Who AI assistants recommend for whole-house repiping

We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for whole-house repiping recommendations 280 times. Here is what they needed to see before naming a plumber to replace the pipes in a whole home.

The short answer

Before naming a plumber for a whole-house repipe, assistants wanted the edges of the quote spelled out. They looked for the pipe material, whether drywall patching and paint are included, who pulls the permit, how long the water will be off, and what the warranty covers.

What people actually asked

We asked for whole-house repiping in three different ways. Here is each one, word for word, with how many of the 280 answers it produced between September 4 and October 14, 2026:

  • “I'm looking to get whole-house repiping done in 34689 before the end of the month. Who should I get quotes from?”96 answers, asked with five different timings: before the end of the month, in two weeks, in the next few weeks, sometime this month and next month
  • “Who should I call for whole-house repiping in Clearwater, FL 33755?”96 answers
  • “Whole-house repiping near me — I'm in 33713. Who do you recommend?”88 answers

Together, the 280 answers covered 16 towns in Pinellas County: including Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Palm Harbor and Pinellas Park. Each town came up in 6 to 29 answers. By assistant: ChatGPT 136, Claude 96 and Google AI Mode 48.

Customers also call it “repipe”, “re-piping” or “whole house pipe replacement”, so use those words on the page as well.

The question underneath all of them

“Which pipes and fixtures are included in a whole-house repipe?” The phrase whole-house needs a defined boundary and an explanation of access and interruptions.

What your whole-house repiping page has to explain

Whole-house sounds complete, but the answers showed it means different things. Some quotes cover only the supply pipes and leave out drain lines, fixture reconnections or removing the old pipe. Assistants told customers to compare quotes line by line, because the totals were not measuring the same job. The page has to say which pipes and fixtures the repipe includes and which it does not.

The walls are the other half of the job. New pipe runs mean openings in the drywall, and answers kept asking who patches and paints them. Some repipe companies leave that to a separate crew or to the homeowner. The page should say how openings are made and whether patching, texture and paint are in the price.

Customers also asked how they would live through it. Answers told them to ask how many days the water would be off and whether the work could be done in phases. Many also said to ask how many repipes the company has done and for local references. A page that walks through a typical repipe, from the first day to the final inspection, answers most of this.

What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone

We read all 280 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for whole-house repiping, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.

What the assistants told customers to ask

Most common first:

Which pipe material goes in?

Most answers told customers to ask whether the plumber would use PEX, copper or CPVC. Assistants said the choice affects the price, the install time and the warranty. Some noted a company's page named only one material and told customers to ask about others.

79% of the answers (222 of 280) brought this up.

Ask whether they use copper or PEX — PEX is usually cheaper and faster to install, copper lasts longer but costs more.

— Claude, asked “Who should I call for whole-house repiping in Clearwater, FL?”, September 23, 2026

Are drywall patching and paint in the price?

This was the question assistants raised most for repiping. Answers warned that some repipe companies leave patching out and send a separate crew, which can swing the total a lot. Customers wanted to know the walls would be finished when the plumber left.

62% of the answers (174 of 280) brought this up.

Ask if their quote includes drywall patching and texturing, or if you will need to hire a separate patch contractor once the new PEX or copper lines are run.

— Google AI Mode, asked “Who should I call for whole-house repiping in Clearwater, FL 33755?”, October 1, 2026

Does the warranty cover labor as well as pipe?

Assistants told customers to get the warranty in writing and check that it covers labor, not only the pipe maker's guarantee. Some also said to ask whether the warranty transfers if the house is sold.

30% of the answers (83 of 280) brought this up.

Ask whether the warranty covers labor as well as materials.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get whole-house repiping done in Largo, FL 33770 in two weeks. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 9, 2026

Who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection?

Many answers said a whole-house repipe normally needs a permit, and told customers to ask who pulls it and whether the inspection is included. Some treated pulling the permit as a sign of a legitimate company.

21% of the answers (59 of 280) brought this up.

Ask whether they pull a county permit and schedule an inspection.

— Claude, asked “Whole-house repiping near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL. Who do you recommend?”, October 1, 2026

How long will the water be off?

Answers told customers to ask how many days they would be without water, and whether the plumber restores it each night or works in phases. For a family living in the house, this decided whether the job was workable.

14% of the answers (40 of 280) brought this up.

Ask how many days the water will be off and whether they'll do the work in phases.

— Claude, asked “I'm looking to get whole-house repiping done in Dunedin, FL 34698 sometime this month. Who should I get quotes from?”, October 9, 2026

Does the company actually do whole-house repipes?

Assistants often found general plumbers whose pages listed water line work but never mentioned full repipes. They told customers to ask how many repipes a company has done recently and for local references.

8% of the answers (22 of 280) brought this up.

Ask how many whole-house repipes they've done recently, and ask for two or three local references.

— Claude, asked “Whole-house repiping near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL 34683. Who do you recommend?”, October 8, 2026

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 59 of the 280 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 58 of its 96, ChatGPT in 1 of its 136 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 48. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 35 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 33 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 26 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 6 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 5 answers

Assistants most often could not find a phone number, and many could not confirm a company served the customer's town. A page that lists where repipes are offered and gives a direct number answers both.

I didn't find reliable phone numbers, so I left them out rather than guess.

— Claude, asked “Whole-house repiping near me — I'm in Palm Harbor, FL 34683. Who do you recommend?”, October 8, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 232 ChatGPT and Claude answers about whole-house repiping, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 100% (232 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 48% (111 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 10% (23 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 2% (4 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (2 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 65% of its 48 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

The checks behind every recommendation, applied to whole-house repiping

Can the customer reach a person?

Phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for this job. Several left them out rather than guess and sent customers to company websites.

35 of the 280 answers about whole-house repiping, 35 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 147 of the 290 conversations where it came up.

Do you serve the customer’s town or ZIP code?

For a repipe, coverage means a crew working at the customer's address for several days, plus the inspection visits. Assistants often could not confirm a company served the customer's town or ZIP code.

33 of the 280 answers about whole-house repiping, 33 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 350 of the 554 conversations where it came up.

What do recent customers say?

Assistants often found only directories and the companies' own sites, not reviews about repiping. They told customers to check Google and the BBB and ask for a nearby repipe reference.

26 of the 280 answers about whole-house repiping, 26 of them from Claude, said the assistant couldn’t confirm this. In our July–August study across eight trades, it cost a business its place in 139 of the 569 conversations where it came up.

Your whole-house repiping page checklist

Work through this list on your whole-house repiping page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.

  1. Use “whole-house repiping”, “repipe” or “re-piping” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
  2. Name the materials you install, when you recommend each, and how the choice changes the quote.
  3. Say whether patching, texture and paint are included, and if not, who does them and how they are priced.
  4. State the labor warranty and the material warranty separately, and say whether either transfers to a new owner.
  5. Say that you pull the permit, which offices you file with, and how the final inspection is scheduled.
  6. Describe a typical repipe schedule, when the water is off each day, and whether you restore it overnight.
  7. Say plainly that you do whole-house repipes, and show a recent example with the areas covered and the finish work done.
  8. Put a phone number and a way to request a repipe estimate on the repipe page.
  9. List the towns and ZIP codes where you do whole-house repipes, not only service calls.
  10. Link to your recent reviews and point to ones that describe a whole-house repipe.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For planned work like whole-house repiping, a useful opening says whether it is for an assessment or the job itself, and whether the customer’s address is covered.

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask

What does a whole-house repipe include?

It varies by company. Answers told customers to check whether a quote covers every supply line, fixture reconnections, removing the old pipe, permits, pressure testing and drywall patching. Some quotes left out drain lines. A page should list exactly what the repipe covers and what it leaves out.

Is PEX or copper better for repiping a house?

Answers described PEX as usually cheaper and faster to install, and copper as longer-lasting but more expensive. Some companies also used CPVC. Assistants told customers to ask which material a plumber recommends for their home, so the page should explain the options and when each fits.

Will I have water during a whole-house repipe?

Assistants told customers to ask how many days the water would be off, and whether the plumber restores it each night or works in phases. The answers did not give one standard. A page should describe how the company handles water interruptions on a typical job.

Which AI assistants did you test?

ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 4 and October 14, 2026, they answered 280 questions about whole-house repiping: ChatGPT 136, Claude 96, Google AI Mode 48.

Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?

No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 280 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 4 and October 14, 2026. We asked for whole-house repiping in 16 towns in Pinellas County, Florida. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
