Who AI assistants recommend for water shut-off valve replacement
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for water shut-off valve replacement recommendations 270 times. Here is what they needed to see before naming a plumber to replace a main or fixture shut-off valve.
The short answer
Before naming a plumber for a shut-off valve, assistants first needed to know which valve: the main valve for the house, or one under a sink or toilet. Then they looked for whether water must be shut off at the meter, the replacement valve type, a flat price, and any permit.

What people actually asked
We asked for water shut-off valve replacement in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 270 answers it produced between September 6 and October 13, 2026:
- “Water shut-off valve replacement near me — I'm in 34698. Who do you recommend?”96 answers
- “Who should I call for water shut-off valve replacement in 33772?”95 answers
- “Looking for someone to do water shut-off valve replacement in Palm Harbor, FL in the next few weeks. Any recommendations?”79 answers, asked with five different timings: in two weeks, before the end of the month, next month, in the next few weeks and sometime this month
Together, the 270 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Largo and Seminole. Each town came up in 33 to 34 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 104, Claude 95 and Google AI Mode 71.
Customers also call it “main shut-off valve repair” or “shut-off valve installation”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“Which shut-off valve needs replacement and what interruption should I expect?” A fixture valve and a main shut-off involve different access and coordination questions.
What your water shut-off valve replacement page has to explain
The same words cover two very different jobs. A fixture valve under a sink is a short visit. A main shut-off may mean turning water off at the meter or the street, and sometimes working with the city. Assistants told customers to say which valve they meant when they called. A page that separates the two, and says what each involves, answers that first.
For the main valve, answers kept asking who turns the water off. When the old valve is the one failing, water has to be shut off at the meter or the street, and some utilities do that themselves. The page should say whether the company arranges that shutoff and how long the house is usually without water.
Answers also named the replacement. Many told customers to ask for a quarter-turn ball valve instead of an old gate valve. Others said to ask whether a seized or corroded valve can be handled, and whether the other valves are tested during the visit. A page that describes a real replacement, with the valve location and the work done, shows all of this.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 270 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for water shut-off valve replacement, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Is it the main valve or a fixture valve?
Most answers told customers to say whether they meant the main valve for the house or a valve under a sink or toilet. Assistants said the two differ in access, price and whether water must be shut off outside.
48% of the answers (130 of 270) brought this up.
Ask for a quote for “main water shut-off valve replacement” or “fixture shut-off valve replacement,” depending on which valve it is.
Does water have to be shut off at the meter or street?
Many answers told customers to ask whether the plumber will shut water off at the meter or street, and whether the city must do it. Some said to check which side of the meter the valve sits on.
39% of the answers (104 of 270) brought this up.
Ask whether they'll shut off the water at the street or meter, in case your main valve is the one that's failing.
What kind of valve goes in?
Many answers told customers to ask for a quarter-turn or full-port ball valve rather than an old gate valve. Assistants described ball valves as more reliable over time.
26% of the answers (69 of 270) brought this up.
Ask whether the quote includes shutting off water at the meter, permits if required, and replacing the valve with a full-port ball valve.
Can a seized or corroded valve be handled?
Some answers told customers to ask whether the plumber can deal with a seized valve or corroded pipe. Others said the price changes when the pipe has to be cut behind a wall or slab.
22% of the answers (60 of 270) brought this up.
Is the price flat or hourly?
Answers told customers to ask for a flat price before anyone comes out, and whether there is a trip fee. Some said a plumber can often estimate this job over the phone, especially with a photo of the valve.
17% of the answers (47 of 270) brought this up.
Ask whether they charge a flat rate or hourly plus a trip fee.
Does the job need a permit?
Some answers told customers to ask whether work on the main line needs a permit, and said local rules vary. Several assistants could not confirm the rule for the customer's town.
6% of the answers (15 of 270) brought this up.
Ask whether a permit is needed for work on the main line.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 42 of the 270 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 37 of its 95, ChatGPT in 5 of its 104 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 71. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 18 answers
- A price or how the job is priced: 13 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 7 answers
- Reviews it could check: 7 answers
- When the company could do the work: 6 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number or a price. Many could not confirm a plumber did valve replacements at all, so naming the job on its own page answers both questions.
I didn't find anyone who specifically advertises shut-off valve replacement, but this is routine work for any licensed plumber.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 199 ChatGPT and Claude answers about water shut-off valve replacement, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 97% (193 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 59% (117 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 13% (25 answers)
- An official license lookup: 5% (9 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (1 answer)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 80% of its 71 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like water shut-off valve replacement, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
What is the difference between a main shut-off valve and a fixture valve?
A fixture valve controls water to one sink or toilet. The main valve controls water to the whole house. Answers said replacing the main may mean shutting water off at the meter or street, so the page should explain the two jobs separately.
Will my water be off during a shut-off valve replacement?
For a main valve, usually yes. Answers told customers to ask whether the plumber shuts water off at the meter or street, and whether the utility must be involved. The page should say how the company arranges this and how long the water is usually off.
What kind of valve should replace an old shut-off valve?
Many answers told customers to ask for a quarter-turn ball valve, often full-port, instead of an old gate valve. Assistants described ball valves as more reliable. The page should name the valve the company installs and say why.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 6 and October 13, 2026, they answered 270 questions about water shut-off valve replacement: ChatGPT 104, Claude 95, Google AI Mode 71.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 270 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 6 and October 13, 2026. We asked for water shut-off valve replacement in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
