical changes, the quote includes.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 345 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for ventilation system installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Is the system designed with airflow calculations?

Many answers told customers to ask for a load or airflow calculation, duct design and balancing, not just an equipment price. Some suggested a duct leakage test. Customers wanted proof the system was sized for their home.

40% of the answers (139 of 345) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote includes a load or airflow calculation.

— Claude, asked “Ventilation system installation near me — I'm in Largo, FL 33770. Who do you recommend?”, September 19, 2026

Does the company do ventilation work, not only AC?

Many answers found AC companies whose pages did not mention ventilation at all. They told customers to ask whether the company does dedicated ventilation and ductwork jobs, not just equipment swaps. Few listings answered that on their own.

33% of the answers (113 of 345) brought this up.

Most local listings are general HVAC contractors, so ask each one whether they design and install ventilation.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get ventilation system installation done in Pinellas Park, FL 33781 in two weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 11, 2026

Which kind of ventilation does the company install?

Assistants regularly told customers to ask whether a company installs the exact kind of ventilation they want. They listed whole-house fresh air, energy recovery ventilators, exhaust fans, attic vents and ductwork as separate jobs. A company good at one was not assumed to do another.

25% of the answers (85 of 345) brought this up.

Ask what kind of ventilation they recommend: an energy recovery ventilator, a whole-house system, or bath and kitchen exhaust fans.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for ventilation system installation in Palm Harbor, FL 34683?”, October 9, 2026

How does the system handle Florida humidity?

Answers warned that a badly sized fresh-air system can bring a lot of moisture into a Florida home. They told customers to ask how the company would handle dehumidification, and whether an energy recovery ventilator would suit the home better than a plain fresh-air intake.

22% of the answers (75 of 345) brought this up.

Who pulls the permit?

Assistants often told customers to ask whether the job needs a permit and who pulls it. Some noted that local counties list ventilation and duct work under mechanical permits. Customers wanted the contractor, not themselves, to handle it.

16% of the answers (55 of 345) brought this up.

Ask whether it needs a permit and who pulls it.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get ventilation system installation done in Pinellas Park, FL 33781 in two weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 11, 2026

What does the written scope include?

Answers told customers to ask for a written scope listing the equipment model, duct changes, filtration, electrical work, startup testing and warranty. Ventilation jobs vary so much that only an itemized scope let customers compare them.

12% of the answers (40 of 345) brought this up.

Ask each contractor for a written scope covering airflow requirements, duct modifications, filtration, permits, and startup testing.

— ChatGPT, asked “Ventilation system installation near me — I'm in Pinellas Park, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 3, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 69 of the 345 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 69 of its 132, ChatGPT in 0 of its 157 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 56. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 52 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 17 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 13 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 7 answers

Assistants most often could not find phone numbers for this job, and many could not confirm that any company does ventilation work. A page that names the kinds of ventilation installed and gives a working number answers what they kept telling customers to ask.

I couldn't confirm that any of them does ventilation work, so ask each one before you book.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get ventilation system installation done in 34698 in two weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 11, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 289 ChatGPT and Claude answers about ventilation system installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 97% (280 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 54% (155 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 29% (84 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 9% (26 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 1% (3 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 66% of its 56 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your ventilation system installation page checklist

Work through this list on your ventilation system installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “ventilation system installation”, “fresh air ventilation system” or “ERV/HRV installation” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Describe the airflow measurements and calculations the company does before and after an installation.
  3. Give ventilation installation its own page, separate from cooling work, with a real job that names the purpose and equipment.
  4. List each kind of ventilation the company installs, with a sentence on what each one is for.
  5. Explain how the company plans for humidity when it adds fresh air, and when it recommends an energy recovery ventilator.
  6. Say which ventilation jobs need a permit, that the company pulls it, and whether the fee is in the quote.
  7. Show a sample scope that names the rooms served, the controls, the equipment and each piece of related work.
  8. Put a working phone number and a way to request a ventilation site visit on the ventilation page itself.
  9. Link to recent reviews and point to ones from customers who had ventilation work done.
  10. List the towns and ZIP codes where the company installs ventilation systems.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like ventilation system installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What is the difference between a whole-house ventilation system and an exhaust fan?

A whole-house system brings fresh air into the home and moves it through the ducts. An exhaust fan removes air from one room, such as a bathroom or kitchen. Assistants treated these as separate jobs, so a page should say which the company installs.

What is an ERV, and does a Florida home need one?

An energy recovery ventilator brings in fresh air while limiting how much heat and moisture come with it. Some answers suggested it may suit Florida homes better than a plain fresh-air intake. A page should explain when the company recommends one.

Does a ventilation system installation need a permit?

Answers often said ventilation and duct work may need a mechanical permit, depending on the county and the job. They told customers to ask who pulls it. A page should say which jobs need one and that the company handles it.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 14, 2026, they answered 345 questions about ventilation system installation: ChatGPT 157, Claude 132, Google AI Mode 56.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 345 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for ventilation system installation in 45 towns in Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
