Who AI assistants recommend for a washing machine hookup

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for a washing machine hookup recommendations 234 times. Here is what they needed to see on a plumber's page before naming it to hook up a washing machine.

The short answer

Before naming a company to hook up a washing machine, assistants first needed proof that it does hookups at all. Then they asked whether the job uses existing connections or needs new plumbing. They also wanted hoses, valves, the drain, leveling and a leak test spelled out in the price.

What people actually asked

We asked for a washing machine hookup in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 234 answers it produced between September 7 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Who should I call for washing machine hookup in Clearwater, FL 33755?”84 answers
  • “Looking for someone to do washing machine hookup in Palm Harbor, FL in two weeks. Any recommendations?”80 answers, asked with five different timings: before the end of the month, sometime this month, in two weeks, next month and in the next few weeks
  • “Washing machine hookup near me — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL. Who do you recommend?”70 answers

Together, the 234 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Palm Harbor, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Dunedin, Largo, Pinellas Park, Tarpon Springs and Clearwater. Each town came up in 28 to 30 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 104, Claude 82 and Google AI Mode 48.

Customers also call it “laundry line installation”, “washer hookup” or “washing machine plumbing”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Are you connecting a machine to existing hookups or installing new ones?” An appliance connection and new supply or drainage work are different services.

What your washing machine hookup page has to explain

Most of the companies assistants found listed washer repair, not hookups. Many plumbers did not mention laundry connections at all. Answers often ended by telling the customer to call and ask whether the company would do it. A page that names washer hookups as a service, in plain words, answers that question before the phone call.

Answers drew a sharp line between connecting a washer to hookups that already exist and adding new water lines or a drain. A handyman or appliance installer was often suggested for the first. A licensed plumber was suggested when valves were stuck or there was no proper drain. The page has to say which of the two jobs you do and how you tell them apart before quoting.

Customers also wanted to know what comes with the visit. Assistants told them to ask about new braided hoses, the shutoff valves, the drain standpipe, leveling and a test run for leaks. Many also asked whether the old machine would be hauled away. Listing these on the page, with what costs extra, gives the customer an all-in picture.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 234 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for a washing machine hookup, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Will you check the shutoff valves and the drain?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the visit covers the hot and cold valves and the drain standpipe. Several said stuck or corroded valves, or a missing drain, call for a plumber rather than a general handyman.

74% of the answers (173 of 234) brought this up.

Ask whether the quote includes new hoses, leveling, haul-away, and any required shutoff-valve or drain modifications.

— ChatGPT, asked “Washing machine hookup near me — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 13, 2026

Is it a hookup to existing connections or new plumbing?

Answers kept separating a simple connection to working hookups from jobs that need new lines, valves or a drain. Assistants told customers to say which one they had when calling. They suggested a licensed plumber when hookups had to be added or moved.

51% of the answers (120 of 234) brought this up.

Ask whether your job is a simple appliance connection or requires new water lines, shutoff valves, drain work, or electrical assistance.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for washing machine hookup in 34689?”, October 12, 2026

Do you level the washer and test it for leaks?

Most answers listed leveling and a leak test among the things to confirm before booking. Customers wanted the installer to run the machine and check the connections before leaving.

26% of the answers (62 of 234) brought this up.

Ask for the total price, earliest appointment in the next few weeks, and whether they test for leaks after hookup.

— ChatGPT, asked “Looking for someone to do washing machine hookup in 34698 in the next few weeks. Any recommendations?”, October 14, 2026

Are new supply hoses included?

Many answers told customers to ask whether the installer brings new hoses or expects the customer to buy them. Several said braided stainless steel hoses were worth asking for.

26% of the answers (61 of 234) brought this up.

Ask for braided stainless steel hoses and a leak test.

— Claude, asked “Washing machine hookup near me — I'm in Largo, FL 33770. Who do you recommend?”, October 13, 2026

Will you haul away the old machine?

Many answers told customers to ask whether removing the old washer is included. It often came up alongside hoses and price, as part of what an all-in quote should cover.

18% of the answers (41 of 234) brought this up.

Ask whether they'll haul away the old machine and whether the quote includes new supply hoses.

— Claude, asked “Looking for someone to do washing machine hookup in Seminole, FL 33772 next month. Any recommendations?”, September 30, 2026

Do you hook up washing machines, or only repair them?

Assistants often found repair shops and plumbers whose pages never mentioned washer hookups. They could not tell whether those companies took the job, so they told customers to call and ask. Many such companies were offered only as leads to check.

9% of the answers (21 of 234) brought this up.

Ask whether they do new installs or only repairs.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for washing machine hookup in Palm Harbor, FL 34683?”, October 12, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 35 of the 234 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 34 of its 82, ChatGPT in 1 of its 104 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 48. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 24 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 5 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 5 answers

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job, and many could not confirm that any company does washer hookups. A page that names the service and shows a working number answers both.

None of the listings I found says outright that they hook up washing machines, so ask that when you call.

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 186 ChatGPT and Claude answers about a washing machine hookup, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 98% (182 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 50% (93 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 41% (77 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 1% (2 answers)
  • An official license lookup: under 1% (1 answer)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 77% of its 48 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your washing machine hookup page checklist

Work through this list on your washing machine hookup page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “washing machine hookup”, “laundry line installation” or “washer hookup” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Say whether you inspect the valves and drain on every hookup, and how you price replacing them if they fail.
  3. Explain the difference between a hookup and new laundry plumbing, and say which existing connections you check before quoting.
  4. State that the hookup ends with leveling the machine and running it to check for leaks.
  5. Say whether new hoses come with the hookup, what kind they are, and whether the price changes if you supply them.
  6. Say whether you take away the old machine and what it costs if it is not included.
  7. Name washing machine hookup as a service on the page, and say whether you also install new machines.
  8. Put a working phone number and a quote request on the washer hookup page itself.
  9. Link to recent reviews and point to ones that mention a washer hookup or install.
  10. Give a flat or starting price for a standard hookup and list what adds to it, such as valves or drain work.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like a washing machine hookup, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What does a washing machine hookup include?

Answers about this job most often mentioned connecting the hot and cold supply hoses, securing the drain hose, leveling the machine and running it to check for leaks. Many also asked about new braided hoses and hauling away the old washer. The page should list which of these are included.

Do I need a plumber to hook up a washing machine?

Assistants often said a handyman or appliance installer can connect a washer to hookups that already work. They suggested a licensed plumber when the valves are stuck, the drain is missing or new lines are needed. A page should say which situations you handle.

What if my laundry room has no washer hookups yet?

Answers treated that as new plumbing work, not a hookup. Assistants told customers to mention it upfront and to get a written quote from a licensed plumber for adding the water lines, valves and drain. A page should describe that service separately from a simple hookup.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 7 and October 14, 2026, they answered 234 questions about a washing machine hookup: ChatGPT 104, Claude 82, Google AI Mode 48.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 234 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 7 and October 14, 2026. We asked for a washing machine hookup in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
