Who AI assistants recommend for water filtration system installation

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for water filtration system installation recommendations 300 times. Here is what they needed to see on an installer's page before naming it for a new water filtration system.

The short answer

Before naming an installer for a water filtration system, assistants wanted a water test first, so the system matches what is actually in the water. Then they looked for which systems the installer offers, an itemized quote, the exact equipment and the yearly cost of replacement filters.

What people actually asked

We asked for water filtration system installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 300 answers it produced between September 9 and October 14, 2026:

  • “Water filtration system installation near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL 34683. Who do you recommend?”104 answers
  • “Who should I call for water filtration system installation in Tarpon Springs, FL 34689?”100 answers
  • “I'm looking to get water filtration system installation done in Dunedin, FL before the end of the month. Who should I get quotes from?”96 answers, asked with five different timings: sometime this month, before the end of the month, in two weeks, in the next few weeks and next month

Together, the 300 answers covered 16 towns in Pinellas County: including Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Seminole and St. Petersburg. Each town came up in 6 to 32 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 128, Claude 100 and Google AI Mode 72.

Customers also call it “whole-house water filter”, “drinking water filtration” or “reverse osmosis system installation”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Which water concern is the proposed filter intended to address?” Different treatment claims need appropriate evidence; do not imply every filter addresses every concern.

What your water filtration system installation page has to explain

Filtration covers very different systems, and the answers kept them apart. Whole-house filters, under-sink reverse osmosis and softeners solve different problems. Assistants told customers to start with a water test and to buy only what their water needs. A page that names the concerns it treats, such as chlorine taste, chloramines, hardness or sulfur smell, and matches each to a system, answers that question directly.

Assistants were careful about treatment claims. They told customers to ask which contaminants the system targets, the exact equipment model and the filter media, and whether the equipment is NSF-certified. A page should not suggest one filter fixes every concern. It should show the product documentation for each system it installs and say which concern that system addresses.

The price of filtration continues after the install. Answers told customers to ask about replacement filters, media changes and service plans, and whether the first filter change is included. The page should state those ongoing costs, how often filters are changed and who changes them.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 300 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for water filtration system installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Is the water tested before a system is recommended?

Assistants most often told customers to ask for a water test first, so the system matches what is in their water. Many said several installers offer the test free.

49% of the answers (147 of 300) brought this up.

Ask for a free water test first, so you buy only what your water needs.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for water filtration system installation in 33707?”, October 11, 2026

Does the installer offer whole-house and under-sink systems?

Assistants told customers to ask whether the installer handles whole-house filtration, under-sink reverse osmosis or both. They noted these systems solve different problems, so the choice should follow the test.

47% of the answers (140 of 300) brought this up.

Ask whether they’ll test your water first, whether they install whole-house vs under-sink/reverse-osmosis systems, and whether the estimate includes permits, valves, bypass loop, and follow-up filter maintenance.

— ChatGPT, asked “Who should I call for water filtration system installation in 33713?”, September 29, 2026

Which water problem is the system meant to fix?

Answers told customers to ask which contaminants a system targets and to name what bothers them, such as chlorine taste or sulfur smell. Some warned that a general carbon filter may not suit chloramine-treated city water.

41% of the answers (123 of 300) brought this up.

What do replacement filters cost each year?

Many answers told customers to ask about filter replacement and service costs, noting that ongoing costs vary a lot between systems. Customers wanted the cost of owning the system, not only buying it.

25% of the answers (74 of 300) brought this up.

Ask what the ongoing costs are, such as filter replacements and service plans.

— Claude, asked “Water filtration system installation near me — I'm in Clearwater, FL. Who do you recommend?”, September 30, 2026

Does the quote itemize equipment, installation and permits?

Assistants told customers to ask for an itemized written quote covering equipment, installation, permits, warranty and filter costs. Without one, installers could not be compared on the same terms.

16% of the answers (49 of 300) brought this up.

Ask for a written breakdown of the brand, filtration stages, flow rate, labor, and permits.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get water filtration system installation done in Clearwater, FL next month. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 8, 2026

Which exact equipment is installed, and is it certified?

Some answers told customers to ask for the exact equipment model, filter media and filtration stages, and whether the equipment is NSF-certified. These details let a customer check what the system is proven to treat.

10% of the answers (29 of 300) brought this up.

Ask for water testing, exact equipment model, maintenance costs, warranty, and whether permits are included.

— ChatGPT, asked “Water filtration system installation near me — I'm in Largo, FL. Who do you recommend?”, September 30, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 59 of the 300 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 59 of its 100, ChatGPT in 0 of its 128 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 72. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 47 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 24 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 13 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 5 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 4 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 4 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number for an installer, and often could not confirm it served the customer's area. A page that lists a working number, the towns served and the water test answers what they kept sending customers to check.

None of them listed 33713 specifically, so ask each whether they serve it.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get water filtration system installation done in 33713 before the end of the month. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 8, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 228 ChatGPT and Claude answers about water filtration system installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 98% (223 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 59% (135 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 21% (47 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 4% (8 answers)
  • An official license lookup: under 1% (2 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 75% of its 72 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

The checks behind every recommendation, applied to water filtration system installation

Can the customer reach a person?

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job. Many answers linked company pages instead and told customers to find the number there.

47 of the 300 answers about water filtration system installation, 47 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.

Do you serve the customer’s town or ZIP code?

For filtration, coverage means installing at the customer's address and coming back to change filters. Assistants often could not confirm an installer served the customer's town, especially on barrier islands.

24 of the 300 answers about water filtration system installation, 24 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 350 of the 554 conversations where it came up.

What do recent customers say?

Assistants often could not verify reviews, and some listings had none yet. Reviews from filtration customers speak to this job better than general plumbing reviews.

13 of the 300 answers about water filtration system installation, 13 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 139 of the 569 conversations where it came up.

Your water filtration system installation page checklist

Work through this list on your water filtration system installation page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “water filtration system installation”, “whole-house water filter” or “drinking water filtration” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Describe your water test, what it checks for, and how its result decides the system you recommend.
  3. Name each type of system you install, what it is for and where in the home it goes.
  4. List the water concerns you treat and the system you use for each one.
  5. State what replacement filters and servicing cost, how often they are changed and who changes them.
  6. List what a standard installation includes, what can add to it, and whether permits are part of the price.
  7. Name the equipment you install and link its product documentation or certification for the concern it treats.
  8. Put a working phone number and a way to book a water test on the filtration page.

  10. Link to your recent reviews and point to ones about filtration installs.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like water filtration system installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

Should my water be tested before a filtration system is installed?

Assistants told customers to ask for a water test first, so they buy only what their water needs. Many installers offer one free. A page that describes the test and how it shapes the recommendation shows the installer is matching the system to the water.

What is the difference between a whole-house filter and reverse osmosis?

Answers said they solve different problems. A whole-house filter treats all the water entering the home, while reverse osmosis usually sits under one sink for drinking water. The page should say which concern each system addresses.

How much do replacement filters cost?

Assistants told customers to ask, because ongoing costs vary a lot between systems. A page should state the yearly cost of filters and service for each system it installs, and whether the first filter change is included.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 9 and October 14, 2026, they answered 300 questions about water filtration system installation: ChatGPT 128, Claude 100, Google AI Mode 72.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 300 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 9 and October 14, 2026. We asked for water filtration system installation in 16 towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
