The question underneath all of them
“Which Clearwater contractor is close by, licensed in Pinellas County and clear about the first visit’s cost?” In all four trades, answers sorted contractors by how close they were to the customer’s Clearwater ZIP code, then checked the license, the permit and the first-visit fee.
What your Clearwater page has to explain
Clearwater is one of the largest towns in this research, and its answers look much like the others. Most questions named 33755. Assistants rarely said no one served Clearwater. Instead they described where contractors sat, calling one Clearwater-based or right in the customer’s ZIP code. A Clearwater page should say where the company is and which Clearwater ZIP codes it covers.
Checking a contractor was a question in its own right here. Customers asked how to confirm a Clearwater contractor is licensed and insured. Assistants pointed to the state DBPR lookup and to Pinellas County’s contractor search. Some said insurance can only be trusted if the certificate is current when the customer hires. A page that shows the license number and offers a current certificate answers this.
The City of Clearwater came up by name, mostly in plumbing and electrical answers. Assistants mentioned city permits and the building department, and sometimes the city’s utilities for a shutoff at the street. In roofing answers, wind-mitigation reports and insurance claims came up often. A Clearwater page should say which local permits and records each job involves.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 5,681 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for home services in Clearwater, FL, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Is the contractor in Clearwater or the customer’s ZIP code?
In every trade, answers often said when a contractor was Clearwater-based or right in the customer’s ZIP code. When a page did not name Clearwater, assistants told customers to ask about their address.
35% of the answers (1,978 of 5,681) brought this up.
Is the license real and the insurance current?
Many answers told customers to get the license number, look it up on the state DBPR site and ask for a certificate of insurance with workers’ comp. Clearwater answers gave this advice in all four trades alike.
24% of the answers (1,369 of 5,681) brought this up.
I can’t honestly say a contractor “genuinely checks out” on insurance unless the current certificate or workers’ comp record is verified at the time you hire them.
Is the scope and price in writing?
Answers told Clearwater customers to get a written quote before work begins and ask whether it is flat-rate or hourly. For hidden pipe or sewer work, some also asked for photos or video.
17% of the answers (954 of 5,681) brought this up.
Ask for license number on the invoice, written scope, warranty terms, and photos/video for hidden pipe or sewer work.
Is there a fee before any work is done?
For repairs in all four trades, assistants told customers to ask the trip, dispatch or diagnostic fee before anyone comes out. They also told them to ask whether it is credited toward the work.
10% of the answers (577 of 5,681) brought this up.
Ask for license/insurance confirmation, trip fee, hourly vs flat-rate pricing, and whether they give a written estimate before work starts.
Who pulls the City of Clearwater or county permit?
For panels, water heaters, system replacements and roofs, answers told customers to ask who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection. Some said the permit goes through the City of Clearwater or Pinellas County, depending on the address.
8% of the answers (442 of 5,681) brought this up.
Ask if they'll handle the permit and inspection as part of the job — reputable local electricians do this routinely.
Is the contractor registered to work in Pinellas County?
Some answers pointed customers to Pinellas County’s contractor search, in addition to the state lookup. They told customers to ask whether the contractor is eligible to work in the county.
1% of the answers (72 of 5,681) brought this up.
Ask whether the contractor is eligible to work in Pinellas County and whether their insurance certificate is current.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 796 of the 5,681 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 750 of its 1,946, ChatGPT in 39 of its 2,364 and Google AI Mode in 7 of its 1,371. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 462 answers
- Reviews it could check: 172 answers
- When the company could do the work: 129 answers
- A license or insurance it could check: 114 answers
- A price or how the job is priced: 86 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 73 answers
- A warranty: 7 answers
Compared with the larger towns: Claude said it couldn’t confirm something in 750 of its 1,946 answers about Clearwater (39%), and couldn’t confirm that any company served Clearwater in 73 (4%). In the eight largest towns we studied, those figures were 40% and 4%.
In Clearwater, assistants most often could not find a phone number, and next could not verify reviews or say who could come soon. That order is close to what the other large towns showed. Each trade’s Clearwater page can answer them with a working number, links to recent reviews and how soon a crew can come.
I can't check real-time booking calendars, so call directly to confirm they can fit you in.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 4,310 ChatGPT and Claude answers about home services in Clearwater, FL, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 97% (4,177 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 54% (2,314 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 9% (378 answers)
- An official license lookup: 8% (355 answers)
- A Google search or Maps page: 4% (162 answers)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 73% of its 1,371 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings
For an urgent job, “open now” doesn’t answer the customer’s real question: can the right technician get to this address within the next few hours?
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
What should a contractor’s Clearwater page say?
Answers about Clearwater looked for where the company is, its Florida license, current insurance, the first-visit fee and who pulls the permit. A Clearwater page should state each one, list the Clearwater ZIP codes you serve, and give a working number that matches your Google listing.
Should my Clearwater page mention Pinellas County registration?
It can help. Some answers sent Clearwater customers to Pinellas County’s contractor search as well as the state lookup, and told them to ask whether the contractor can work in the county. Saying you are registered, with a link, answers that.
Does a Clearwater page need to mention City of Clearwater permits?
For permitted work, it is worth a sentence per job. Answers about panels, system replacements, roofs and plumbing told customers to confirm who pulls the permit. Some named the City of Clearwater or the county. Note which of your jobs are permitted and that your company files for them.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between September 2 and October 14, 2026, they answered 5,681 questions about home services in Clearwater, FL: ChatGPT 2,364, Claude 1,946, Google AI Mode 1,371.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 5,681 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between September 2 and October 14, 2026. Every question named Clearwater or one of its ZIP codes. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
