The questions covered 41 specific jobs. The most asked here, each with its own post:

The question underneath all of them

“Which St. Pete plumber can come out soon, and will I know the price before they start?” St. Pete plumbing answers kept asking for the service-call fee, whether a camera inspection costs extra and who pulls the City of St. Petersburg permit.

What your St. Petersburg plumbing page has to explain

St. Petersburg is one of the largest towns in this research, and its plumbing answers look much like the others. Assistants seldom said nobody served the city. More often they could not tie a plumber to the customer’s ZIP code, and said the listings were city-wide. A St. Pete plumbing page should name the ZIP codes it serves rather than only the city.

Drain and sewer jobs were asked about often here, and the camera came up again and again. Assistants told customers to ask whether a camera inspection is included or extra, whether they get the video, and whether the camera fee counts toward the repair. Some said to camera the line before jetting older cast-iron or clay pipe. A page should say how drain work is priced, camera included or not.

For installs, from toilets and disposals to water heaters and repipes, assistants wanted the quote to list what is included. They asked about haul-away of the old unit, new supply lines, shutoff valves and the permit. Several named the City of St. Petersburg permit by name. The page should say which jobs need a permit and that the plumber pulls it.

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 231 of the 1,648 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 221 of its 569, ChatGPT in 9 of its 682 and Google AI Mode in 1 of its 397. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 128 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 55 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 39 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 28 answers
  • A price or how the job is priced: 21 answers
  • A license or insurance it could check: 17 answers

Compared with the larger towns: Claude said it couldn’t confirm something in 221 of its 569 answers about St. Petersburg (39%), and couldn’t confirm that any company served St. Petersburg in 28 (5%). In the eight largest towns we studied, those figures were 40% and 4% for plumbing.

In St. Petersburg, phone numbers were what assistants most often could not find for plumbers, and reviews came next. Several left numbers out rather than guess. A St. Pete plumbing page answers both with one working number and links to recent reviews.

I didn't pull phone numbers because I couldn't confirm them from these results.

— Claude, asked “Drain cleaning near me — I'm in St. Petersburg, FL. Who do you recommend?”, September 19, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 1,251 ChatGPT and Claude answers about plumbing work in St. Petersburg, FL, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 98% (1,226 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 53% (658 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 11% (142 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 3% (40 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: under 1% (10 answers)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 69% of its 397 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For an urgent job, “open now” doesn’t answer the customer’s real question: can the right technician get to this address within the next few hours?

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 1,648 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 2 and October 14, 2026. Every question named St. Petersburg or one of its ZIP codes. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
