Who AI assistants recommend for water softener installation
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for water softener installation recommendations 272 times. Here is what they needed to see on an installer's page before naming it for a new water softener.
The short answer
Before naming an installer for a water softener, assistants wanted to know whether it tests the water and sizes the system from the result. Then they looked for what the installed price covers, the warranty on parts and labor, and the ongoing cost of salt and service.

What people actually asked
We asked for water softener installation in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 272 answers it produced between September 7 and October 14, 2026:
- “Who should I call for water softener installation in 34689?”101 answers
- “I'm looking to get water softener installation done in 33755 before the end of the month. Who should I get quotes from?”88 answers, asked with five different timings: sometime this month, before the end of the month, in two weeks, in the next few weeks and next month
- “Water softener installation near me — I'm in 34683. Who do you recommend?”83 answers
Together, the 272 answers covered eight towns in Pinellas County: Palm Harbor, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, Largo, Seminole, Pinellas Park and Clearwater. Each town came up in 32 to 35 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 112, Claude 96 and Google AI Mode 64.
Customers also call it “water softener service”, “water conditioner installation” or “hard water treatment”, so use those words on the page as well.
The question underneath all of them
“What information do you need before proposing a water softener?” The page should distinguish the customer's water concern from the equipment recommendation.
What your water softener installation page has to explain
The answers drew a clear line between the customer's water problem and the equipment sold to fix it. Assistants told customers to ask for a hardness test before any quote, and for the reading itself, so they could check the size recommended. Some warned against installers who quote blind. A page that describes the test, what it measures and how the result decides the system earns trust before the sale.
Softener quotes are hard to compare because they leave out different pieces. Answers told customers to ask whether the price includes the bypass valve, the drain connection, electrical work, a permit and haul-away of an old unit. The page should list what a standard installation includes, and say whether the home needs new plumbing when it has no softener loop.
The cost does not end at installation. Assistants told customers to ask about salt delivery, service plans and whether the system is bought or rented. They also asked whether it is salt-based or salt-free, since the two work differently. A page that states the system type, the ongoing costs and who services it afterward answers what customers were told to ask.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 272 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for water softener installation, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Is the water tested before a system is recommended?
Assistants most often told customers to ask for a water hardness test before any recommendation. Some said a legitimate installer tests rather than quoting blind, and that local hardness varies by neighborhood.
68% of the answers (185 of 272) brought this up.
Ask whether they test your water hardness on-site before recommending a system size — a legit installer should do this rather than quoting blind.
What will salt and service cost after installation?
Answers regularly told customers to ask about ongoing salt and service costs. Customers wanted the full cost of owning the system, not just the price of putting it in.
35% of the answers (95 of 272) brought this up.
Ask whether the quote includes the salt and the ongoing service or maintenance plan.
Is it salt-based or salt-free, bought or rented?
Some answers told customers to ask whether the system is a salt-based softener or a salt-free conditioner, and whether it is bought or rented. They noted the two types work differently.
32% of the answers (86 of 272) brought this up.
Ask whether it's a salt-based softener or a salt-free conditioner, and how big a system your household needs.
What does the installed price include?
Many answers told customers to ask whether the quote includes the bypass valve, drain connection, electrical work and any permit. These pieces decided whether two installed prices were really the same job.
26% of the answers (70 of 272) brought this up.
Ask whether the install includes a bypass valve, a drain connection to code, and any permit.
How is the system sized and which equipment is used?
Assistants told customers to ask for the system's capacity and brand, and how it was sized to the household. Some asked for the hardness reading so the customer could check the recommendation.
24% of the answers (64 of 272) brought this up.
Ask for the hardness reading so you can check the size of system they recommend.
What does the warranty cover?
Assistants told customers to ask how long the warranty lasts and whether it covers the tank, the control valve and the labor. Some asked for both equipment and labor warranties in writing.
12% of the answers (34 of 272) brought this up.
Confirm the installer is licensed and insured, and ask what the warranty covers for parts and labor.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 35 of the 272 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 35 of its 96, ChatGPT in 0 of its 112 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 64. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 27 answers
- Reviews it could check: 8 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 5 answers
Assistants most often could not find a phone number for an installer, and some could not confirm a plumber installs softeners at all. A page that names the job, describes the water test and lists a working number answers what they sent customers to look up.
It's a general plumber, and I didn't see softener installation listed, so ask whether they do it.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 208 ChatGPT and Claude answers about water softener installation, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 97% (202 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 71% (147 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: 3% (6 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 3% (6 answers)
- An official license lookup: 1% (3 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 64% of its 64 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Can the customer reach a person?
Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job. Several answers pointed customers to a contact form or a directory instead.
27 of the 272 answers about water softener installation, 27 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.
What do recent customers say?
Assistants often could not verify reviews, and some profiles had none. Reviews from softener customers speak to this job better than general plumbing reviews.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For planned work like water softener installation, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
Should my water be tested before a softener is installed?
Assistants told customers to ask for a hardness test before any recommendation, since the result decides the size and type of system. Some said to ask for the reading itself. A page that describes the test shows the installer recommends from evidence.
What should a water softener installation quote include?
Answers most often listed the equipment, the bypass valve, the drain connection, electrical work, any permit, haul-away of an old unit and the warranty. A page that says which of these are included lets a customer compare quotes fairly.
What does a water softener cost after it is installed?
Assistants told customers to ask about salt, salt delivery and service plans. Costs depend on the system type and whether it is bought or rented. A page that states these ongoing costs gives customers the full picture.

How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 272 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 7 and October 14, 2026. We asked for water softener installation in eight towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
